When playing a Pokémon game, how do you decide what your team will consist of? Do you carefully plan everything ahead of time, or do you just go with the flow and add a mon when you see it?
I think I plan in the game. My thing is to have as many different types as possible so I try to have a varied team but I make it on the go.
Ia usually does the following for team: Starter Bird Bug Pokémon that knows Surf (if starter is not Watertype) Strong attacker (usu. Fighting or Psychic) And anything else that Ia likes~
I just keep catching Pokémon until I have a decent team put together. I usually have at least one full box in the PC by the time a playthrough is over.
I catch Pokémon according to the gyms I need to beat so that I have at least one Pokémon that is super-effective against the gym’s main type. I also select Pokémon based on whether or not they are able to learn HMs.
Well sine I mainly do nuzlocke runs I can't freely pick my team most of the time but I tend to pick based on what I think will get me safest through a run based on what I currently have on hand.
I generally just catch what I like, and whenever I encounter a difficult section like a gym leader or another boss, I just hope that I can dig into my box and find something good enough. If not, I'll begrudgingly catch something and, kind of like Leavanny in B2, find out that I enjoy something more than I thought I would. She's on my E4 team now even, only because I needed help against Clay.
I pick Pokémon that I like as long as they don’t have too many overlapping types with my team. I love Malamar, but no way will I use it if I already have a Psychic type.
I usually just make it up as I go along. The Pokémon I pick are typically based on their typing and how much I like them. I like to have a mix of different types that don't share too many weaknesses, but if I find a Pokémon that I especially love, I'll usually try and bend the rest of my team just so I can use it.
When starting a new Generation, I tend to catch as many new Pokémon as I can with my team being picked out from some of my favorites, though typing is a factor. I tend to have at least one each of Water, Fire, Grass and Electric, one that's Ground/Rock/Steel/Fighting and one that's Psychic/Ghost/Dark/Fairy. It varies a lot based off what type combos are available, though. When playing later games in a Generation I tend to avoid catching Pokémon altogether and just use my starter and whatever Pokémon are given to me and/or are unique encounters.
I usually do this with a few self-imposed rules. 1.) No repeating types. If I already have a fire type, I cannot have a second fire type. Doesn't matter how cool the second one is, I've already committed to raising the first. 2.) If it's an in-game team, always have a Fire/Water/Grass core. The other three types can be whatever I want as long as they abide by rule 1. 3.) Only one legend/mythical/UB to a team.
I choose Pokémon based on how much I like their design. I don't care about stats or anything like that since I'm only a casual player.
Typing and design are important for me, everything else like nature and stats are unimportant, because I never do competetive battling in the games (only on Showdown).
I pick my starter, who’s always on my team, then I catch a lot of Pokémon. Then I choose Pokémon I would be fine with using on a team. In Sun I made most of my team early on in the game so my team is Decidueye/ Toucannon/ Snorlax/ Ribombee/ Magnezone/ Slowbro. Unless it’s competitive, natures don’t really matter to me, since most of the Pokémon on my team have natures that are not good for the Pokémon (my Magnezone has naughty)
