Each of us has our own unique experience with video games. We are introduced to new series in different ways than others and have different experiences with the same game! This thread is about listing all of your favorite series and how to came to become involved with the series. I'll start.

Mario- Older siblings played before I was born, I hopped right in.

    Donkey Kong- Same as Mario

Legend of Zelda- My older brother got Ocarina of Time when I was younger, making me hooked instantly.

    Star Fox- Same as Mario

Fire Emblem- Saw Marth and Roy in Melee, later Ike in Brawl. Saw a demo for Awakening on the 3ds, was hooked instantly, and the rest is history.

Pokémon- Got a copy of Emerald when I was younger, hooked instantly. Had seen the show a couple of times, but nothing significant.

Kid Icarus- Heard good things about Uprising from the internet. I obtained a copy and had my expectations crushed.

Animal Crossing- One of my friends had it when I was 8 or 9, loved what I saw and got a copy of the Gamecube version for my birthday.

Xenoblade Chronicles- I saw some things about it here and there, but nothing too specific. All I knew is that I wanted to play it. Badly. I got a *new* Nintendo 3ds just to play it and was blown away by my all time favorite game. (in case you're wondering, X was okay and 2 was horrible imo)

Final Fantasy- I believe I first played XII when I was teenager, picked up some of the others over the years.

Splatoon- I had heard good things about it on the internet, so I eventually bought it. Great series.

Persona- A youtuber named RelaxAlax made a video about it late last year, which gave me an desire to play it. Joker was later announced for Smash, so I felt the time was almost ripe to play it. I got a PS4, played it, and loved it. HOO BOY.

    Crash Bandicoot- Same as Mario

Spyro the Dragon- Same as Mario

Super Smash Bros- Played Melee as a friends house and was hooked instantly. I've gotten every installment of the series since then and even a copy of the original.

I don't have a big list of games that I play...at least regularly, but here are the ones that first come to mind while typing this.
Pokémon: I saw my brothers play Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Sapphire, Stadium, and Hey You! Pikachu! I got interested and started playing Sapphire as my first game.

Megaman: I watched one of my brothers play a lot of Megaman 64 and Battle Network and started playing Battle Network 6 as my first game, and I continued playing the games as I found them.

Fire Emblem: Once again, I watched one of my brothers play one of the games, and found the story and gameplay both interesting so when I heard that Awakening was coming out, I asked for it and ended up loving the game series from that point on.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Ever since I can remember, I watched and played the game a lot beside my family, it is sort of a family favorite. Anyway, I've always liked that sort of game.

Super Smash Brothers: I think that this game is the newest addition to the games that I regularly play. I first heard about it at a band Lock-in during 6th grade and someone brought Smash Brawl and watched other people play until I took up the courage to play it myself. I ended up loving it and later got Smash 3ds when I finally got my own 3ds.

Deeeeefinitely don't have a huge list of games, but here we go~

Pokémon: I was a kid in the 90s, lmao. Strangely enough, though, I didn't jump on the hype train with the games. Instead, I'd actually gotten into it through the anime, as I'd heard a bunch of classmates talk about a weird cartoon in the early morning hours. Having grown up with weird cartoons in the early morning hours, you bet I was there. After spending months getting addicted to the anime, I finally made the jump with a copy of Red, just to see what this half-hour cartoon on crack was advertising.

Ingress: So basically, for the majority of 2014, I was constantly moving, having relocated from Boston (which I loved) to NYC (which I hated but needed a job desperately). The move did not go well, nor did the job, and I wound up having to move no fewer than four times and switch to a completely new job before I'd finally settled down. This did not do wonders for my psyche or my social life, so I spent a lot of time in my apartment and on Tumblr. One day, I stumbled across a hilarious post about an Ingress player at level 1, level 4, and level 8 (growing increasingly conspiracy-theory-ish), but I was curious. I watched the intro video, realized it was hella sci-fi (i.e., right up my alley), learned it was basically a game where you went out and explored your neighborhood, and just ... immediately downloaded it because I desperately needed an incentive to get out of the house. I kinda stumbled through it for the first few levels, half in and half out, until a local player met up with me and drew me into the local faction. I've been playing it pretty hard since.

Minecraft: Hella short story compared to the above. I watched Markiplier play Drunk Minecraft and got so into it that I had to try it for myself. Minecraft, that is. Not drunk Minecraft. Although I've done drunk Minecraft too, and it's not that bad.

