What's your favorite fantasy book series?

When I was younger (like middle school through high school), I really enjoyed the Redwall books by Brian Jacques.

Now, however, I think my favorite is A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin (aka the books upon which HBO's A Game of Thrones is based).

The First Law trilogy and the books that came after it but in the same world, by Joe Abercrombie. They are absolutely amazing. It's a very well built world, but it avoids a lot of the typical fantasy cliches. The character developing is simply astounding. It's at times funny, dark, tragic, violent, and at all times very engaging. There's no elves and dwarves and magic forests and dragons, but I highly recommend it to anybody who likes their fantasy to involve gritty battles and their magic a sense of realism. You should read the first law trilogy books first, then Best Served Cold, The Heroes, and Red Country, for they follow an order there. I still have yet to read Red Country, the newest one, but I really want to. I haven't enjoyed books so much in a long time.

My favorite is a tie between The Iron Fey and The Seven Realms, mostly because they are so different its hard to compare them. Iron Fey combines modern and old themed Feary, many of the characters are from Shakespear's a Midsummer Night's Dream, it combines several genres together (comedy, action, romance, adventure, little bit of mystery). The first series has a jaw dropping ending, and the second series has just begun. Trust me, I don't do it justice with this explanation.
The Seven Realms is a recently completed 4 book saga that has less mystic to it. Magic is the only thing that keeps it in the fantasy genre if you ask me. The story follows the live's of Princess Riasa and peasant Han "Cuffs" Alister. If I try to explain the book you will just get confused so I'm not going to. The books involve a lot of battles, war, love, and some politics. Its easier to understand the books when you read them.

Ahhhh its hard to pick a favorite out of all the ones that I've read but I really like the Eragon series, along with Dragons of Deltora, and The Rangers Apprentice.
But Pathfinder is another good one I've picked up on recently, though sadly I can never find the second book. 8I

    Highly frustrating mind you.

I absolutely adore books with dragons in it. For some reason they just make stories so much cooler. Probably because they are these high and mighty beasts that can wreck havoc when angered. Though, I do wish to find more books to where dragons are not ALL evil. Or a knight of some sort has to go out and slay them. I know there's Eragon but for some reason it doesn't impress me. Not really sure why, But putting opinions to the side...

I do love the "Dragon Pit" series by Jane Yolen. It has an interesting view of dragons. Even though I am not one for pit fighting, it's part of the plot. They get into some pretty bad situations where they are forced to fight to get free. The main character not only grows as a person but his dragon and friend do as well. His dragon is also rather amusing too as how she reacts towards certain things can be comical. There's a couple funny parts here and there too, as well as adorable moments and really sad moments. It's one of the few books that I am actually re-reading again.

I started reading Deltora quest too but it came second with the purchase through scholastic ( messed up really) and my mom stopped paying for it by the time I got the second book for it so I never finished it. 8I Thats kinda why I say I like Dragons of Deltora instead of Deltora Quest.

/curse my luck with book series.

Someone else will probably come with this same series eventually, but I'm going to have to go with Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I was interested in mythology before I even picked up that first book, and despite the fact that some things were changed from actual Greek mythology in the book it didn't take away from the story. They were good, entertaining, had a great continuous plot, and there were some hilarious moments to top it all off.

I saw Redwall mentioned here. This thread is automatically good.

Enjoy LOTR, Harry Potter, and The Prydain Chronicles...but overall I think I still enjoy the Redwall series the most :)

LOTR is a given for me. It's basically the model for fantasy. I'm a fan of all of Tolkien's works really, especially the Silmarillion. Some people find it boring and daunting but I love the truly epic scale of what is included and the way it's written as a mythical account, a collection of mythical tales. It has gods, demons, dragons, wars, magical jewels, incest, cripples, what more could you want?

I still have my Redwall books :3 I also enjoy LotR, Inheritance Cycle (Eragon), and Harry Potter. I've read one or two Dragons of Deltora and Deltora Quest books. I actually just donated the ones I have to the library...

I've thoroughly enjoyed T.A. Barron's Merlin series, John Flanagan's The Ranger's Apprentice, and Jim Butcher's Codex Alera and his other series The Dresden Files.

Honorary mention for Stuart Hill's The Icemark Chronicles. Not a favorite anymore since I read the ending. I always hate it when one of my favorite characters dies.

My favourites would be Percy Jackson, Keys to the Kingdom, and Artemis Fowl. The are all interesting series, even if the second indirectly translates to some Christian beliefs, like Narnia does.

Wow, you must have been pretty confused, seeing as thats the last series of Deltora, that series got me into reading so its pretty nostalgic for me. Oh and since you mentioned Ranger's Apprentice, there is one last book coming soon "The Royal Ranger" just in case you didn't know already

I forgot to add: the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik and Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series.

I'm not looking forward to the Royal Ranger seeing as according to the description and the first chapter that was released, either Alyss or Will and Alyss's child dies. It could be a third person but most people think it's Alyss, which is really depressing.

I enjoyed reading the Inheritance Cycle (a bit disappointed in how they ended it.) I also like the Warriors series by Erin Hunter and The Last Apprentice series by Joseph Delaney.

I enjoy reading the LOTR and Eragon series' of books. I don't read much fantasy but those are my standouts from the rest. J.R.R Tolkien and Christopher Paolini put much detail into their books and that's what I enjoy the most.

I'd have to say Warriors, Seekers, Percy Jackson, and some stuff by L.J. Smith.

I'm kinda happy they've all already been mentioned, but my three favourite series' are Artemis Fowl, Deltora Quest and the Inheritance Cycle.
Another series that I like (that I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned) is His Dark Materials; it spawned the film Northern Lights which covers the first book.

I'm currently in the middle of reading through A Song of Ice and Fire, as well as keeping up with the TV show. I'm impressed by both so far!

While I did enjoy His Dark Materials, the ending left a bad taste.
They're only like 12, but they're like so in love, guys.

How far are you into A Song of Ice and Fire?
