When you feel sad, depressed, like all hope is lost or even more simply you are just having a bad day, how do you cope with it? What do you do to distract yourself? I hope I can get some advice/tips. Thank you!

Honestly I smoke pot if I have it and spend the time being high focused on something I enjoy doing, getting immersed in it increased immersion in things is one of the primary effects for me. Most of the time when I get depressed or sad I lose interest in things I like and it helps in finding interest again. Though I know that's not great healthy advice, it's what I do if I have the ability. It helps me if I need a distraction.

Besides that I sleep more than usual, or try to. Go to bed earlier, get a good rest and see how I feel the next day. However sleeping more than usual is considered a possible symptom, so I don't know. Maybe it's not a therapeutic choice as much as it can feel like it is, although I've felt better sleeping on things before. Going for a long walk, a bit strenuous even helps I find. You burn nervous energy and get out into some vitamin D if its a decent day out. Being physically tired gives you something else to focus on. Works for me. Anything you enjoy watching/playing/doing could potentially lend itself to help on the distraction side of coping if you feel you haven't lost interest in those things, although if the cause of the feelings are things you need to take care of and not just things that happened that are making you feel sad you should work on fixing those instead of just distracting. I feel hypocritical saying that a bit cause I have used distraction in place of dealing with things in the past and only partly learned my lesson. Guess it depends on the depth of it.

Then there's also talking with friends, I hear it's a good or even the best support from many people although personally I've had some real mixed results with that.

I play Pokémon. Pokémon always makes me feel better or talking to friends.

i usually focus my energies into something creative, usually off of the computer since being on it can sometimes make you feel worse. doodling in a sketchbook, painting, playing with some clay, its all very therapeutic to me to actually get hands on with some thing i love doing. going for a long walk also helps. i find that just doing something physically and getting my hands dirty is a great help in general

I use music as a way to deal with things. Songs can stimulate different emotions, and when I listen to a song that matches the emotion that I'm having, it somehow makes me feel better. Or I just listen to a song that has a emotion which can relieve me of a current emotion (if i'm feeling angry, i listen to a song filled with no anger at all).

Work and sleep keep your mind off things until you are ready to face whatever it is that makes you sad.

I like this one, though I do that through making signatures. Its like I can, sometimes, just bottle the feeling up.

I also find just time alone to have a walk works well, like Doima said. I also enjoy confiding in some older friends I have, as they seem to know what they're on about. Sitting on your own doing nothing, dwelling on the feeling, is useless. You'll probably overthink things. In the end, its just chemicals that are making you feel that bad. A "bad" thing happens in life, maybe, but you can choose to view the positives.

I read, write, or play games, or watch something funny/inspiring. If it's something really bad, find a friend or family member to talk to

Oh, and something else to consider. If you're 18 or below, you can literally put 90% of the weird or bad feelings you get down to hormones.

Well, to be honest, have had Bipolar since I was 11, so I got pills for that shit. However, when it's really rough, which is more often than not lately, I like to have a shower, lay on my bed and just read. Always found a good sci-fi or fantasy book to be extremely therapeutic. Talking to my parents or sister helps sometimes, or just going to a movie alone, even just going for a late night drive and chain smoking (Don't start this though, just using it as my personal example, which is a terrible habit) lets me, think things through. More often than not I have found what's bothering you deep down can be easily answered if you step back from it for a bit, or recognition that it's very irrational. Really, distract yourself, step back and let it kind of marinate in the back of your head, then talk it out to someone you love or feel comfortable with, it's worked for me for 15 years :)

I talk with my friends via social games. I also sometimes write a short loquacious piece based on the events of the day, usually about whatever got me into a bad mood. I continue to write chapters of my writing serials, or I just take a nap or stare at the ceiling and contemplate life.

If that doesn't work, I get up and go for a walk. You'll be surprised what some fresh air can do for you.

I'm sure that age could be raised by at least a few years.

But yes. Upbeat musics. Sleeping as well because you can wake up the next morning and feel totally fine.

People who want to be younger don't know the absolute hormonial pain we young people go through. :(

When I'm depressed I just like to read about stuff on Wikipedia. Complete random stuff. The other day I read about Kenya, Nairobi seems like a nice city to go to someday. :D

I do many things. I mess with my cat, eat lots of food (working it off afterwards of course), sleep a lot, play Pokémon, do something creative to focus on, watch a funny movie/show, listen to really loud music, or I talk it out with my friends.

I usually just go for a walk, sometimes long ones or sometimes short ones depending on how long it takes my mind. Nine out of ten times that works for me and if it doesn't will just go shower and read a one of my favorite books.

I have a habit of getting on the internet and doing random things. If I have a soda in the house, I drink it. You know how people drink alcohol when they're depressed in movies (and real life)? It feels like the same thing to me. The only reason that is is because my mind is hyperactive when on caffiene, and it comes up with the scariest things I dare to think about. I don't even try to think of it. My brain just does it on it's own. I'm too terrified to think about what made me depressed.

I listen to music or if I'm around friends, I just talk with them about something random.

Really there's a lot of things I can do to calm down. Recently I've discovered tea makes me feel wonderful ^-^ Especially warm camomile. Other than that, I like listening to music quite loudly (especially trance), taking a nap (I always feel better after a nap), reading a book (but only in complete silence or I get too distracted), or even doing yoga. One of my favorite yoga poses that makes me feel great is where you lay flat on your back and put your legs straight up the wall, for about 15 minutes to an hour. It's so nice~ It makes your feet/legs really happy because for once, the blood isn't constantly rushing to them.

I've been to the ER for stress before, so I have kinda been forced to find ways to cope. And that's what I've found so far ^.^

By the way, if I lived close to the beach, I'd go there when I was upset/stressed. I love the ocean ^-^

I usually sleep or use the computer. I used to listen to music but it caused family problems because I could never hear whenever someone called me so I stopped.
