    I have a feeling this is an issue that is polarising, but shouldn't be. At least, that is the impression I get on it.

    For those not aware, hand sanitizer is an alcohol-based product that is used as an alternative to hand soap. (Yes, alcohol. It's generally a form of rubbing alcohol, which is also found in certain kinds of mouthwash.) It's usually sold in similar containers, and usually is some sort of translucent gel - you rub it over your hands, and within a few seconds, it has done its job.

    What do you feel about hand sanitizer? Is it good? Bad? Is it an acceptable alternative to soap? Should it be shunned? Should it obscure soap? Are there other questions I haven't asked yet?

    Probably.

    :::: ::::

    My view on hand sanitizer is that it's actually a bad thing. Worse still, I have encountered people who extol it above hand soap. My case on the matter is actually pretty simple - hand sanitizer is actually bad for my hands. Granted, it will do its job - and a little too well. Alcohol is a very strong germ killer, and doesn't discriminate over which bacteria it kills, even the ones that are healthy for your skin.

    One thing I've also noticed about that is that it completely dehydrates my hands upon use, causing my skin to flake almost immediately, so I have to run water just to restore life to my hands. And if I have to do that, it would leave me worse off than soap anyway. However I admit that this is largely a health issue for my end - but I am probably not the only one whose body negatively reacts to it.

    What do the rest of you feel?

    One thing to make clear is that HAND SANITIZER IS NOT WASHING YOUR HANDS it is there only for use if your hands AREN'T visibly soiled. It only rids the bacteria it doesn't clean your hands like washing. NEVER replace washing with sanitizing just to cut corners WASH YOUR HANDS when you need!
    That said, it is good for keeping germs at bay in say, hospitals and schools I think it's ok. I use it myself when I need.

    Hand sanitizers are convenient for cleansing your hands on the spot, but they sure aren't substitutes for proper hand washing with soap and water. I personally don't use them on a daily basis, but I don't deny their usefulness and will use them if I have to.

    Hand sanitizer is convenient. You don't need water, unlike soap. I think it's pretty useful and handy, but I will use soap and water given the option. My skin gets irritated easily by its strength.

    I'm glad people here know the proper situation for hand sanitizer. It kills bacteria on your hands, but it does not remove other debris. Its for the situation of "My hands are dirty, but I don't have running water onhand to actually get rid of the things on my hands. I may as well just kill the germs and leave their corpses there, because doing that is better than doing nothing."

    I keep some in my car and in my backpack for work. For the sake of "I just got drivethru fast food and my hands have been all over my steering wheel" (when is the last time you actually washed a steering wheel?) and "It's lunchtime but the nearest bathroom with a sink is ten minutes away round trip and there goes my break" respectively. Its only purpose is a less-effective alternative when there's no running water onhand.

    Maybe I'll use it if I'm sick. Only if peer pressured though, at school if i blow my nose I'm like dang it I should go use the sanitizer now. As for the rest of these bacterias floating around me... I'll build up some natural immunity instead of using a protective bubble of sorts around my body. That and it kills the bacterias that are good for my skin. Yay for natural immunities build up by exposure, and sometimes actually getting sick. In the end that's the healthier way to go

    I personally don't like hand sanitizer. It dries out my hands and irritates my nose. I'm generally against antibacterial products being used in excess because it promotes antibacterial resistance. Since your body is constantly defending itself, using hand sanitizers may actually lower your resistance to diseases by killing good bacteria, which helps protect against bad bacteria. In a 2011 study conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "staff in facilities that experienced norovirus outbreaks were six times more likely to use hand sanitizers equally or more than soap and water for routine hand hygiene." I just don't feel too needy towards the use of hand sanitizer.

    I have a bottle of small bath and body hand sanitizeron my backpack pretty much all the time. I don'tuse it, rather I go use the restroom and use hand soap; but if that hand soap looks shady and what not, then I will use hand sanitizer.
    A bottle usually lasts me a couple months, if not a year. Germs got pretty much nothing on me.

    Hand sanitizer should only be used in public places, imo. After all, you can't keep wiping out the bacteria that gets on your hands through daily use, because otherwise you wouldn't have much of an immune system huh? (probably a wildddd accusation, I know, but I bet it has some kind of impact) 'Sides, I prefer using anti-bacterial soap at home after washing my hands. I go upstairs and use it nearly all the time after I use my hands for some kind of outside-the-norm task, such as interacting with the dog or before and after handling food.

    I almost never use hand sanitizer. I will go out of my way to find a sink and some soap if I need to wash my hands. Hand sanitizer is kinda iffy to me and I don't really want to use it all that much... ever.
