    Most of us use smilies across forums, instant messengers, chatboxes, or what-have-you as a way of expressing our emotions. How often do you use smilies? What are your favorites? What do you think of them overall? Some feel that a lack of smiley usage makes people come off as robotic, what is your stance on that?

    My personal favorite emotes are n~n, :D, :), ;P, and :3, though I'm quite partial to o: as well. Not quite sure why the o-shaped mouth comes first in that last one but that's what has ended up sticking. Can't forget the awesomeness of the Japanese smilies either, there's such a wide array of them and they're insanely expressive!

    Feel free to discuss here and don't hesitate to reply to other members' posts as well if something they say catches your eye.

    Note: Lake Valor's official Azelf emoticons are turned off here for a clearer discussion that keeps smilies in their text forms.

    The one emote I use a lot and really love is 8). It's a smiling face with sunglasses and I've always admired it. It totally expresses me and my coolness! notreally

    I use :33 a lot, and I'm not even sure why haha. I just like to use it.

    And of course the Japanese text emotes, preferably the really happy ones or the ones that look like they'd kill you while smiling.

    I don't use any smiles. I'm the guy who texts in full sentences with proper capitalization, punctuation, and grammar. They may call it robotic, I call it proper.

    There are a lot of emoticons I love using, but XD is the one I use most frequent, haha. I use them fairly often when chatting with friends or posting, though on LV I haven't been using them as much because I cbf'd to uncheck the "Enable emoticons" box every time I post. I hate using image-based emoticons/emojis/etc.; the Azelf ones are adorable but I still don't like using them because they just don't seem "me", if that makes any sense.

    Smilies have been a personal staple of mine for years, I hate how hard it can be to pick up what inflection someone intended from what they typed, and smilies can make that a lot easier. For example, if someone asks how I am, and I type "Fine." it looks a lot different than "Fine. :D" or "Fine. ;_;" All of these are probably read in a much different tone. It helps convey emotion and often makes conversations go a lot smoother and minimizes confusion or misunderstandings. When people don't use smilies at all, I tend to find myself worrying that they aren't enjoying talking to me, or they might just come across as intimidating. Not to say I think it's wrong to not use smilies, I just personally prefer it.

    That said, it can be a tad bit irritating when people overdo them. I've been known to overdo them myself in the past (if you look back on posts I made on the internet years ago, it wasn't uncommon to see things like ":DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD" or " XD :D :3 :DDD!!!!" and nothing else. lol) and over the years I've definitely cut down. Again, I'm not saying overuse of smilies is a bad thing, it's all just personal preference and what I go for.

    My favorite smilies hmm... it changes all the time, and I tend to use a large large variety of them, the only thing I will say specifically is that I have never ever been able to use :) and :(, I don't know why but I've never felt comfortable using those smilies, even now for demonstration purposes it feels odd. For happiness I'll tend to type ^_^ or :3 or c: or something, for a frown I might type something like :c or ]: or ;_;

    Going to be completely serious right now: being proper is for tryhards and whenever you're actually making an actual post like this one.

    whenever im not typing and just in text in a chatbox i just sound like this all the time lol :D

    ...That felt really weird to do that outside of a chatbox. I'm not doing that again.
    But, uh, I like (and use) the emoticon :D. It's just so happy.

    (Also, never use XD because that is an unholy emoticon used by 12 year olds. NEVER AGAIN, 12 YEAR OLD ME.)

    I have the urge to end every sentence with a smiley, all the time. I always just go for a simple :), :D or xD, but I also like x_x and O_O a lot... I don't use many special smileys though, just the most basic ones.

    I remember a few years back I would spam everyone with smiles and emotes. But honestly, I hardly use them. Its like a rare case when I'll use one, if I'm being sincere for instance, albeit you probably won't see me putting a emote after my sentence.

    On deviantArt and certain other sites, I have a habit of using these weird smilies even though they are kind of ugly:

    ouo

    OnO

    =w=

    ;~;

    '^'

    *w*

    I like using smiles like xD and :) as well as c:
    I feel like smiles are a way of emotion in the world of expressionless typing.

    I've considered using smilies, but for a while now I have avoided using them. I've just not been the biggest fan of using them, but I feel that'll change.

    I use smilies/emoticons all the time of course! :)

    Though really, I use emoticons because they can help show people the mood of your messages. Sometimes without an emoticon, people might view the context of your messages incorrectly. An emoticon is a cute and perfect way to provide friends and acquaintances the more definite meaning of your message.

    My all time favorite emoticon is the "squee" emote from DA [IMG]

    I use smilies quite often. They help to add context to a message that's otherwise just plain text. Which can be really helpful!

    I overuse :P and I know I overuse it. I have no idea why, it's sorta just become a habit by this point. :/

    Personally, I disliked smilies because I've found them to be awkward and clunky, yet text looks bland without them. On my phone I'll use only the :P smiley, and anytime else I'll use Emojis. Emojis are actual faces, so I prefer them a lot more than text-based ones. However, all the ones with the tongue out are creepy.. I wish they were more like the one we have here: :P
