Gyms have been gone for a few years as the Alola Region replaced the traditional gym system with trials. Did you guys miss gyms, or were you happy to see them gone? Which gyms are you looking forward to in LGPE?
*deep breath* GIVE US BACK OUR GYMS PLEASE! The Z-Crystals were interesting, but at the end of the day were just OP gimmicks. NOW GIVE US BACK GYMS! Sorry, I just really like gyms. The badges were also really neat, and I liked how unique they all looked.
I prefer gyms tbh and I've missed them even if the trials were fun the gyms are just you know a part of pokémon even if USUM had a mock up gym you could do I think it was once a day.
Not really? Let's be honest - Trials WERE Gyms. Do the puzzle, fight the minions, do more of the puzzle, fight the boss, get the prize. Same formula. Same structure. Just outdoors much of the time and without the human element. Call an apple an orange and it's still an apple. I suppose it'll be nice to revisit most of the Kanto Gyms again...I say "most" because Misty's Starmie has permanently traumatised me after I tried to take it on with a Charmeleon my first time through Pokémon Red...I do not like Misty. Or Sabrina's awful tile puzzles. But it'll be nice to see Koga and Erika again!
Trials are fun and can be challenging (during an Egglocke), but I honestly enjoy Gyms more? Mostly because though I'm not a very competitive battler, fighting against the Gym Leaders was always a fun thing I enjoyed in the other games. So yes, I do hope for the Gyms return, though I wouldn't mind much if Trials (or something similar) become a 'here to stay' thing.
I liked having a break from the normal Gym format for Gen VII, but now I'd like to return to Gyms for Gen VIII. Although, possibly have them expanded upon in some way to make them more challenging. Maybe increase the complexity of the puzzles or give the Gym Leaders gimmicks to how their fights happen.
I think it's going to be fun to revisit the old gyms. I'm definitely looking forward to Lt. Surge's gym, as well as Sabrina's, as those two are the ones that had the most memorable puzzles. To be honest though, I like the idea of island trials. Maybe the games could incorporate the elements from the trials into the gyms, especially the ones that don't have much of a puzzle to them.
Simply put: no. Battles against monotype teams that don't even try to fix the obvious flaws of their type of choice isn't half a challenge. If they put some kind of rule such as different battle styles (doubles, triples, etc) or restrictions for what you can use on your team it would be partially fixed, tho. (LGPE tries to do just that, but the execution seems poor so far.) On the other hand, puzzles aren't usually what I would call "good", but they aren't bad either.
Gyms were fun and felt like a staple of the franchise, if I'm honest....but them being taken out in Alola left way less of an impact than I thought. Maybe it's because taking trials and being awarded Z-Crystals was already so similar to the gym format? Defeat your opponents, win an item akin to a badge. Despite how much I've grown adjusted to gyms, I'd still have prefered something unique and interesting this time around. That said, I'm fine with gyms in LGPE. It's the Kanto we all know and love so I can't expect otherwise haha. Perhaps in later generations, the series could try something new!
Tbh I didn’t mind that the gyms were gone, but I would like to see them again and keep the trials as an exclusive Alola thing.
I enjoyed the gyms more than I ever did with the trials so I will be happy if they return in the 2019 game
