FireRed (rom) can't continue after E4

So, the basic info about this problem is probably something you've all heard about..
I tried various things to be able to continue after beating the E4, but none worked. I'm still searching for more, but I think it will be helpful to actually ask and say the details of my exact problem.
For one, I tried REALLY hard to get to the point where I am - currently I have all the Pokémon I could get by now without cheating, and they are all level 40+ (the ones for E4 are 50+), which wasn't at all an easy task to do. So I really want to keep this one..

So, after I beat the E4 and after the credits, the game pretends as if I never started my game to begin with and Prof. Oak begins explaining what Pokémon are.
However; when I tried to save in-game after that (to check if I can), it says there is another save file already (so then in the end I decided not to save). But when I started the game, I wasn't given the menu it usually shows at the start of the games; you know. the one that says "continue", "new game" and "option". None of these showed up at all.

So I'm starting to think that the problem is not in being unable to save, but rather in this menu not appearing. Do you have any idea how to fix it? Would it work if I downloaded another, good FireRed ROM, and used it to open my current save file in it? And if it would, can someone give me the link to download a FR rom that works fine?
Also I'm pretty sure the emulator is completely okay despite I downloaded it several years ago; I play Emerald and Red Rescue Team on the same emulator and they work fine; I mean, in Red Rescue team it only works after beating the game but since that's the only time i actually need the in-game save, it's okay. But in Emerald both in-game save and the save states work fine, always. (I mean there was a problem but I figured this is only because I have more Emerald roms downloaded and sometimes open the wrong one, so I just memorized which one I need to open)
