Programs. They tend to go through different builds and versions within the space of a few years or more. Depending on what the particular software is, and, of course, who is developing it, new versions can come every few months to annual releases and beyond.

Do you like to get the latest version of a program that you use? How about that android app you've got pinned to your home screen that Google seems adamant that you update constantly?

Of course, there are numerous reasons behind getting the latest build of a program or app, bug fixes and security patches being chief among them. Still, what is your preference?

One of the apps that I always update on my phone is Kik, without failure. Also the Chrome app, Spotify, YouTube, and a few other ones.
In reality, I update all of my ends sooner or later, but I tend to give those priority over others.

One app that I have not even thought about updating is Facebook Messenger.
Ever since it got changed to the current design about 2 years ago, I have not updated it whatsoever, nor do I plan to.
Yes, that is correct. I haven't updated the app in about 2 years. I'm stubborn as hell with it because I absolutely hate the design so much that it almost makes me angry. It looks NOTHING like Facebook.
    But I'm getting off-track here..

Something on my computer that I always udpate is Skype, Spotify, Notepad++, and Firefox. 4 of my essentials that I use almost daily.

I don't really need the newest version, but I get it anyways because they are usually for the better. Bug fixes are what really makes an update after all. I think the only thing that doesn't update is the few apps I don't even use. But, that's just me personally.

I can't stand doing this. If I can get away with an older version that works just as well - and with an interface that is just as good or better - I'll stick with that.
The only thing I've ever been forced to update in this manner is my Nintendo 3DS firmware to connect to the eShop and/or to view DLC for games I own. If I didn't have to do that, then I wouldn't.

Cost is also a big factor for me, in addition to practicality. I use Windows XP still and it works just fine; why would I need to purchase a newer version of the operating system that doesn't change very much, involves a whole new learning curve, and might actually be counter-productive? Hell, the only reason I don't still use Windows 98 is because it doesn't have very good USB support.

The list goes on. I don't know why I feel so strongly about things like this, but I do.

Oh, and usually if I wait a while, I can pick up that 'newer version' when it becomes older, for a greatly reduced cost. No functionality is lost and I save a lot of money in the process.

heh, when I was choosing a laptop, I thought in my mind "Windows 10 pls"
Otherwise, I dont need latest versions, as I use old apps on my phone once.

One program that I will never update is Skype. In fact, I recently downgraded to an older version. Newer versions of Skype are rather buggy. I downgraded once it stopped working completely with regard to group chats. It wouldn't send or receive messages from groups so I went ahead and got myself Skype 6.21. Works like a charm now. xD

Other than that, I rarely update programs and apps unless the newer version has a noticeable upper hand. "Better stability" and a new colour for buttons don't count. xD

I don't ever really feel like I need the latest version of a program. Usually newer versions have better performance and bug fixes, so I'll generally update, but if I hear the update is bad then I won't be torn up about staying on a not-fully-updated version.

Though if it gets to the point that support for my version stops, I'll generally update then. Support is pretty darn important.

I've never really felt an overwhelming drive or need to have the latest version of something unless necessary for said something to work (Like Eclipse's mentioning of the 3DS Eshop requiring updating to work). In fact in some cases I would prefer older versions (exhibit A: Skype on mobile has turned more and more to crap with updates. Can I please just have my actually decent original version back?)

In general it's more a lack of care though. If a new version doesn't really add much I'm not going to go out of my way to download version 1.2.3.4 or whatever unless it adds something I deem important to myself. For example if Skype (the butt of attacks apparently) got an update to which its interface was made sleeker, I wouldn't fork out my time to get what is essentially a texture pack for Skype. Now, if the update was, say, returning the ability to see notifications mid-convo on mobile version (and I direly want this) I'd make sure to have that cause I consider that important in terms of the program.

But ultimately, I generally am not one to care much more than I need to.

Personally, I tend to update my apps in the phone, because usually it will have new features, bug fixes and all. Sometimes I do get cautious when updating, though, because sometimes new updates might become not good at all (I'm looking at you, Windows 10).

I'm actually anti-update a lot of the time, at least when user interfaces get changed up. You're looking for a setting or menu and it's not where you want it any more, that kind of thing. Otherwise, new features I don't want or need are added. For example, I used to use VMWare for testing/learning Linux builds, and it was great for a while. And then updates started adding unnecessary machine options, and unnecessary security protocols, and the need to sign up for their service with an email address. I think they're on version 12 now, but I have 7 installed, and lately I'm trying VirtualBox instead.

Other than that, I like to remain up-to-date with bugfixes and securty. It's UI changes kill it for me, and unnecessary filesize. LibreOffice has 5 out now, but I'm on 4 because the upgrade takes up nearly an entire day's data limit for me. Sorry, I can't do that, so I'm sticking with 4.

I only update the programs I use, such as games I play and things like Gmail and Firefox. I have an Android phone, which means there's a whole lot of apps installed on my phone I never use. I have decided to set my updates to "manual" to prevent those apps from updating (thus taking in more space). I don't mind apps updating, but I do mind apps updating their entire design and controls every eight months. I mean, the old thing was working just fine, so why change it?
