When you finally get your new game, how do you go about it? Do you take it slow, spending an hour customizing your character, and another choosing your name, only to then slowly take in your surroundings at a leisurely pace... or are you already at the final boss at that point? We are have different play styles, so share yours in this thread!
I play games pretty casually, and with new games that I've been looking forward to, I tend to play them mostly blind. A recent example is Breath of the Wild. When I first started out, I would usually go straight to the destination marker only to stray off the path because "hey look a shiny!". This happened a lot. It took me over a week to actually beat the last boss.
It depends. If the game has customization options, I tend to take a lot of time there. But most of the time I tend to play very casually. I want to enjoy every moment and I want to explore every part of the game.
I play games to savour them. I don't like going through quickly for the sake of being quick, because then by that time, memories won't really have time to solidify. It's not like I'm on a time limit either when playing, so I am under no pressure to try and get it done ASAP. Obviously I do have a story and whatnot to progress, but I want to explore all of what the game has to offer. Citing a specific example, character customisation is a sort of 'sweet tooth' for me, and it's something I may easily spend a half-hour on, just to make sure I'm satisfied before moving on - even more important when I can't tweak facets about my characters later, which in the case of Dragon Quest IX has come back to bite me (my cleric's hair and eye choice really bothers me; what was I thinking at the time?). Finding ways and incentives to keep me involved will keep me invested for quite a while. The longer a game can last, the more time I'll have to savour it, and therefore the better off I'll be.
Character customisation takes a lot of time for me and I will explore all that I can do with it. Xenoblade Chronicles X gives a huge selection of things to tinker with, and I find that I am spending a lot of time just trying new stuff, doing the side quests, faffing around like mad. So, the final boss just has to wait for a while longer until I am done messing with this bunny, for the 20-thousandth time.
I play games so casually to the point of rarely ever finishing anything with a boss. When I'm really into the game, I get hyped and play for several hours straight. But after that I get bored, leave it, and pick it up again a couple of months later.
I always spend ages on my characters for Dark Souls, the creator is great. Then I spend ages and ages dying to the first boss. Any boss after that is minorly easier. @Eclipse You oughta try Dark Souls. It has Clerics plus you can always change your character's apperance (up to 5 times a cycle) from certain npcs
Dark Souls is a game I will never play for entirely different reasons, the most important being that I don't have any consoles that will play it, and the second-most being that I already get my trial-and-error (and difficulty curve) fix from games like Etrian Odyssey.
i try to play my games the way the devs made them for, but then when I get bored, I just do whatever I want. My brother tries to break the game. (And this has happened before in Wind Waker).
I like to take my time when I'm playing a new game. Exploring can be fun, and I like to analyze bits of the story as I go along. While I love character customization, I end up not spending that much time on it; my Animal Crossing and Pokémon X/Y characters have been wearing the same outfits for a few years in a row now...
I'm going to say this straight up: I'm a completionist. I'm the person that goes out of her way to complete EVERY side quest in the game before beating the final boss. I'm the person who gets all of the armor and weapons possible. I'm the one who completes all the bestiaries, item catalogs, and whatever other catalogs the game has. I will join every guild or side that I can to get their unique items and experience their storyline. (I will get ALL of the Heart Pieces!!!) I'm also a huge item hoarder. I pick up anything and everything, even if I'm told its useless. As such, I am bothered when I have to choose between one good thing or another. (Why can't I pick both the Sail AND the Jaw Fossil?! Why can't I join the Dark Brotherhood, THEN destroy it?!) Despite the aforementioned traits, I play games rather relaxedly. When I sit down with a game, I can play for hours, and it would feel like minutes. When I get a new game, I play it right away for hours. I get so sucked in that I forcefully have to pull myself away.
I like to complete the story mode (especially with shooter kind of games) before diving into multiplayer. This way, I can get a feel for the game mechanics and gameplay before I go embarrass myself in front of everyone. After a while, I'll go back, complete the side objectives, find collectibles and then do another go at the campaign on the hardest difficulty.
