Digital First time making a custom 3DS theme

I've been excited to make custom 3DS themes since last year when I found out it was something you could do, but my old laptop was so outdated that I couldn't download any of the programs used to create them. Now that I have a new laptop, I finally decided to try my hand at it.

My idea since the get-go was basing it on a mobile game I play called Twisted Wonderland. There was one event in particular that stuck out to me, so I based it on that. I used art and sound effects directly from the game. The BG music is the special song for the event (that I love dearly). Sadly I did have to cut it short. The song is nearly 3 minutes long, and in order to fit it within the 3.3 MB file size limit, I had to compress the hell out of it (16000 hz instead of 44000 hz) and it sounded so terrible. I reeeeeeeeally wanted to include the full song, but I had to cut my losses and stop it after the end of the first chorus. (I faded it out so it would loop better)


I cut it off at around 1:14.

It was a bit of trial and error trying to figure out the quirks of the editing software, especially with the audio. For some reason, it wouldn't let me preview the audio at all or change the audio files, even though the formatting was correct. I tried looking for Reddit threads and stuff to try to find any solution, but no dice. Eventually I had to download an older version of the program and I could finally preview the audio.

Anyway, here is the completed theme!



Not bad for my first time doing this, if I do say so myself. I downloaded it onto my 2DS and the green is a bit lighter on the screen as it is in the preview, but maybe it's just a matter of different screen resolutions or something? Idk. Not a dealbreaker though. I don't think anyone else aside from me would notice it anyway.

I submitted it to the Theme Plaza website so other people could download it if they wanted to. I'm still waiting for it to get approved, but I'll share the download link here once it gets approved. EDIT: the theme just got approved today! You can download it here!

This was a lot of fun to make. Now that I have a better understanding of how to make these, I want to try making some other themes. I already have another idea in mind, of course for none other than a certain Dark type gym leader ; )

 

I... honestly don't know. Maybe there's a midi version that exists somewhere?
