I'm sure we've all heard this phrase somewhere, especially in commercials targeting children. "Get your parents' permission before going online!"

For the older folks, did you have to ask your parents to get on the internet when you were younger? Or were you a rebel and didn't need permission to do so? Do you still need permission nowadays?

For the younger folks, do you ask permission to use the internet at your home? Are your parents a bit strict as to how you use the internet?

I was under the impression that said phrase is inserted in commercials because of legal reasons. It does not seem to be present in any products targeted towards teenagers or adults.

Now, to return to the matter at hand.

I don't think this restriction ever applied to me at any point, because when I began to start making forays into the world of the Internet at large, I was already an adult - before then I was predominantly concerned with video games for my entertainment. I still do play video games, true, but I did so more prevalently when younger. Thus, when it ever actually mattered, I never needed permission, as I was long since old enough by then.

Never once asked parents for permission. I knew that if I needed parents permission, there was fun stuff just minutes away. I guess that's why I was desensitized when I was a child.

I always used to ask for my parents permission until I was 13, and then I started making accounts all over the place, because I pretty much knew what was pricing and what was not. I don't ask for their permission unless it's something huge, I guess like a Twitter account or something.

I have only asked permission for two accounts, my DA and my FB (which I got a year before we were allowed at 18, because of a friend going to college) everything else... well, it was very much a "don't ask, don't tell" and "ask me no questions and I'll tell you no lies" situation.

When I actually started roaming the internet, rather than just playing some Lego pc game, I did ask my parents (mainly my dad) permission to make accounts on sites like Neopets and DeviantArt, since I was rather new to the whole thing.

My dad is a bit sceptical about most sites, so I guess because he always pays attention to those guidelines, I became more alert as well. I think he now trusts me more than enough. He sometimes jokingly asks "have you fed your Neopets today?"

lol permission, cool kids don't need permission for anything

Never once asked permission for anything I've done on the internet. Even when I was about 9 years old, I just hopped on the computer and started browsing. Even made my very own AOL account on my own too. B)
My mom sometimes seemed concerned because I always talked to online people (most the time I'd tell her they were friends from school or they lived near by to get her off my back), but it's only fair to care about that kind of stuff when your child is at a very young age.

While there were some house rules (i.e. don't give out your personal info, don't make a screenname that gives away your gender, etc) I had reasonable free reign around the Web that increased as I got older (but I tended to stick to a small core of sites at first

When I was younger I always had to ask for permission to use the internet, primarily because they worried I would accidentally see something that I wasn't supposed to or break the home computer. By the time I was 15 years old I got my very own laptop and the freedom to use it whenever I pleased until I had to charge it. By then my parents trusted me to be responsible enough to use the internet without any guidance or supervision. I remember the first thing I did when I got my own laptop was watch a bunch of my favorite shows on the internet because someone was always using the TV in the living room. The freedom was nice and I'm still enjoying it now. Though I haven't told my parents about LV or any other forums I'm on because I don't think they even know what a forum is! x.x

Nope I never asked and I never had to, I guess my parents thought I were capable enough to take care of myself on the net.

As long as I didn't do anything stupid my parents allow me to surf the net. I've never had any records of going to malicious sites anyways.

I only asked my grandma to make a Lego account back when I was 7 (well, technically, I asked for her EMail to make said account, she said no, but I checked her Windows Live Messenger and found it, yes, that was a thing back then :P). That's the only time I've ever asked. I got big into the internet and stuff when I was like 10 or 11 and I never asked other than that. I did have a tracker on my laptop for a while, but I waited for my mom to forget about checking it, then got rid of it XD

When I was a teenier Kitty-Fox, I did ask permission to get online because I shared the computer with Dad. Now, I pretty much LIVE on the internet and dad doesn't care because he knows I won't like, fill our network with viruses or anything. I DO ask permission to buy stuff though because I use his card for that.

We only had one desktop back when I was a little kid, so my brother and I always had to ask/wait until our mom would let us on the computer for a few hours. When I signed up with games like Neopets and Club Penguin, I had to ask to use her email address, too, since I didn't have my own until a few years later. Ever since I got my first laptop when I was 10 or 11, though, I can pretty much get on the internet as often and long as I want to; I don't have to ask since my laptop is my personal belonging, and I don't have a real time limit or curfew, either.

When I was a kid, I used to ask my parents when I'm about to go online by going to cyber cafe because I have to watch my internet quota (that was when I was having no internet in my home). This continues when I got my first internet connection in my laptop, especially if it comes to activating time-limited packet or topping up my modem. However, once I started to get internet access which doesn't have the quota limit, my parents don't mind of me surfing that I don't have to ask for permissions anymore.

If I may ask: Was this quota self-imposed by your parents, or was it an inherent property of the ISP your household was using at the time? (I ask this mostly for the sake of curiosity, as I know that both of those kinds of quotas exist.)

When I was at the cyber cafe, the quota was self-imposed by my parents (so I can visit for an hour or so), but when I got my first and second internet connection, it's the ISP who set the quota for me (timed one on the first, and the data usage on the second), so I still need permission from my parents to add more quota.

When I was little, yes all the time. Well more like my parents OWNED the computers so I pretty much had to ask permission. I believe I then stopped a few moments later and just went on the computer on my own when my sister and I got our own computer, though I still asked my parents permission to join a website, or play a new game (Ex. animal jam). But now days my parents don't really care what I do as long as it fallows the rules...

No, mostly because when I was at the age I'd have to, the net didn't have too much on it and not many used it, I just went on Neopets.
Did I have restricted computer time? Yes.
