At first I couldn't understand when people would need the television on to fall asleep. People that I knew when I was younger, would leave a movie on for hours before they went to bed. And since most DVD's had a function that made them go back to the main menu after the movie was finished, I would have to suffer through the main menu music, or animations, or annoying lines for hours. "Play da movie. Ja, play!" "Oh pick me! Pick me! Pick me! Pick meeeee!" More recently, I listen to podcasts [Critical Role, Achievement Hunter, Ben Shapiro] or rain drops until I feel tired enough to sleep. I can usually turn off the video before I fall asleep, as I don't want the sound to interfere with my dreams. And sometimes I forget that Auto-play is on. So I end up missing the shorter podcasts and then when I wake up I don't remember which video I started on.
I don’t deliberately listen to music when I’m trying to go to sleep. If I do, it’s because I fell asleep and just so happened to be listening to music, which I think has only happened once or twice. Idk, I guess I sleep better in silence?
Dead silence gives me paranoia, so I use my phone to find 'calming/relaxing video game songs' on youtube.
Personally, I prefer silence as that gives me space to think/review what has happened during the day, but I know of a few friends who do that, so it's not too uncommon.
