This genre of videogames seems like it's either a hit or miss for most people. The pun was intended. Personally, I love first person games, and not just shooters. I'm a big fan of the Borderlands series and recently I've started pouring some time into L4D2, as well. I also have a motherload of other FPS games on my Steam account, but my computer isn't powerful enough to run them ;; Mirror's Edge and Portal 2 are excellent first person games that don't really involve firing guns so much. Online FPS games don't appeal to me as much. Maybe because I'm godawful at them...
Do you hate or love the FPS genre? What are your favorite games?

FPS games are really fun to me, especially when playing online with friends.
One of the most common FPS games out there is Call of Duty, and to be honest, I enjoy it. Most people don't or say they don't but have barely ever played it, but I've been a fan of the game ever since Modern Warfare 2 came out in 2009 I believe it was. Despite it being completely broken, MW2 was one of the funnest CoD games imo, and I'll always love it. I was playing Advanced Warfare just a few hours ago, kicking ass as usual. B)
I'm not a fan of every CoD game, but most of the ones I've owned, I've enjoyed.

Battlefield is also a pretty fun FPS game that I used to enjoy a lot back in the BF3 days. Haven't played any BF games since then, but I remember being pretty good at BF3.
I can't remember the names of too many other FPS games, but I know I've played more than just those 2 franchises.

Portal and Portal 2 are some of my favorite games ever, they're so much fun and the stories to each of them are simply amazing. Can't get enough of them whatsoever. I'm hoping that in the future we'll see a Portal 3 come out, but Valve can't count to 3, so it might be a while if it ever happens...
Still, a boy can dream, can't he?

Yeah, I would say I'm most familiar with Call of Duty in the FPS genre. I too started in MW2 and found it incredibly fun, until I started playing zombies. Ever since I have barely touched any multiplayer on those games, just because I find it less fun. I like the more arcadey feel to zombies, being a fairly easy game once you have a few games under your belt allowing you to challenge yourself in different ways, using guns which are basically universally considered crap and seeing how well you can do with them, or just seeing how many round you can survive. Because of that after black ops 2 I took a break from CoD until Black Ops 3, which I've been kind of underwhelmed with due to all of the bugs and server issues making playing zombies infuriating (which is sad because I think gameplay wise it's by far the best).

As for other first person games, if Minecraft counts as one then yeah I have a lot of fun playing that with friends. I love Portal (again with friends). I would like L4D if I didn't feel like my fate was so heavily based on the competence of my teammates whenever a special zombie attacks me. I was seriously in to Payday 2 for a bit, until it started to get stale (doing the same heists over and over again you would expect that to happen eventually) and becoming more and more pay to win (or at least pay to have an advantage, which with the amount of DLC just tipped me over the edge and put me off the game as a whole). I love the Bioshock series and am sad that they won't be making any more.

But yeah, I like the genre and it's cool to see how far it's come from it was like in 2007 in terms of concepts and gameplay. Then again for some of these games I think they are adding somewhat pointless features which don't really add anything to the game, like the wall running ability in Black Ops 3 (though that's coming from someone only with zombies experience, it might be completely different on some multiplayer maps).

I had fun playing call of duty for sure, just i wasn't very good and it was only fun if you weren't very serious. Try, sure, but goofing off in some respects is what made it enjoyable. As far as my competitive spirit lies, I invest it in something like Pokémon that's turn based and not reaction. That, or smash bros even if I'm not that good. I just have so many hours under my belt, not so much reaction time.

I'd mention splatoon but 3rd person... oh well. Its fun anyways

I'm not that good at video games(or maybe don't spend enough time), and mainly don't play a lot of FPS's... though...

    Verdun.

It is a WWI Trench Warfare FPS Simulator that looks amazing. I am considering getting this at the time, since the only gaming software I have is a bad PC laptop. I really want to, and now that I have some steam funds I think I might see if we get any good holiday sales, and maybe buy Verdun
I play isometric and top-down shooters too, just don't have much experience playing FPS's.

FPS games are very hit or miss for me. I've enjoyed games like Crysis and other great FPS games very much but most of them seem like clones of each other. Predictable storylines, absolutely bland characters and over-the-top violence that tries to make up for all that's missing.

If anyone's looking to play one though, I recommend the Crysis series. Now there's a good set of FPS games. It's up to opinion but I think Crysis 2 was better than Crysis.

I don't really like FP games. The controls are too confusing (seriously, I tried my brother's Call of Duty game and I kept running into walls) and not being able to see what's coming at me from all angles kinda scares me. Depending on the genre, I could like them, but the majority of first person-games are a no-go with me.

... No mention of 007 Goldeneye or Perfect Dark yet. Whaaat?

Excuse me, I need to go fire up that time machine again. See you all in the year 2001. I'll be playing my Perfect Dark, Mario Kart 64, and Pokémon Gold/Silver. Peace out.

Okay, leaving out some super old games like Doom, 007 Goldeneye pretty much invented/perfected the FPS genre. In fact, it may have actually invented the FPS multiplayer genre. The game is a legend, and deserving of every ounce of praise heaped upon it. Seriously, go buy a N64 and Goldeneye, get some Surge soda, bring a Backstreet Boys casette and we'll have a party like it's 1999 plus two years.

Perfect Dark, on the other hand... is equal to or better than 007 Goldeneye in every way, period. FPS multiplayer with optional AI players, alternate weapon modes, post-match awards and ranking, statistic record-keeping; most of these features were born with or at least made mainstream by Perfect Dark. You know, I'm a little bit glad nobody's harping over Perfect Dark, in a weird way. It just means that maybe I am correct in saying I am the best Perfect Dark player in the entire world right now. Everyone else has moved on to call of battle duty field eight skeleton zombie-ghosts black edition, and I've stuck with the classics.

As for non-shooters, I prefer first person to third. Even games where it's optional, like Fallout and the Elder Scrolls, I tend to stick first person. I'd rather feel like I'm doing the thing than telling someone else to do the thing.

I've always been funny about first person shooters. But now it seems I'm being converted. I've...even started playing Black Ops II, and god help me I kinda like the cutscenes, cheesy though they may be. The multiplayer is hella fun to play in local co-op mode, too.

I'd love to be that snob that says, "I'm too good for FPS, they suck!" but I actually like FPS games... once in a while. I'll definitely agree that FPS games have their value, although sometimes it is hard to find it. Playing them with friends while listening to classical music and jazz certainly is a lot of fun, don't get me wrong. You will NEVER find me playing a FPS on my own during my freetime. It's just not in my top interests in video games.
