I watched this video yesterday, and it blew my mind.

I always keep in mind conspiranoia theories and never dismiss them as irrelevant, but damn I didn't see this one coming. I never use my Facebook and I don't have a smartphone but still.

I highly recommend visiting the video's page and checking the links.

First off... Secret Service does not equal NSA. Secret Service is an organization whose purpose is the mortal protection of the American President and other US officials. They really don't care what most people do unless someone else (such as the NSA, who is the American Government's domestic and global digital watchdog and snooper who you were probably thinking of) brings it to their attention first because it signifies a threat to one of the officials under their direct protection.

    ... just sayin'...

Anyhow I haven't used facebook in... hmm... three years? I was considering starting back up but this is exactly the thing that was making me hesitate. I've been weighing the benefits and drawbacks, and this guy has a lot of valid points (although he is overstating and exaggerating some points to convey the message). It's exactly this audio-listening and automatic location-tagging that got me to leave in the first place. I wish he would calm down some, because he makes his own valid points sound like fear-mongering.

I'll be checking out some of those alternatives in the mean time. There's also one called Tsu (ツ in Japanese, since it looks like a smiley) that I was looking into before that wasn't mentioned up there.

Edit on alternatives: Checked out MeWe, their pre-login page has a thing called the "MeWe Challenge" that measures tracking cookies placed in your browser by other services. Apparently I have the same number of trackers from every service (including ones I don't use) on my desktop, on a totally separate browser on my laptop, and on a brand new browser I just installed and only ever visited that exact page on. Go ahead, tell it you use every service and tell me if you also have 126 trackers following you, 35 of which are Facebook. They're lying to me about other sites' cookies, I wonder what else they're lying to me about.

I don't use FB that much anymore, but honestly I couldn't care less if FB records me watching porn or girly anime or whatever. I mean, nobody cares at all, let's be real. Imagine some guy on the other side of the world watching you doing something and going "Oh my goodness, this person just looked up THAT on their phone??? They sent a picture of THAT?? They're saying WHAT now to this person online??" and then writing some kind of report about it. It's ridiculous, who's gonna get paid to sit around and read text messages from random people? Probably some guy with easiest job in the entire world. Or wait, maybe no one actually wastes time on that?
As far as ads go, I use Adblock so I don't even see anything and Gmail conveniently filters out spam e-mails from my inbox. Also, I'm not a citizen of the US of A, so I have no idea if these right even apply to me at all. Privacy is probably an illusion nowadays anyway. It's just that people haven't found out about all the spying that's most likely been going since the internet became popular. So yeah, I hope FB has fun with my personal info that no one even gives a damn about. But sure, do whatever makes you happy. Actually, it's pretty understandable people want privacy and all, but I just don't care about it anymore.
This has become kind of an angry post, but I've been marathonning AVGN episodes these last few days, so sorry about that >_>
