Those of you who write chaptered stories, how many words are your chapters on average? What's the average time you'd say it takes you to write one chapter of this length?
My chapters are usually 5k-7k words, but I’ve peaked at 12k before. It can take me anywhere from a couple hours to months, depending on my motivation levels and whether or not I’m distracted. There was a time where I was able to produce 5k word chapters every day for a week, but that was because I was on break.
Well, I vary a lot actually. My first chapter was about 1k word count, where my latest chapter was about 5k word count. So yeah.
My chapters used to be around two thousand when I started writing, but they've recently been around three to four thousand. I think it's long enough to get some plot and character development in without dragging on for too long or losing the reader's attention. Reason being that I'm very busy IRL and it takes quite a while to write these chapters since I'm almost always distracted >.> It usually takes around three to four hours since I can write around one thousand words per hour if I'm undistracted.
i normally have mine at just over 2k, sometimes 3k. i can do much more than that but i usually limit myself - i don’t want to have too many words in a chapter, because some readers don’t like that >< it depends on how interested i am in the story, though! if i’m really interested, i take a few hours per chapter, but if not, a few weeks heheh
I should really upload some writing on here at some point. Mine tend to be between 5,000 or 8,000, unless it's the first chapter of a book in which case it tends to be shorter unintentionally and I just make it a prologue. I can write that much in a day if I'm feeling motivated and I have the time.
I try to keep them around 10 pages. Even if what I’m writing tends to be a lot longer than 10 pages, like 20 or so, I’ll find a good stopping point and split it into two chapters. The main reason I do this is because of editing. I like proof reading my work three times before posting. That gets to be really annoying when the chapter is longer than 10 pages.
I average around 4000 words but it does very. My first chapters were around 2000 words and my longest chapter was around 8000. It usually take me roughly a week to make a chapter and since I spend 1 hour a day, that's 7 hours for one chapter. Maybe. I haven't written in a month so I'm not sure exactly how long I take.
Used to write chapters roughly 1-2k words long. Now I'm around the range of 8-10k on average. Longest one is 13k. Combined with all the work I have to do and bits of spare time I have to write, it'll take me roughly 1-2 weeks to complete a new chapter for a story.
At first, I started writing at about 1000 to 2000 words per chapter. But the more I imroved the more I wrote. But to be perfectly honest with you, it all depends on your motivation and how you're feeling. My longest chapter was about 7000 to 8000 words.
I don't really aim for a word count, nor do I plan to. When I write a 'chapter', I have the entirety of the chapter describe one event, and all that goes on while that event is happening. When that event is reasonably over, I conclude the chapter and move on to the next one, describing a different event. The same event never happens twice, so I don't need to worry about reruns. It's whatever helps forward the story, generally. My average for that used to be 2500 words, several years ago. Now? I don't know, though I don't think it would be much different than that. I don't count, though, nor do I really need to. If an event is short, then so it goes; if an event takes a long time, then so it goes. Words are not the milestones of my chapters, and I don't believe they should be such for anybody's.
A few weeks after I started writing Four Journeys I noticed that all but one of my chapters up to that had been at least 1400 words, so I decided to set that as my minimum word count per chapter. Of the two non-Pokémon stories I have on FF.net so far, one also uses 1400 as its minimum while the other has a 2000 word minimum per chapter. They're pretty short chapters overall, but I'm still just kind of starting out and in the case of Four Journeys its the only was I can keep up with my self imposed release schedule.
Yeah see, I can't answer in word amount. I use Google Docs, and from what I can tell, word amount isn't really a thing. Plus, I average based on PAGE amount instead. On that note, I average about 20 pages per chapter. My longest chapter was 31 pages.
I average around 3-5k for my chapter stories, depending if it is a true chapter story, or a one-shot story (told in multiple "one shots")
