Just curious if anyone has changed their opinion on a Pokémon. Did you once hate it but now like it, or even the other way around? Was it a Pokémon you once thought wasn't very special, but has grown on you over the years? Hopefully you get the point of my question. Sorry if it makes no sense. For me there have been quite a few times were my opinions have changed on particular Pokémon, but these are the most 'dramatic' cases. Aromatisse - Went from hating to loving. Like most people, I was quite disappointed when I found out Spritzee wouldn't be evolving into some badass plague doctor inspired mon. I thought Aromatisse looked incredibly weird. But over the years I've grown to like it quite a bit. In fact I find it quite adorable nowadays. I don't quite love it is much as Spritzee, and I still slightly wish it had looked more plague doctor-ish, but it's one of my top 5 favourite Kalos Pokémon regardless. Luxray - Went from loving to hating. I was obsessed with Luxray many years ago. Thought it was one of the coolest Pokémon out there, and having one on my Diamond team made me love it even more. She was such an awesome Pokémon. Unfortunately a few years ago I had an incident on deviantArt were myself and another Fakemon creator got into a fight because I thought he had copied my mega Luxray design (and to be fair I did overreact a bit, and looking back his design only shared a few similar features with mine, but mentally I wasnt well at the time). Due to not feeling right mentally, this incident, though probably minor to everyone else, had quite a bit impact on me and even made me quit deviantArt on the spot. It also ruined Luxray for me. Honestly, I've tried liking it again, I really have, but every time I look at it, it reminds me of that day. Raikou - A Pokémon I once didn't care about much, that has become one of my favourites. When I first got into Pokémon I didn't really care much about Raikou. Compared to Entei and Suicune it was lame. They both had major roles in movies, and seemed to be more loved by fans. Too me Raikou was just the boring 'sidekick'. That all changed when I watched Zoroark: Master of Illusions. Seeing Raikou in action made me realise how cool it actually was, and over the years it has grown on me so much that It's become one of my favourite Pokémon.
I think a majority of people know that I used to hate on Ampharos. For a pretty petty reason too. That it looks like a kangaroo instead of a sheared sheep. After having it as my avatar for so long and drawing it more often, I've grown fond of the little yellow lighthouse.
When I started Moon, going in mostly blind (I only knew the starters, the legendaries, and the version exclusives as well as a few early/popular mon that people were leaking everywhere- such as the Alolan Vulpix/Ninetales, Togendamaru, and Pikipek) I considered Cutiefly a 'meh' Pokémon and only caught one for the Pokédex/to learn its typing. Near the end of the game I needed a final Pokémon and Toucannon wasn't sitting well with me for whatever reason. I was running out of ideas, and was starting to think about looking online for team ideas when I decided 'why the heck not' and tried the Cutiefly I caught way back at the beginning of the game and never touched. That Cutiefly became the Ribombee that ultimately won the Champion battle for me <3 Cutiefly/Ribombee are now a pair of Pokémon that I love and cherish~
I've always wanted a Noivern, so when I was finally able to get one in my X game, I was super excited. It really wasn't worth all the trouble I went through to train and evolve it, and even as a Noivern I was pretty disappointed. It only became viable because I threw a Choice Specs on it, and it didn't even have a hindering nature. I also remember desperately wanting a Beautifly when I first played ORAS, so I was excited to catch a Wurmple and hopefully evolve it. Of course... it evolved into Cascoon instead of Silcoon, and then into Dustox, and I felt pretty disappointed. Thankfully, Dustox proved me wrong due to its surprising defenses, and its special attack wasn't half bad either. I ended up having a newfound respect for the poison moth.
There's been a few. Genesect: I went from hating to loving this damn thing. When I first saw Genesect, I thought its design was kind of lame, and it quite honestly just reminded me of a reskinned Kabutops. The only thing that redeemed it for me was the movie: Genesect and the Legend Awakened. If it wasn't for the fact that this thing could transform into a type of flying rover, how they were visually portrayed in the movie, or with their movements and battle technique, I'd probably still have the same opinion on it. I can now proudly say that it's easily one of my favorites. All because of something so simple! Ho-Oh: Once again, I went from hating to loving. Between Lugia and Ho-Oh, Lugia was an easy favorite. Something about Ho-Oh's design used to strike me as odd and naked for some reason? It felt more flat than it did feathery and I hated it and its color scheme as a child. However, once I played through Heart Gold (after Soul Silver of course), its entrance cut scene just blew me away and I finally realized how truly colorful and beautiful this Pokémon was. Now, its appearance in the recent I Choose You! movie once again, unexpectedly impressed me with how majestic it was. While it might not be a newfound favorite of mine, I certainly adore it more than I did initially.
Garchomp for me, while I still like it is gone from "omg is the coolest pokémon ever" to "i still like yu but you're not in the top anymore". There's probably a ton of other mons Iv'e changed about over the years but that's just the first one that came to mind so I might return with more later.
For me it is Beedrill. I used to loathe it. Way too common, annoying, and mostly, weak. Then I was playing an X-wonderlocke and one of my first trades was a Weedle. I despaired but still took it along on the team. I found myself shoving it in the box, not wanting to have to trade it away after I won a Gym. I realized that slowly I was starting to like the Pokémon. He reached level 50 before I had to trade it away and I am still sad that I have. But I found a new respect for the original bee Pokémon.
I guess for me my opinions on Pokémon only tend to change when they're part of a duo or trio. Like I used to prefer Hitmonchan, but after a while I started to prefer Hitmonlee.
Maybe the only one that counts is Emolga. I don't like the majority of GenV Pokémon, but Emolga has kinda grown on me, primarily because of its cuteness.
I never really used Keldeo in the games, so it didn't appeal much to me. However, I used it on a Monotype Competitive team and was amazed by how good it actually is! It's moderately defensive with 91/90//90 bulk, really fast with 108 speed and a hard hitter with 129 special attack. What I like about it the most is the Calm Mind + Substitute combo, since it can set up substitute fast and start setting up with ease. Water and Fighting is great offensive and defensive typing as well. Overtime I really came to appreciate the little aqua pony.
I didn't hate any particular Pokémon, but there were a few that I didn't like either. Mudkip. When I first got Mudkip, I though, "ew this is my starter?" I felt like it was underwhelming for a while until it evolved into Swampert. Suddenly I was completely destroying my opponents with earthquake. Despite its lack luster looks, I grew to adore that water ground type and I even found Mudkips appearance kinda cute.
Long ago when I first started Pokémon X (I was a noob at this time) I took Fennekin, probably because I thought it was cute. Now I love Greninja so much more <3 Even longer ago, I took Torchic/Blaziken in AS because it was my favorite (prob ‘cause it looked cool). When I re-started it, I tried Treecko and now it’s my favorite Hoenn starter! Its last evolution had so much speed and power. And, Slugma was just a meh Pokémon for me, but when I got it as my first full odds shiny (it that how you call it?), it became a little special. Same thing for Goomy as I used it as "me" here. And at the beginning, Ribombee was just a super cute Pokémon, but now that I’ve used it and seen how poserful it was, I love it even more! <3
Most of Gen V I always thought Greninja was kind of weird, but after using it in Smash, it grew on me a lot and now it's one of my favorites.
Gen 5 seems to be a polarizing place. I mostly agree. Particularly I used to like Kyurem and dislike both of the other mascots, but a few years ago that turned entirely upside down for me: now I think Kyurem is needlessly angry-looking and doesn't really represent wuji, while the black and white Dragons have each held pretty significant places in any FF I've written since then, especially since they're such a good reflection of Dao.
