I just kind of had a mini discussion about this at the Lunch Table, so I thought I would share my thoughts and ask for yours here in this thread.

There are times that I can't wait to move out of my house and grow up and become an adult and go to college and get a job and get married... and... run on sentence.

But mostly, I just want to remain a teenager forever. Being young and having very few real worries is great. You don't have to pay rent, you don't have to pay for food. Heck, the only things that I do buy are 3ds games, fast food, and my donation to Lake Valor recently.

I would like to hear you opinions on growing up. Are you looking forward to become an adult, or if you are an adult, do you still wish that you were a teenager?

I am not looking forward to becoming an adult. Sure you have more freedom, but there are so many responsibilities. As a teenager, I have so much free time, which is the complete opposite of my parents who have so much stress from over-working. Paying bills, and managing their lives along with mine is rough, so becoming an adult is absolutely terrifying to me. That's why I appreciate most adults, they do so much compared to me, who does nothing but stay on the internet.

    Adult-ish here. (24, full-time job, married)

Yeah, there are times when I think it would be awesome to go back to being a teenager. I definitely look back on it fondly. My long weekends pulling all-nighters, hanging out with my friends and goofing off on forums without a care in the world were some of my favorite memories. Also being able to use my full paychecks on manga and pocky was pretty awesome.

But being an adult has a lot of perks, too. When I was a teenager, still supported by my parents, I never felt the sense of accomplishment that I do now that I completely support myself. Plus, I can still do those other things I did as a teenager, too, just not on a weekly basis. xD

Literally growing older than 5 was a huge mistake.

There's not much I'm looking forward to when I become an adult. Get a job, get my own place, maybe travel a bit. When it comes to my future I'm fairly pessimistic actually. I'd rather just stay a teenager, because while I do have my worries growing up ain't gonna help lmao.

I'm an "adult" in the sense that I'm now old enough to make plentiful decisions and can even legally drink and gamble in my country now, and I can honestly say I wish I were a teen again. I had fewer responsibilities/things to worry about, and high school work was much easier than college coursework is. Additionally, I haven't fully stepped into the adult world yet (post-college), and I'm quite terrified of getting a place of my own and finding a job that'll help keep a roof under my house, electricity running throughout the entire space, food in the kitchen, etc.

There's also the loss of finding certain occasions "special". When I was much younger, I looked forward to my birthday, Christmas, New Year's, etc. because they were fantastic times. (I mean, staying up until midnight was a dream come true.) Just last year (as in, two weeks ago to last night), I noticed how I didn't feel anything when Christmas or New Year's came--to me, they were just normal days with a few extra additions (gift-giving on Christmas and visiting family, though the latter we do every now and then). I guess it's up to me to make them special, but I'm not certain I can get the same feeling I got when I was younger.

My opinion of growing up has always fluctuated. The pros of finally becoming an adult would include being allowed to get away from my judgemental 'parents' at long last, be allowed to make my own decisions, and generally live a much less dull life than I currently do. I've felt extremely detached from everybody I know in real life, family included, so the idea of parting ways with all of them is very appealing to me. But the downside would be the sheer amount of responsibilities that would come with moving out, including having to buy necessities, work, pay bills/rent, and take care of my own self since I don't want to marry or have children. I'm trying to cherish my teenage years while I'm still living through them, but it's practically been impossible for a lot of reasons; being unable to fully enjoy what I'd been told would be the "best years of my life" is the main reason for longing to grow up in itself. I don't feel ready to grow up just yet, but since it's inevitable I've been trying to prepare myself for it as much as I can.

I'm actually looking forward to becoming an adult quite a bit. I'm pretty much completely done with school at this point, and I'd much rather have a steady, full-time job, where I can do something that actually interests me. Living on my own has been my dream for many years already, and I can't wait till I can actually do it :) Even with all the added responsibilities, becoming an adult would only make me feel more free, and I really wish that could've been done sooner...

"What a strange question... Why would I want to play the same old roles forever? Youth may be beautiful, but it's not all there is to life. Everything changes. I want to live and change like that, too. So I look forward to playing different roles as I get older."