Stardew Valley: Oddly not because of Markiplier but instead because I'd heard about it through ... everywhere and learned that it was basically Harvest Moon but better. I used to play Harvest Moon for SNES on an emulator back in high school, so I was kinda looking for not only a nostalgia trip but also a calm, chill game to play when I was really bored. I got both in spades.

Pokémon -- got a brand new copy of Pearl on my DS Lite + started watching DP in both English and Cantonese dubs

Persona -- heard that Miyano Mamoru plays a character in Persona 5. I'm a huge fan of his work as both a seiyuu and a singer, but that time I was craving the kind of voice he used as Ryuji.......needless to say Ryuji is still my favourite character, and also, I got more into the MC's seiyuu (Fukuyama Jun) and other seiyuus in P5 because of this game. Same for the older 3 and 4 titles -- got into the games for the seiyuu, got more into the seiyuu of the major characters as a result.

Zelda -- played Phantom Hourglass on my DS Lite a long time ago but when I really entered the fandom it was through BOTW.

    (All others are mobile franchises)

Fate/GrandOrder -- the seiyuu involved in the larger franchise got me into it

Most other mobile games I play are idol franchise games where the major reason why I started is for cast. Teehee

Is very short, to be honest, as I prefer reading or physical games over video games, but here I go~

Pokémon (GameBoy to DS): I saw a figurine of Ash and Pikachu, tried watching the anime, got interested, finished the first season then played the first games. Or was it the other way around?
Mobile Legends (Android): Classmates play it, I tried it, now I regularly play it.

Yeah, this list is too short.

I've been a lifelong Halo fan ever since I watched my dad play the first game on the Xbox. That was eighteen years ago and I still love everything about the series. Can't wait to go to Outpost Discovery this summer!

I blame my brother for getting me into Destiny. He needed another person to do the 6 player raids and I've loved doing raids ever since.

Gears of War was introduced to me by my friend. It was a little bit excessive especially with the strong language, violence and blood (not that I didn't like it) but it's another favorite series of mine. Plus I share the same name as the main character :D

I like to play games, but I'm definitely not much of a gamer. For all the series that I've played, I mostly just got into them because my older siblings used to play them, and then I tried to play them too (Five year old me wasn't very good at Zelda or Mario games). Even now all the games that I play are mostly Pokémon, Zelda, and Mario, which are all series that I grew up watching and playing.

I’m an only child, so most of these series and games were found through other means. For fun, the year I was introduced to each entry will be listed.

Mario (2010) - Saw an TV ad for New Super Mario Bros and quickly asked my Mom for a DS Lite. It ended up being my first non-educational video game.

Sonic (2010) - After playing some fan made flash games, I picked up the DS version of Colors.

Pokémon (2010) - I bought some cards a year earlier and the commercials for Heartgold and Soulsilver peaked my interest.

Kirby (2011) - Back when I used GameFly, I rented Mass Attack and was instantly hooked. Even though it plays very differently from the main series titles, that signature Kirby charm is still there.

Zelda (2011) - I bought Ocarina of Time when it was new because I was desperate for something new to play on my 3DS. Now I’ve played every mainline title in the series.

Minecraft (2011) - One of my friends from grade school showed me the Xbox 360 port and I was immediately interested. The next day, I asked my parents for the PC version (back when it was $40) and played it religiously. I do not regret a second of thousands of hours I’ve poured into this game.

Animal Crossing (2014) - Yet another game I rented before owning a copy. The borderline therapeutic gameplay was unlike anything I had tried before.

Shovel Knight (2014) - I was introduced to my all time favorite game from the countless YouTube videos people were making during it’s release. Once my allowance came in, I got the Wii U version and haven’t been the same since.

Ace Attorney (2015) - The 3DS remaster of the original trilogy was on sale, and I heard so many great things about the series. I then spent the next year binging all of the games (except for Dai Gyakuten Saiban 1 and 2).

Undertale (2015) - Antdude, one of my favorite Youtubers, covered this game a week after it came out. Since it’s passionate following hadn’t formed yet, I was able to play through the entire game blind. It was a magical experience to say the least.

Earthbound (2015) - Since I wasn’t born when the SNES was still being produced, I never got to try this masterpiece until it released on the Wii U virtual console. I sucked at it, but the catchy music and humor kept me going. Once I’m better at Japanese, I vow to import a physical copy.

Final Fantasy (2016) - The series was in the back of my mind for years, but I never gave it a shot until the PC port went on sale a few years ago. Despite the blocky graphics, I was still sucked in.

