Should homework be a thing? Do you believe it's an effective way to help students retain information, or just busy work that adds unnecessarily to their stress?

Try to look at it objectively, and not just "I don't like homework so it should go away", really think about it. Do you think it's helped you to learn? Or is it just completely pointless and nothing but detrimental? You can also share your own experiences to back up your argument, or experiences of people you know (how it's affected people around you). Either way, please don't just say "yes" or "no", elaborate! Give reasonings!

Homework is honestly a good thing as it gives students practice. I remember a while back I had a really tough time with balancing equations, but with the homework I was able to practice more and it really helped out my grade with all the work I did. I feel like without homework I wouldn't be motivated to try to practice doing anything I had trouble with since I would feel like I had nothing to gain.

I find that so many people blow off homework anyway that it isn't really doing a ton. Maybe we should just stay in school a bit longer and do all the work there.

    Homework definitely helps.

But the way school systems go about grading is all wrong. They make grades sound like the most important thing ever, so kids are going homework, studying, taking tests, for a good grade.

    No.

To retain information better, kids need to actually be positively motivated to learn. Grades simply put unnecessary stress on students, which causes them to hurry through work in a quest for the holy A+. Not only that, but grades are extremely biased. Simply put, a good relationship between student and teacher can be the difference between pass and fail, or B+ and A-.

But yeah, I'd say homework is definitely a necessary thing. It's not good for some people, who can't find the drive to do it, but for me, it's definitely something that needs to be done.

It really depends on each individual person. Some people can look at a paper, jot down something quick, and they've got it down. For others, homework is a horrible way to strengthen memory. What type of learner you are can affect your opinions too, namely visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Homework wouldn't work as well for an auditory learner as, per say, a kinesthetic learner.

I'm more of a visual/kinesthetic learner myself. I often find that's its more difficult to sit through someone explaining something.

For me, I would say that homework is pointless. I say this because I honestly LOVE to learn new things. The teachers don't have to give mandatory work for me to do because I'm already looking up information on the topics from other sources to learn all I can about it. The homework I have usually doesn't teach me anything new and only serves to take up time that I could have spent researching the topic to learn more about it.

I also tend to involve myself in extra-curricular activities, so homework just gets in the way of that, too. I help run a leadership club that I wish I could focus more time into, but can't due to the heaps of homework given to me every night.

For other people, however, I can understand why it is assigned. I know that most people aren't as enthusiastic as I am about self-assigning research projects on random topics, and that most students don't pay close attention in class. I can understand the homework being given to those people, who are not likely involved in extracurricular activities.

I personally think that homework should be given on a student-by-student basis. Those who have proven that they are able and willing to study the course material should be able to assign themselves projects/homework that works best for them but still allows them to prove that they are learning the topics. Isn't that the point of homework, anyway? To simply prove that you know the material and have been paying attention? So why can't I prove it in my own way that works better for everyone?

Honestly, I think the entire education system in the U.S. is completely messed up. I want to become an English teacher someday to hopefully influence education for the better, but I doubt my voice will make a difference.

Homework definitely isn't there just to annoy us, it's there to help... But since a lot of people don't make their homework, I don't think that it's really that effective anymore.

    I will say this:
The purpose of homework is practice for the sake of proficiency.
If you want to be able to understand how to use the squeeze theorem in calculus, or how to determine the orbitals of Nickel in chemistry, it does in fact help a lot to practice these formulas and methods. While I would love to say that I can remember every theory and formula as well as I can remember conversations from years in the past, it would be foolish of me to do so.
Ultimately, that is really what it comes down to: Do you want to be proficient in a subject? If so, then yes, homework is needed.

I say no to homework. I mean, look at Finland, they don't have homework and they're supposed to be really smart XD
That and, as Red said, most people, including me, blow it off, so what's the point?

