What narrative mode do you prefer to use when writing a story: first, second, or third person?

Usually I go by third person. Every once and a while I may do some first person, but I couldn't write a whole story /RP in it.

I prefer third person when writing, though I sometimes use first person.

To give a complete non-answer, it depends.

I tend to favor third person for shorter or simpler narratives. But, because I've not quite figured out how to work thoughts into my writing smoothly, I've found first person just works better for my main story.

Most times I prefer 3rd person but sometimes I think 1st person will suit the story better. I feel 3rd person gives less of a person's thoughts than 1st person does. (Except for Rick Riordan's books. He makes 3rd person amazing!)

I agree with the "it depends".

I do normally write in third person though.

Third person is what I like to use. I feel like writing in first person or second person is really hard as you have to add a lot of detail using the 5 senses.

I prefer to write in a third person omniscient view where I can get in-depth thoughts from all the characters.

It really does depend. If the story has more internal conflicts than external, I prefer 1st person. For example, Life of Pi. If the story has a lot of things going on at once (I guess you could say "action-packed"), like Harry Potter, then it's better in third.

Are there even second person books? o.o

Yes, Absol. It's where the narration refers the character as "you."

Can you give me an example of a second person book?

I thought second person was only used for parts of speech/grammar.

It's much more common in things like manuals, gamebooks, the interactive fiction stuff where you choose the things to do and something particular happens because of that action, etc. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second-person_narrative

As for an actual book, A Man Asleep by Georges Perec is an example I found off that same source.

I prefer to use third person povs. It's easier, flexible and I can express all characters opinions and actions.
But there are times when I use the 1st-person one. It helps a lot when I need to do in-depth thoughts and perspectives.

2nd-person, is more of an interactive storyline. You might not find it in fanfiction because it's banned, I think.

*shudders* Second person... I've reviewed too many terrible second person fics to even think about trying to pick it up. It's just so dang hard to do anywhere close to right.

I write in mostly third person omniscient, with chapters and segments moving between character perspectives. I've also written in first person before, but not as much. I tend to write a good amount of characters, so first person doesn't work as well for that.

As for good second person books, @[member="TehAbsol"], I've heard that Bright Lights, Big City is the best in terms of second person novels. I've not actually read it though, so tell me how it is if you do! :)

I tend to stick to third person narratives. One of the main reasons is the flexibility I have to shift perspectives and have detailed thoughts on each of my characters. Plus writing in first can be really awkward, if not done correctly

I'm a third-person type of writer. I would only write second person if there was a self insert (which I would never do), and writing in first person feels weird to me unless I was doing an autobiography.

Third-person would be my preference, aye. Certainly, as I grew more confident with my writing I moved towards this perspective. Although, if I had to compose a creative writing essay for whatever reason, then and only then would I gravitate towards first person and monologue-monologue-monologue. I don't like writing in third person if there's a word limit involved; rather embarrassingly, the pressure gets to me.
