There are tons of games that explode with popularity. EVERYONE seems to be playing them, and everyone is recommending them to you! But, for one reason you never actually get around to picking them up! What are some games that are on the hype train that you've never touched yourself?

For me, while I love the character designs, I think the soundtrack is gorgeous, and I think the story is great, I have never actually picked up a Legend of Zelda game and personally played it. I've watched gameplay walkthroughs, and I listen to a good deal of themes in my VG playlist, but I have never played them myself. The same goes for Xenoblade.

People always expect me to have played Grand Theft Auto, I know next to nothing about the game in reality XD My mom didn't allow us to own violent games. Most violent one we own, Persona 3 (which I cant play since my mom broke the cord to my PS2), or Super Smash Bros. Sooooo...

Oh yeah, I never got into GTA myself either. The idea of stealing stuff and beating people up never appealed to me >_>

Hooray for Smash Bros! It's one of those games that anyone can pick up and invite friends over for a fun time! ^^

If it's on the hype train, I most likely want nothing to do with it. My philosophy on matters like those tends to be that if people are raving about a game (or whatever) so much and so loudly, then they are blind to its flaws or trying to cover up whatever flaws it might have. That, and I wouldn't want to be associated with people who shout so much anyway - it's bad for my ears.

Thankfully, most wildly popular games are on systems I don't own, and the only systems I do own are Nintendo handhelds. Thus, I already have a well-founded excuse to avoid those kinds of people.

If I become interested in it on my own, that is a wholly different matter, but that will not have anything to do with any sort of hype train.

The Splatoon games. Their fanbase looks awesome, but I haven't played any of the games to be a part of it. :(

Any popular game with an M rating. My parents where very strict with this sort of thing when I was growing up and I wasn't even allowed to play rated T games until I was actually in my teens (and even then it was only on a case-by-case basis until I reached 18) and M ratings where just out of the picture altogether. My parents have now decided that now that I am an adult I am allowed to play or watch anything I choose, but I still choose not to play anything with an M rating. (Although I do own a few on Steam that I got from the mystery bundle offers that Sqaure Enix offers about twice a year. I still refuse to play any of them.)

Among others (most of the games I've played were primarily arcade/C64) include most sports games, most games on the XBox (yes, redundant, I know... :P), all of the MegaTen/SMT/P games up to Persona 3 (I played a bit of it but was so turned off by it that I almost completely ignored P4, and knowing what I know about SMT I have no trouble ignoring it), most of the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games, most fighting games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter, the Fire Emblem games before Blazing Blade (and from what I've seen of their nonsense, especially Genealogy of the Holy War, I am happy to completely ignore them), most M-rated games (only exceptions being P4 and the Mass Effect games), Undertale (honestly, I've no interest in it whatsoever - partly because of how overhyped it was when it came out), and some others that I can't think of.

Being primarily a PC/Nintendo system player I missed a few important titles in the past years.
If I think on the games I could have played (and given my tastes I could have enjoyed) the first game that comes to mind is Undertale. Yup, I am a fan of indie games and I always do my best to support them.. But the fanbase and hype simply killed it for me. Then watching gameplays made me throw away completely any chance of ever picking it up.

Aaaand FNAF.. Oh dear this game. That kind of "horror" that became so popular. I really miss old school horror games. <\3

I never got into those games either. >_> I will say some of the songs on Undertale are catchy, but with both of them, the fan bases can be kind of a turnoff unfortunately...

Yeah, Undertale was hyped up far more, IMO, than a lot of AAA games like Destiny, For Honor, and the like. Maybe it's just because I never grew up with Earthbound (I had not even known it existed until I unlocked Ness in SSB64).

I dunno, FNaF is pretty terrifying - at least at first - and given its lore I would play it before I played anything in "classic horror" (like Silent Hill and ResE), but I'm curious as to why you wouldn't consider it horror.

How I see it most of that kind of games mostly rely on the fact your biggest fear is the jumpscare (aka ugly image and horrible screech), not only FNAF but most of the horror genre games -mostly indie- you see lately. Anyone will get shocked at that and at risk of being flamed for it I think it's kind of a cheap resource to base your game on it.

Games like Silent Hill or Penumbra -while it might have a couple jumpscares- rely and work on the ambience, sound effects, your surroundings, the feelings that the place itself create in you, in a few words it's more
psychological. I don't forget the feeling of running in the foggy town looking for something, anything.
For the record I never checked FNAF's lore so I won't comment on that aspect.

Maybe I am being too old school or 2000 horror doesn't cause the same effect on new kids these days xD but it's my opinion.

Undertale. Back when this game first released I couldn't go a single day without hearing the name (I'm not kidding. I even kept a counter to see how many days I would have without hearing that name). I've seen one playthrough of this game before and I get an Earthbound vibe when I looked at it. Since I played Earthbound before UT I didn't think it was needed for me to buy UT to get to experience the gameplay/dialogue.

No flames here; I do understand what you're saying, to be sure. As an old-school gamer myself (I grew up on arcade, Commodore 64, and NES games) I can definitely understand your perspective. I've never played the FNaF games myself - and likely never will - but what made me appreciate it is MatPat's Game Theories about the game, as well as Gaijin Goombah's exploration of the cultural origins behind the game's premise. I highly recommend them if you're curious.

Yes, for as much as I dislike horror in general I will say that Silent Hill had excellent atmosphere. I typically try to stay away from occult because that stuff can really affect a person negatively, though, so I don't really have any attachment to those classic styles, y'know?

I would mention all these games I want to try for consoles I don't own, but that would be cheating. I think I'm gonna go with the Pikmin franchise. I owned a Gamecube but never played a single one of these games.

Its going to be a long list for me. I never played any Modern Warfare, COD, Battlefield, GTA, Fire emblem, FNAF, Undertale, Legend of Zelda (excluding BotW)...it honestly would be quicker just to say the games I have played.
