    Hey everyone,

I was wondering, how many generations will come? I mean, we have to face it, they can't keep creating new Pokémon forever! But Pokémon seems such a timeless thing, and it would be a terrible thing if they decided to stop making new games. But what else could they do?

From a business side of things, Pokémon is extremely lucrative, it's one of the biggest game franchises in the world. The incentive is there to keep it going for as long as possible. I can't see it ending any time soon, I think they'll keep making new ones, and if they get a little stuck they have new evolutions to think about. There's always a few years in between games and generations to come up with the next too, there's not a great time shortage to come up with new ideas. I wouldn't be surprised if there are people on the team who are tasked with always coming up with ideas, all year around. Pokmon is here to stay.

True. Maybe at some point, they will just make a new generation, but without any new Pokémon. Instead, those games could be focused on the other aspects, like storyline and graphics. Like HG/SS did with the walking Pokémon, it was a one-time thing.
And indeed, if they're out of new Pokémon ideas, there are always (pre)evolutions, like they did in gen IV.

*however, there are 721 Pokémon, and still no Dolphin Pokémon*

Pokémon is just one of those things that I don't see dying/ending so easily. Pokémon has a built years of reputation and continues to flourish. They can continue to add as many Pokémon/expand the Pokémon world as they want; it's pretty endless.

I don't see them running out of ideas for new Pokémon. They have to hire new people for the design team eventually.

IT WILL STAY TILL THE END OF TIME!!!

Well, not really, but pretty damn long, for sure. It survived this long, what's another 10 years? It's just one of those things that you don't really think about ending so abruptly.

I think one day they might turn to taking fan ideas. There is quite a lot of awesome potential in fan-made things and if circumstances call for it, they might spend a bit of money copyrighting those ideas for the actual game. Although I think any fan would be flattered just to have their idea made real.

It's very possible, although I think they'd go the route they went before with Draco Meteor, maybe tweaked a bit. A contest was held to name the strongest dragon type move and Draco Meteor won. I could see them holding more contests of this nature if they are going to go the fan idea route. It deals with the copyright and royalty situation because before entering there would be clear terms of ownership that must be agreed to before an idea is submitted and eligible.

Doima is completely right. Pokémon nets in way too much money to be out down at some point. If the company ever runs out of ideas (which I highly doubt) they might resort to doing remakes of the past generations and whatnot. It seems highly unlikely, but there is still a possibility. I just wouldn't want to franchise to digress so much that it doesn't even look like Pokémon anymore. I mean, when I played B&W for the first time, I thought the storyline was great.. but the rest was just horrible, alongside B&W 2. Pokémon X&Y instead was amazing all around except for the storyline, which I found weak and emotionless from my perspective. The whole Floette thing was just dumb.
