"And they lived happily ever after" is a staple ending that all fairy tales end with. Of course, not all stories are written with a happy ending in mind. Have you read many stories that don't have the stereotypical "lives happily ever after" endings? Did you like those stories, maybe even better than the ones that end with the "perfect" ending? And for those of you who are writers, do you prefer writing stories with happy endings or unhappy ones?

I do enjoy writing unhappy endings, but endings that aren't entirely unhappy. If you end a story with absolutely no closure or with only negative closure, it leaves the reader feeling dissatisfied, especially if it was a longer story. Sometimes you can use this effect of dissatisfaction to your advantage as a method of increasing the emotional impact, but in longer stories the lack of closure will more often than not bite you.

An ending that ends "well" but is still unhappy works though. I like using those, because it makes the reader remember the story longer, and think more about what the story portraid. A happy ending is often forgotten quickly. A painful ending, though, that sticks with you.

I am not a fan of the "Happy Ending." It feels too final for me to be happy. I like to imagine that there is still a life for the character to continue living (unless they died), even if that life is different from the story. If the character only lives happily for the rest of his life, then that's just dull and stupid. If the character defeats the main villain and secures happiness for the land, but he promises to continue his good-guy deeds, then I'm satisfied.

There are many other reasons why I don't like happy endings, and they can all be summed up in a story about happy endings. This explains my ideas far better than I think I can.

For happy and unhappy endings , I donot mind encountering any of them at a strory ,But unhappy endings Gives a burst of drama and action at the end of the story , it gives a closer bond to the story and life , for it can never be always be good or always be bad , I have read Stories such as Hamlet and Romeo And Julliet Which surprisingly Few know It to be a non Comedy story , So i guess ill have to side with unhappy endings , The Stories that end with happy endings Are Something the reader would expect in any Fairy tale but if it doesnt , Its sort of .. Well Exciting.

Unhappy endings with a next part is what makes me keep the interest on stories, reaching a "happy ever after" is good at the end. that would be when I read books,

When writing, I prefer to keep the "happy ever after," since what i mentioned before (the next part stuff) requires too much skills as writer and actually keeping the emotions and feelings and also catching the reader's attention is harder with that method.
