I'm curious as to how long the writers here on LV spend thinking about their works? I personally spend a good 90% of my free time and 50% of work time thinking about the myriad of stories in my mind. This isn't an exaggeration, I've often gotten yelled at in school for daydreaming and frequently walk around in circles to think in my free time for hours on end.
I brainstorm often. I can't work without a plan and the brainstorming helps a lot. But I never got into trouble over it.
The better question is when am I not brainstorming a story. I toy with ideas so much but rarely ever put them down on paper or into any sort of document. It's more fun for me to brainstorm than it is to actually write a story.
I brainstorm whenever I can. I used to daydream about my stories all day, barely wasting a single second of class time to think about my stories. But since the difficulty spike of college, this has become a less frequent occurrence. Now I only brainstorm in the hours between classes if don't have homework or in classes where lecture is easy and I don't really need to pay attention. I also brainstorm when I sit down to write, but that is just two hour a week.
Hmm... When I am not actively planning to progress on my current stories, not very often. Only when I get bored, and have nothing else to do, and an idea happens to strike me. When I am really passionate about a current work though, i end up spending most of my free time at least partially thinking of ideas or cementing others in my mind.
I brainstorm but I dont usually write anything, I just think about it all like a brainstorm and keep the key ideas.
I brainstorm pretty much all the time. But when it comes down to actually working on my comics, organizing them all into a cohesive story and taking in what to use and what not to use still takes time. It is a blessing and a curse.
You have no idea how much I relate to this, lol. I brainstorm pretty much all day, but I rarely put anything on paper, not just because it's more fun to brainstorm, but also because I have so many ideas that taking the time to type them all out would only cause me to lose interest. After all, I can let the images play in my head like a movie very easily, but to have to type out everything that happens... I'm afraid I don't have the attention span for that, lol. I'd rather enjoy watching the fun in my head than type it out slowly and carefully.
I cannot brainstorm ever, due to how my brain works when processing ideas. Either the ideas come to me, or they don't. Granted, they don't come out of nowhere - the idea for such has to be on my mind in some fashion, or I refer back to it in some way - but trying to force thoughts simply does not work. I've tried, and the resulting ideas are standardly weaker than whatever ideas came to mind while not thinking too intensely about it. These ideas usually come to me right as I'm trying to go to sleep - which means I have to hold on to them until morning to do anything with them. This isn't just stories; this is basically anything in general where substantial thought is required (except for maybe assignments i had to do at university, in which quick and immediate thinking is basically required - but those aren't things for myself anyway, so those are an exception). This method has worked for me thus far, so there is not much incentive to change how I cause ideas to come to me.
I brainstorm when I write and get stuck on something, or when I have the motivation to do something but don't know what to do.
I like to brainstorm whenever I happen to get hit with a little wave of inspiration. But that in itself just tends to happen whenever, so not terribly often, but not very rarely, either?
Usually ideas come to me over a period of time. I usually brainstorm for years and never write anything. At least, that's how it goes for my original works. With one of my stories, I've hardly been able to write anything because when I do, my idea for it changes almost completely. By now, it barely resembles the first draft.
I less brainstorm and more just let it happen. I usually like to be brainstorming characters more than I like to brainstorm actual stories.
I brainstorm when I have moments of peace. This is usually when I'm showering, when I'm about to go to bed, when I'm eating, and when I'm mindlessly grinding for shinies or levels. Sometimes, I purposefully sit down and have a brainstorming session. I clear my mind and mull over what I've written and where I want to go, and I write down what comes to mind. I scratch a lot of ideas, but I also come up with some of my best story ideas in these sessions. (I actually just finished one.) Very rarely does a plot idea just pop in my mind. I have to be thinking about the subject for a while before any decent idea comes to mind. Although, I have gotten some brilliant ideas in the shower.
For me, during little resting moments, like after lunch or breakfast, I would just take my clipboard of recycled paper and start doodling~ If I find a character design interesting, I keep drawing them and then I think of their story~ Otherwise, I would daydream pretty often when I'm alone.
