Are there any star gazers here? When do you typically go it? Any advice for new observers? Have you seen anything unique (aliens...)?

I've always loved how pretty the night sky is. I live in a pretty wide open area that is sort of an urban/city mix, so the stars are usually pretty visible at night unless its cloudy. Whenever I am bored, have insomnia, or feeling down, I just go onto my roof where its nice and peaceful and just look at the stars and think about stuff. I usually get a lot of crazy ideas haha, I'm such a dreamer its kind of sad.

I'd recommend finding a nice, quiet, wide open place outside that is sort of high off the ground such as a roof, a hill, or some other landmark and grab a blanket or too and try to get comfortable. Though its important not to fall asleep because you can catch a cold at night depending on the weather. If you have a telescope that's great but sometimes just using your eyes to take it all in is better. I like to play music too and it makes it all even more so out of this world. It can be really relaxing and life changing too. For some reason I'm always calm after just gazing at the night sky and soaking in all the peaceful quiet and glows of the stars and moonlight.

Going running outside at night can also be amazing but sometimes its terrifying and I'd only recommend doing it if you're in a safe environment you know really well.

Honestly? Not as much as I used to, or want to. When I do, I usually just lie down in my yard and look at the stars. So far, I've seen a blood moon, super blood moon, and a lunar eclipse(wasn't dark so not as good, but still cool!)

...Oh wait, you said lunar eclipse, not solar. Still, I'm here now, so I may as well speak.

I live very close to a largely populated area, and it suffers very greatly from light pollution. The only 'stars' visible from where I am aren't really stars; they're planets. I have seen everything from Venus to Saturn at least once each, though I've only seen Saturn once. Venus is by far the most common.

When out camping once, I was given a chance to look into the clear night sky. The stars were much more visible there, and it was quite spectacular. In fact, it was almost shocking - compared to the middling blue expanse I was used to back home, the aether above was painted a deep midnight blue with white dots of varying sizes all over its visible surface. It was so densely packed with stars that it was almost unbelievable.

Sadly that memory is long behind me.

I love looking up at the sky at night when it's clear and seeing millions of stars sparkling on the inky expanse like tiny sequins on black velvet. It gives me a feeling of tranquility and insignificance, which is somehow quite pleasant. As for what I've seen, I believe I've managed to catch a lunar eclipse, a solar eclipse, a blood moon, and this rare occurrence when the crescent moon and two stars were in just the right position to create two eyes and a smile.

A few years back, there was one time when a bunch of friends and myself decided to bring picnic mats, food, and drinks, and lie down in the middle of an empty field to watch the stars and perhaps catch a glimpse of any meteors that might be passing through (there was news about a meteor shower that night). We didn't manage to catch anything special in the end because it was a little cloudy, but simply lying there staring up at the sky and enjoying quiet conversation was a really enjoyable experience.

I live in an area pretty far from city lights. Every time I bring a lady home in the evening she always looks up and goes all "Wow!" and all that, because it's probably been months since these city girls saw so many stars. That said... I don't often stargaze. I like looking at the moon, but the stars just don't grab my attention. I don't see constellations, I just see randomly assorted dots of white dust on a black computer monitor. It 's unromantic, I know. Even during meteor showers, I'll usually just stick around and watch for a few, ten minutes at most. But laying there for an hour, staring at a mostly unchanging sky, hoping to see a split-second line of white in my periphery? Not my idea of a good time.

Ooh, I love the sky, and that includes the night sky. I have an amazing telescope in which I can see the planets. Once, my sister and I had seen Mars from there, and I was over the moon!

We've come across lot's of eclipses, and once three years ago, a solar @[member="Eclipse"] (I'm sorry, I had to do that when you said that you were associated with solar eclipses...)!

My sister and I once experienced a little strange 'aurora' like phenomenon where a green area of light in the sky appeared out of nothingness and then folded itself and disappeared, followed by a light meteor shower. I would never forget that. We had also seen many shooting stars.

Other than this, my sister and I have a star chart that explains and pinpoints all constellations and where and when to find them.

Oh cool, that's the aurora australis (A.K.A the Southern Lights). You're in Australia so yeah it is possible for you to catch a glimpse of it

Before I lived in Houston, I lived in rural areas (except for one year in Austin), so I could've stargazed if I was interested... But I wasn't :P
I still can on weekends, but like before, I'm not really interested lol
To be honest, I can pretty much create a night sky by taking a picture of the pitch black on my phone and applying the black and white filter haha

No, no, it wasn't an aurora. I'm not even sure what is what! It was a sudden glowy, green haze and my first thought was: "Aliens!" although I do not think they exist.

A "sudden glowy green haze" is exactly what an aurora can look like.

But it was such a tiny area in the sky - it couldn't possibly be an aurora! A thumbs area if you point your hand to the sky, that is.

Wow! You guys see really cool things. I wish I could enjoy a starry night, but I live in a city that's kind of polluted so it's pretty rare for me to see anything but a few stars and a pretty moon. I'd love to see a sky of full stars haha. I would love to see an aurora too someday, so hopefully life isn't too short.

Take a flight that goes to the other side of the world. :P Planes go north before going east or west, so there's a chance you could see one.

It is actually possible. They don't have to be as grand as they are in the pictures

Oh, okay. Well then I guess we were lucky to see it! But that doesn't explain the multitude of lines that flashed across the sky after the aurora came.