I don't like the "do this and that exercise by that date" kind of homework. I'm more in for the bigger projects, the kind of homework that you actually have to put some effort in, but you also get more time to do so. If I'm not motivated to make homework, I really won't do it, but actual projects usually interest me a lot more.

Should homework be a thing? Of course (at least in my opinion); now I'll evaluate....

-Time: If you completely understand what you're doing then homework should be a breeze. If you are having troubles, that simply means that you're not understanding and allows the instructor or teacher to help you in understanding how to do something and move on. So, if you understand what you're doing it should only take an hour at most (IF it's a project or essay, I'd say different), and if you're having troubles don't try and try and try.... just wait and go see the teacher for help so you can understand it easier and know how to do it (and not just get the answers from a bud).

-Improvement Can Happen: Through many studies homework can actually help in other things. It allows your mind to work more and can eventually make things easier to learn in general, understand things as well, and just learn quicker.

-Your Future: Depending on what you want to achieve in your life, homework can help. If you want to become a marine biologist then doing your bio homework will help you a lot in making sure you fully know how to do this because it may be in your future!

-Teaches You Things: Doing homework can definitely affect how people see you. If you do your homework you'll be seen as responsible and a reliable person. If you fail to do it maybe you need to learn some organization and how do use your time more wisely (PLAN). Someone only wants to hire you if you do what you're asked in a respectable amount of time, not 4 days later then asked for (jobs have deadlines).

-Studying: Homework can help you study over problems on a test. You can go over how it is suppose to be worked out and maybe create a study guide from your homework to prepare yourself for an upcoming test or quiz.

I'll add more if I can.

Homework does not help people learn.

There are two types of learning: passive and active

the problem with school systems nowadays and with homework is that they focus on passive learning, which only helps you retain information for a short period of time. enough to pass the test, and thats about it.

active learning such as projects, however, force you to make connections in your brain that help you retain the information better and be able to apply it to real world situations more readily.

Homework only adds unnecessary stress and drama to students lives, while not helping them learn in the long run.

I am not a big fan of homework, yet its education and it is important.
It is something to review what you did in the class and learn how well you done.
It gives a better understanding to the lesson.
It gives thinking and memory, and develops positive study skills and habits that will last
for the end of your life. It encourages to use time wisely, and how to work independantly.
It takes responsibility, and gets us ready for the new lesson.
It helps to learn useful resources in the websites, and extend learning by applying skills to new situations.
Yet, homework may be taking long, or its not that useful.
It may be had to done in a short period, and it gives stress and gets sick by doing too much homework, and
doing the homework a lot is bad for your health. Its like an assestment because its basically showing, do you know the solution.
Homework seems like a one chance, like if you get a bad grade, thats it. Homework is not to learn and improve, its basically, solve
the problem in a limited amount of time. Welp. I dont know which side I am choosing, but hopefully this makes good reasons.

Homework is important, but I don't see why children have to stay in school for so many hours only to get a load of homework as well. Maybe shorter school hours or less homework would be good because stress is not a pleasant thing to have. But I don't agree with getting rid of homework altogether because even if you don't like something, education is vital for your future.

Honestly homework is the best study method and refreshing way to keep track of what you're learning, I have no problem with it. My only peeve in the US is why are you in school for 8+hours learning the same thing 5 days out of the week, it is a waste of time and it drains you. I mean I can see why homework is strongly disliked, but still, high school is a chore by itself.

I personally think homework is important - that is, depending on the type of homework given. I'm against those "define these terms" type of homework, but I'm totally for the "solve these problems" homework. This might not apply to everyone, but for some who have a hard time understanding lessons at school, they will be able to practice better during their free time. At home, they have access to the internet, where they could read more about the lessons they don't understand. They will also be able to review the lessons they had at school. This is purely based on my personal experience though, and I'd understand why people don't want homework. The real problem is that nowadays, kids are becoming more lazy and they don't do their homework anymore. That's the reason why homework isn't a very effective way of learning anymore.