Persona/Shin Megami Tensei (2017) - When the initial hype for Persona 5 was still going strong, everything I heard sounded right up my alley. A modern setting, turn based combat, and some disco inspired songs? Sign me up! I even bought my first Sony console just to play it.

Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons (2018): After loving Stardew Valley so much, I had to try the games that inspired it.

I was introduced to basically all of the video games I’ve played by my brother. This would include Pokémon, Mario, Kirby, Minecraft, Smash Bros, and Undertale (in about that order). I could go on and tell stories about when I first played them, but that would take up a lot of space. The only video games I’ve played without the influence of my brother is Fire Emblem, because my main in Smash Bros is Ike and I wanted to play the game he was from, and Overwatch, because a friend introduced it to me. (I don’t play regularly but if I had money I would definitely buy.)

Usually I do research into any game that interests me. If I like what I see I go for it, or if I get good recommendations from friends I'll pick it up.

Okay buckle up this is gonna be a long one!
Mario: Come on, probably everyone played Mario in their childhood. I rediscovered my sister's SNES and played Super Mario World. 'Twas a really nice game, and to this day probably my favourite Mario.
Sonic: I never really got into Sonic games until I saw an ad for Sonic and the Black Knight. The game was short but it was super fun, had a pretty good storyline and a mindblowingly good OST. Definately worth the sore arm the next day.
Animal Crossing: Me and Animal Crossing share a pretty special relationship. I don't remember quite how I got into it, I think I used to be part of a really old cheat code/game trick share message board and the stuff for Animal Crossing looked really cool. It defo helped me out a lot, and some of my happiest memories are connected to that game.
MOTHER: So this is a funny one. I was like 6 or 7 and me and my bro were playing Melee. I really wanted to know who Ness was, but I could only find English footage on the Internet. Now a normal german kid would stop there, but no, not me, I literally taught myself English by watching a walkthrough of Earthbound. I would love to go back to whoever played that and sub to them, but I can't find it to save my life. It also quickly turned into my favourite RPG series of all time.
Touhou: I used to enjoy watching the early days of Let's Plays and I remember there was this one dude that loved Touhou, and I tried it out and it was real fun. Good stuff, but I haven't played it since Unidentified Fantastic Object. Should probably catch up.
Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons: This came up after I fell in love with Animal Crossing, and I think I started out with Harvest Moon DS which is definately one of the better entries of that series really, really fun gameplay, and I am stuck on it until today.
Rune Factory: I got into Rune Factory with Rune Factory 3, same reason as Harvest Moon, and I enjoy it just as much, if not more.
Pokémon: Me and my family used to share our games, so I started with Pokémon Yellow, and immediately got addicted. It was honest fun, and to this day, it's still one of the series that gave me some of my best moments, just behind Animal Crossing.
Fire Emblem: Started with wanting to know who Marth and Roy were, ended with me hating Arvis, Geneology is so good, ngl.

Most games I get into are mostly out of curiosity for the most part. I had never heard of Persona 5 before I had decided to play it, but I just decided to take a risk and try it. Same for Hollow Knight. And I ended up loving both of them. I do research games though, usually picking from ones that are frequently recommended on various sites, though I go into them blind for the most part unless I've been anticipating their release like if the game is associated with a show/anime/movie that I'm into.

I'll go over the major games people associate me with in chronological order

Fire emblem ( Sep 2009): The first video game I played was fire emblem sacred stones on my GBA SP. I don't consider this to be my major introduction into gaming as that would come later but I got into this from my family finding both at a yard sale in the summer of 2009

Monster Hunter (March 2010): I saw my best friend playing Freedom unite at the time on the bus and absolutely was hooked in. To this very day you will not find me away from this franchise.

Pokémon (Also March 2010): Same friend and his brother would play pearl and soul silver on their DS and I bought a copy of both when they went on a mark down sale at the gamestop I was at.

Sonic (May 2010): I got a ps2 with a copy of heros and then my library expanded and now I can say i've played them all by this point haha.

Rhythm games(July 2010): I'm clumping all rhythm games here because my passion for them as a whole started when I saw a DDR supernova2 machine at a chuck e cheese. On my birthday me and my family went to a video store that was going out of business and I found both a DDR and Guitar hero set that totaled $30. My grandfather bought them for me and for the next 11 years I would play until quitting for good this year.

Dark souls(2011): Got ds1 when it came out due to being intrigued by the trailer. My only thoughts are holy shit it's been 10 years.

