Pretty self-explanatory. I think it's safe to say that for the majority of anime fans, Ghibli is often the main source for our favorite anime films, but there are other studios out there that produce high quality works as well. What are some of your favorites? (And try to avoid including series-based films. I don't know why, but I feel like that would be cheating) A few of mine include The Boy and the Beast, Wolf Children, Summer Wars, A Letter to Momo and, of course, Your Name.
My Name is great. Best non-Ghibli anime movie I've seen in a while. The Girl Who Lept Through Time is great, too! If you like Psychedelic/mind-f movies, Paprika will be right up your alley. Tekkonkinkreet is also a trip but more of an emotional roller coaster than Paprika IMO. Akira is an oldie but goodie, too. I want to see Wolf Children, but other than Your Name, I haven't heard of the others! Mind telling us a little about those? (no spoilers if possible!)
I don't think I've seen any movie-only anime that wasn't Ghibli. For movie-sequels to anime shows, though, my all-time favorite is Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz.
Your Name of course; Wolf Children is great too; I liked The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and The Case of Hana & Alice but it’s been a while since I saw those two. And I can’t really remember other non-Ghibli anime movies I could’ve seen. The Boy and The Beast seems great, I’ll watch it one day.
I like how the two I've seen that weren't based on already existing shows were mentioned multiple times, that being Your Name and The girl who leapt through time. Both were good movies for sure, but I'd have to watch a few more to have an actual favorite xD
Summer Wars is better than any Ghibli movie I think, it is easily one of my favourite films. Adolescence of Utena is rather good too. Better than the TV series, in my opinion. A Silent Voice was pretty good, and The Boy and the Beast was fantastic. Also, the second Digimon movie, dubbed. One of the best dub anime films I've ever seen. They really outdid themselves with the dialogue and I think its actually better than the Tri films. Still makes me laugh quite a bit even though I've seen it so many times now. xD
