This is the music that, every time you listen to it, tears you up inside and makes your heart ache. As time goes on, it may make you less sad when listening to it, but you'll always feel a little melancholy whenever you hear it. What's that music for you?

This is one of the last songs my high school concert band performed before I graduated, and coupled with its somber tone, it creates a lot of feels for me.

Moonlight Sonata is just really... mournful. It just sounds really sad, lonely.
KISEKI from the Pokémon X/Y ending credits is... not sad, but hopeful. It still makes me shed a few tears sometimes, but in a good way, as if my heart is mending once again.

One of the saddest (and best) soundtracks is the one from Thor 2 when Queen Frigga dies. It's absolutely one of my favourite soundtracks from any movie, ever.

When I first heard this song it destroyed me... literally I don't know why I broke down.

Now I only cry for 5 minutes when I hear it... which is an accomplishment.

Christina Perry <3 This is the first time I'm hearing the Nightcore version and it's so much better. It's a sad song, quite so.

I've got a few of varied genres that might fit the tastes of someone needing to feel a little low (so you can rise even higher later!).

1: Do you like mid-century jazz? "Cry Me a River", as performed by Julie London (not by Michael Buble, he kind of ruined it, even though everything else he touches is gold), reminds me of every heart I've broken. And there are a few. Now that I listen to it again... *sniff*... WHY! Just excuse me for a moment, I'm totally not running into another room to weep loudly and unabashedly.

2: How about classical? Well, not literally classical, unless we're talking classic rock. Apocalyptica's cover of "Until it Sleeps" (originally by Metallica) is quite a sad song for me, but it might be more that it reminds me of something, If you're worrying about the first five letters of "Metallica", don't worry, Apocalyptica is a group of Cellists who only sometimes have a drummer and rarely even have a borrowed vocalist. This is just pure, smooth, heartfelt, serene string music.

3: "Kaltes Grab" (Cold Grave) by the German band Megaherz. They're a band that's 50% rock, 50% metal, 50% ballad, and some other percent of something else that wraps up that little metaphor. It's a long, sad song sung in German (feel free to google-translate the lyrics, but they're quite sad indeed. One line is "Damn desire to live, you're in my way!"), and the sadness and emotion of it starts to show up more at the 3 minute mark, and gradually ramps up to its climax closer to the end.

I know several others that are super-duper sad and choke me up just listening to the preludes, so these are pretty mild on me. I'm not in a mood where I need to let out any emotions right now, so I'd rather not generate new unnecessary sads in myself.

I've got a few. I tried to just do one per source material, or this would be an epic list mostly consisting of Undertale and Madoka Magica.

One of the most tearjerking to me is one that requires context to be so. It's actually a rather happy tune if you don't know when and why it plays. The reason is spoilers for the pacifist ending of Undertale, but if you've gotten that far then you'll know why I can't help tearing up at this.

This one is also a lot sadder in context, and its from Madoka Magica, which is pretty much all sad and all context. This never played in the series, but instead was in the movie version. Between the context for this song and the title, it is a definite tearjerker.

    I Miss You

This one is sad of its own merit, though knowing that it was sung after the death of the singer's wife and in his own older age just makes it heavier. I haven't heard much of Johnny Cash's other songs, but this one is just incredible.

Lastly, a song that makes me incredibly melancholy because of the impact of the lyrics. I still am not quite sure what the title means, but the words themselves have a hell of a weight behind them.

Damn, this theme. I cannot agree more, listening to it still makes my heart ache.

One that I found recently is one from the pmd series. These games are just so heart wrenching, it's not at all what I expected out of a Pokémon game, but all the same I welcomed it and one theme that came to mind was
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWHPbWIFEXg
When posting this I actually had to take a moment to breath, cause this theme was striking me hard in the heart. What makes it worse is when you link it to the scene that takes place with it. I won't say though cause spoilers.

Now to find out who left those damn onions here

There were times I'd spontaneously tear up when I heard the Clannad After Story OP. Not anymore, thankfully. The original Hoenn credits theme is also quite emotional.

Ignoring how completely and utterly Tokyo Ghoul and Kaneki have taken over my life, the music box version of the OP, Unravel, is very melancholic to me. I'm always a sucker for music box versions since they make everything sound sadder but. Unravel is just something I absolutely adore, and it's dumb but it's kinda helping me through stuff.

This one's shorter, but one of the better ones in my opinion.

I remember this one. I actually teared up hearing it, too.

On my side of this, I'd say this song takes the cake:

I love the song, but it breaks my heart literally every time I listen to it. Several people close to me have suicidal tendencies, and this song is the embodiment of the struggle that we face together.

Cancer by My Chemincal Romance makes me cry every time I listen to it it's so sad. The one line " 'Cause the hardest part of this is leaving you" is so upsetting to me and never fails to make me cry. The song is about a dying cancer patient who knows he doesn't have much time left but he doesn't want to die and the song is like his will. If you listen to it get ready to cry it's just so sad

First off -- Carmen, by Lana Del Rey. Reminds me of a close friend, really because she told me identifies with it, and that's really heartbreaking when you read the lyrics.

"Darling, darling, doesn't have a problem -- lying to herself 'cause her liquor's top shelf."

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6K8Uq88BEQ

Teen Idle, by Marina and the Diamonds. A song about wasting your adolescence, letting your life pass you by and trample you, and all you can do is complain.

"Adolescence, it don't make sense. The little loss of innocence. The ugly years of being a fool, ain't youth meant to be beautiful?"