Well... There's usually 3 main sources to me getting into a series: I grew up with it on the N64 that my mother gave me, my friends recommended it to me, or it was just chance. But I'll be specific:

Kirby: Started with Kirby 64 because it was one of the games I was given my my mother. Loved the idea of having different forms, and mixing and matching them. Went on to play pretty much every Kirby game I could get my hands on.

Super Smash Bros: Same as Kirby. I didnt really play with others until Brawl though. Kept myself pretty entertained though. And if your curious, my mains in each game, it goes as follows, Kirby (64), Marth (Melee), Lucario (Brawl), Lucario/Kirby (Wii U/3DS), Kirby (Ultimate)

Xenoblade Chronicles: So I heard that this was the best JRPG of all time ever back in 2015 from a friend. I didn't look anything up for it, but eventually got it first chance I had, going into it thinking it couldn't possibly be all it was hyped up to be.

Never been so happy to be wrong. I still enjoyed X and 2 but Ive never had an experience quite like Xenoblade 1. Although...

Persona: This came very close. A longtime friend always heavily advocated for these games, to the point where Persona 5 and one other game series (which will show up later on this list) were the sole reasons I purchased a PS4 nearly 2 years ago. It was amazing, and was the first game since Xenoblade Chronicles to make me feel excited to come home and play more every single time I was away from it. Right now I'm going through Persona 3 at a slower pace. Both affirmed that JRPGs/RPGs are my favorite genre.

Kingdom Hearts: The other reason I bought a PS4. I was already a fan because when I was like, 9, I happened to rent KH1 by accident when i meant to rent a different game. Was a great accident though.

Monster Hunter: Got this because friends talked good about it without actually asking me to get it. And now it's my main grinding game. Who needs mobile F2P games when you have this series to keep you occupied for thousands of hours hunting monsters, making weapons and armor, hunting achievements, trying to complete every quest put up... Great games.

Banjo-Kazooie: Same as Kirby. I dont even really mind nuts & bolts. If I were to ever begin speedrunning, these and Kirby would be my go-to games.

Fire Emblem: Also by chance. Also had what a lot of people would call "a rough start", as Radiant Dawn was my first game. Wierdly addictive game but it's a great series if I wanna see how RNG kills off someone I love dear due to my bad luck.

    Also its good.

    Honestly? It's mostly luck.

Take Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights as an example, one of my favourite games of all time. I only came across it randomly as a streamer I accidentally stumbled upon was playing it at the time. From that point forth, it just stuck with me until I gave it a chance - and sure do not regret doing so.

I have tons of games and series that I love and adore so I will pick some of my all time favorites.

Pokémon - I have basically been playing these games since red and blue I remember that I got red and my younger brother got blue. Pretty much played all the main series games (though was prettey late to all the games after Black and White 2) and outside Pokémon conquest have not played anything out side the..... well I take that back I did play the TCG games and recently played Colosseum 1 and 2 on the switch but out side that pretty much only played the main series games

Civilization - Another series I have played since the first one. It was my dad who got me into this series I would watch him playing the first one and finally he let me try it out...... this was also the game that got me hooked on strategy games in general and the reason I have a love for the genre.

Might and Magic - My first CRPG was actully Might & Magic Journey through the isle. And though it's not a series I have played much of in a long time I do have to mention it because this game is what gave me my love for the CRPG genre and all of it's sub genres to follow.

.hack// GU Series - A series I came to very late I did play the first game of the original series. It is bye far one of my favortie ARPG games and one that I love to play I think at this point the only ARPG game I probably like more is Grim Dawn but sadly can not play that one.

Dragon Quest - My first real taste of this was the original release of DQ VIII since then it has been my favorite RPG Series even over Final Fantasy Granted I have not played as many titles in DQ as I have Final Fantasy I still enjoy the games more.

Final Fantasy - The first games of these I played were Mystic quest and Final Fantasy 4 (or 2 back in the day) while I do not like the series as much as I do the DQ series I still love the series especially 1- 7 with 5 probably being my all time favorite. I am also a huge fan FFT and FFTA1 and 2 and give credit to FFT to really giving me a love for Tactical Rpg games.

Stardew Valley - This will be the last game I mention and I mention it because before this game I have to admit I was not a huge fan of cozy type games but since playing this game I have come to appreciate games like this a bit more. I guess I should also mention Terraria as well because without having played that I may not have even considered picking up Stardew in the first place.
So that is a look into some of series and games I like with the first three really being the game series that kind of shaped what I love most. Those genres being Monster Catching, Strategy and CRPG and the various sub genres of all of them.