That exactly what i think. Getting older and growing up is a good thing.

I personally am eager to become a fully independent adult. I have always been like that.

I'll try to keep this short... I've been an adult for a few years now, and it's been the most painful thing I've ever gone through. I didn't have any actual responsibilities before becoming an adult, except school, so suddenly having to do everything all on my own was a huge shock and still today, I feel lost and lonely every single day. I have no clue what I'm doing, or what I should be doing, and some days I don't even want to get out of bed.

But, it's just all part of growing up. Becoming an adult means having the freedom to be what you want to be, which means you have to work hard to get what you want. Some don't get so lucky and have to work really hard.

Sure, being a child and depending on others is easier, but in the end, it gets you nothing. Having the freedom to make your own decisions and work toward what you want is completely worth it at the end of the day.

I'm at a rough patch. I can't find a job, so I feel very guilty when I eat food, I don't want to spend anything on warmer clothes, my parents and my boyfriends' parents have been very judgmental of me, the possibility of losing my home looms over me and worries my boyfriend immensely. But ya know what? If I don't give up, I'll one day have a job, perhaps eventually even one I love, and I'll finally be someone I can be proud of. And I'm sure there's no greater reward than that.

The thought of that is what keeps me going... ♥

I'd say I both look forward to it, and dread it. True, you get freedom etc and a job, but that's what scares me. The Adult life looks difficult and rewarding to me, but I'll always remain a kid at heart. No matter what people say.

I do want to grow up, yes. I'd like to be an adult and have my own family. I know it is hard but I think that would complete me.

Being an adult is pretty hard, especially here where you have to do 234545 things for the government each year and all the forms are so hard to decipher and it's just hell.
This country is literally the least organized in terms of this stuff.

I already know that I'm never going to truly grow up. I've made it a personal goal to always carry a bit of the child in me within my thoughts. It keeps me happy even when things are tough and stressful. At the same time, I appreciate the opportunity to carry more responsibility. All my life, I've wanted to prove that I can do things. I want to prove my abilities, and being an adult will make this easier to accomplish. It also doesn't hurt that adulthood means getting a job, and getting a job means money, and money means video games and food and fun 'n stuff. Ah, there's the child in my head again.

As pathetic as this might sound I do wish I was still a teenager. Not that those years were particularly glamorous for me but I think the experience of going through such a formative time in your life among so many different people is very cool in and of itself. Obviously answers to this question will depend a lot on how much one enjoyed their youth, but I personally look back on my teenage years very fondly. Even though only one year was enjoyable to me at the time.

Also less expectations and standards are always nice haha. I still don't feel ready for adulthood and I'm in my early 20's!

I'm still incredibly childish anyway... a couple more years and I'll be a fully-fledged 'adult', with a job (hopefully?)
and all. Pretty much the only new thing I get from being an adult is the freedom to eat so many cupcakes I
get a terrible stomachache, regret for the next week, and repeat.
...jk about the only new thing, but I definitely haven't learnt my lesson about the cupcakes yet.

I know that life is supposed to be easier and stuff for me now, but I really can't wait. There are some cool things, but I think that being an adult would just be a lot better in terms of freedom because I literally get very little freedom.

I'm technically already and adult, and I hate it. I barely got to spend my childhood and teenage years doing actual child/teen things, and now that I'm older, I really regret it. I pretty much let my school and family control my actions, and I wish I could go back and redo my whole life sometimes. Regardless, I'm still trying to move forward, since there's not much I can really do about that now.

Growing up is tough but fun at the same time. Personally I had a good time as a young kid and I'm not too anxious to be an adult, well Growing old is compulsory but growing up isn't especially in my dream job.

Becoming an adult has thrust upon me a rife of responsibilities that I must fulfil and, in truth, I would much rather go without.

However, when I was a teenager, I was an absolute idiot when it came to interacting with people, so the alternative would be far worse.

I would much rather continue as an adult than have to remain a child.
