I think that the remakes were just a copy and paste except with the addition of new Pokémon, typing, and some added story, but what do I know. What do you think?
I like the remakes because a lot of stuff was smoothed out with the added polish that GF had developed. Take FireRed/LeafGreen for instance; the bugs in RGBY were nearly game-breaking (ever watch a speedrun?) and the pacing was horrible. However, FRLG took what they had learned from making Gold/Silver/Crystal and (especially) Ruby/Sapphire (I don't think Emerald had come out just yet) and applied it to the games that had started it all, and what we ended up getting is a much smoother-flowing game with better balance (Psychics are still strong but nowhere near as powerful as they used to be) and a generally easier time moving through the story while still allowing for free exploration (in a general sense).
Fire red and leaf green just felt like slightly prettier versions of the originals, but hg/ss felt like it added a lot to the original gold and silver games. Oras also felt something like a reskin but all of the added story content felt like it made up for that. That and the megas. I guess my problem with fr/lg was just that there wasn't much new to it. There were the islands, but they didn't really do much until post game. If you talk to one of the game freak employees in hg/ss, he actually mentions the difficulty of keeping a remake similar enough to the original so it doesn't lose the originals spirit, but still making it something new.
FRLG remakes was okay they were better than the original but not a lot is needed to out do them so that's not saying much really, the Sevii Island could have been a fun adventure with extra story but was just kinda there. HGSS is my favorite remakes to date and I'm very happy with what they did with them over all, the Battle Frontier was a nice touch for post-game I spend so much time there. I also really like they added that bit to the story with Ho-Oh/Lugia depending on your version and that they added the Suicune chase from Crystal.
I often find the Pokémon remakes are nothing but improvements over the original games. Game Freak never slacks off with polishing the old content and adding brand new material for everyone to toy around with. Heartgold and Soulsilver are particularly good examples of Game Freak putting 100% into their effort to redesign a classic: things like the battle frontier, integration of mechanics from Pokémon crystal, and general gameplay polish were welcome changes for the series. Not to mention, the games look gorgeous. I've always been an advocate that Heartgold and Soulsilver have the best visual style in the series, and nothing has been able to sway my opnion so far.
I started off with Gen 1 back in the day but good grief... they haven't aged well at all. Gen 2 I missed but I am currently playing Crystal on 3DS VC and I find myself just wanting to replay SoulSilver instead. In my opinion Pokémon really started to take form Gen 3 onwards. I still have a soft spot for the Game Boy games as they got me into the series, but yeah... FireRed/LeafGreen and HeartGold/Soul Silver are definitely better than the originals.
I've never felt disappointed by remakes, and I think that each one is better than its original by an even wider margin than the previous, as if the quality of these games is always rising by an exponential curve. FR/LG was pretty much R/B with Bite being Dark and with just a few Steel additions and the Sevii Islands; HG/SS added postgame functions in the improved safari zone and improved battle tower plus so many available legendaries; OR/AS added depth of storyline, available Pokémon added from later generations (being able to get Gallade and Roserade, contrary to FR/LG where you couldn't get Umbreon/Espeon, Crobat, or several others until postgame). At this rate, I'm anticipating Origin Diamond and Terminus Pearl (pleaseohplease) to be absolutely jaw-dropping. The best Battle Frontier yet? Anime-quality voice acting on an expanded storyline? Some incredible Sinnoh Underground with features I can't even think of? If they keep up this pattern, there's no way I'll be disappointed.
I felt like the only remakes that I was truly excited for was HGSS. Even if I didn't use the Pokewalker, the sheer experience of exploring Johto and Kanto in those graphics were more than worth it. Not to mention experiencing the Battle Fronteir again and the Pokethlon! I feel like there was so much to do that you could hardly get bored of the games, imo. FRLG and ORAS I've... never really cared for all that much. In fact, if it wasn't for me playing FRLG so much with irl friends of mine at the time, I probably wouldn't have even touched it much. :\ the whole mandatory catching Pokémon thing I didn't really care for. I suppose I prefer the originals when it came to these (although I hear that RBY did have the same catching Pokémon requirement which is annoying)
I'm a Gen 3 fanatic so ofc I'm going to say ORAS is my favorite remake. Delta Episodr was godly, and Zinnia's themes even godlier. I do understand why some other soundtracks get flak though. The Elite 4 claps. WHERE ARE THE CLAPS.
I personally think that the remakes are almost always better than the originals due to the amount of time they had to reflect on the originals mistakes and correct them. That's not to say the the remakes are flawless (for example, the removal of the battle frontier in ORAS), but I think that they're better than the originals.
I haven't played any of the remakes, but I want to. They may basically be the same as the original games, but they're updated, and I love seeing what else people can add to games that are already loved and enjoyed.
