An interesting discussion I thought I'd introduce here. Really interested in what you guys think!

Right now, as we know, (most) Pokémon speak by saying their name. How do you feel about this? Do you think Pokémon should be able to speak in words, or maybe even make more natural animal sounds? How would you prefer Pokémon sound?

They should speak like how normal animals speak unless they are like Mewtwo and othe legendaries that are given the ability to speak like a person or telepathically communicate.

When I write how Pokémon speak I say they make an animal sound. Like when I try to make my OC’s Croconaw ‘talk’ I say he hisses since his real world counterpart does as well.

I believe they should just make noises like actual animals do. Also I believe that they should show more animals in the anime, they do make references to them existing.

I don’t know about that. The anime is already confusing as it is. Throwing real animals into the mix is just gonna raise more questions...

I prefer animal sounds. For some of the manmade ones, maybe beeps and electrical sounds.

I'm fine with Pokémon saying their names in the anime, but I fell like that's something that should stay in the anime. Otherwise, Pokémon should stick to animal sounds and other noises.

I like them saying their own names. I really like the way it sounds, plus it makes it easier to name them.

I’d prefer normal animal sounds, as it would be more realistic that way.

My theory is their lańgŭāĝe is actŭally telepathic and them sāyińg their nāmes/roaring/etc is just activātion of their telepathic spēēçh, whīle the psychic Pokémon can also māke hūmans hēar and understand their telepathic lańgŭāĝe~

Besīdes that, Įa thińks spēakińg an oral and sensible lańgŭāĝe is better (ēven if not Ēńglişh)

If all Pokémon could speak full articulate language, that would make things confusing. That implies they're of human-level intellect, which makes the master-fighter relationship that much more confusing. I'm not prepared to toe that line.

I prefer animal sounds that resemble their name, but not spoken fully articulately. Like any time Pi-ka-chu pronounces each syllable of its name fully, it just seems weird. But a Mawile who uses vocables that resemble "maw" and "wahl"? That seems good to me. Like a compromise between canon anime and logical biology.

Animal sounds. It just makes more sense than them saying their names… besides, why would there be different names depending on the language?
I'm also not a fan of how their decided to keep old sounding cries for the first gen… it just sounds bad.
I've seen headcanons of how Pokémon would make each their own sounds, but can understand each other thanks to auras/sort of telepathic powers – humans like N would be able to understand them thanks to having the same power, or others where humans are able to understand them when they truly love them. Honestly? All these are great!

Originally, Pokémon were ment to have kaiju like roars so they would be recogniced through their related sound effect, and that is really cool. On the other hand, the anime made them say their name in a stupid fashion so childs would learn their names and, obviously, it also meant less work for the animation team!

Animal sounds is my choice here for obvious reasons. A shame that the ominous presence of the anime in the actual games is steadily increasing with each generation :(
