    When doing digital art, you attend to see some options on how you should save it as:

    JPEG = Joint Photographic Experts Group
    PNG = Portable Network Graphics
    GIF = Graphics Interchange Format
    BMP = Bitmap

    Which of these types do you use the most? When finished, do you change the type or keep the file type the way it is?

    I mostly attend to save my pictures as PNG. There are times that I have not finished my pictures due to other events I need to attend to or urgent business in real life. If I save my unfinished picture as a JPEG, all of my work will be smudged together with the part I didn't have done and ruin my work especially since I use Microsoft Paint for all of my work. :s For GIF, some of the colors that I used will be taken off of the picture to take away what the characters' appearances are. By saving it to PNG, it will save all of my work and help me work better on my unfinished picture. Once I finished it, I'd often save it as a JPEG, or keep it as a PNG. :sweat:

    As somebody who typically uses GIMP when they make pictures, the default set is PNG, so I export everything in PNG, so all the files I upload to the internet ever are PNG files. Occasionally, for no reason, I will export my files as JPEG, as it is typically as compatible as other files. I have never used GIF files for my own work, as far as I'm aware, and I see no purpose, as I haven't animated anything and don't know the other purposes of GIMP files (and I don't know if I'll ever take the time to learn. Also, nobody needs to tell me what they're for other than animation, if they are for other things, I'm good.)

    I usually keep all my files PNG for the same reason - it keeps my work the way it was supposed to be and makes it easier to continue it later. Sometimes I'll save a finished work as JPEG but that's usually an accident =w='

    Really depends on what I'm going to use the picture for.

    If I'm going to post a photograph on the internet, then JPG is the best way to go because it has a smaller file size.

    But if it's something I drew on a computer, then PNG would be better because it produces a much sharper image than JPG.

    I use PNG because I think it looks best. I use Pixlr Editor for my pixel art (a website, not a downloaded program) and that tends to save as a JPEG, but because PNG can be transparent, I always use that.

    I avoid using anything beside .PNG when I can. I hate JPEG for some reason, never really known why. Beside for animation, I never use GIFs for obvious reasons (goodbye, quality).

    I usually tend to save most of my works in .PNG & .JPEG. But if I have to, I will use a converter on-line to change vice versa.

    Jk, I use .png mostly. Especially since Inkscape can't export as any other kind of file (other than .svg).
    If I want to animate something, I'll usually save as png first, then combine the images into one gif file.

    OK OK OK GUYS I NEED TO SPILL THIS OUT HERE RIGHT NOW.

    NEVER. NEVER EVER SAVE SOMETHING AS JPEG UNLESS YOU PLAN TO PRINT IT OUT. Jpeg is awful on pictures you post on the internet. It lessens quality and also nulls the transparency setting present on a photo. It only raises quality if it is on something printed!! That goes for art you do too, always save as PNG unless you plan to sell such as a print.

    Only save as GIF if it is a file you really REALLY want to compress or if it's a moving image. BMP is acceptable however, you should save this for programs that desire a file as such (such as MMD or other 3D modeling programs).

    I hope this has been helpful!!

    I pretty much only save my artwork that I create as a PNG after it's done, the only reason I would save anything as a JPG is if I was going to print a huge file or something like that. PNG is just better for quality when posting artwork on the internet anyway, the colors and lines are much smoother. I also use GIF when saving animations, but that's about the only thing I use the GIF file format for.

    On MMD we have to use BMP or TGA, but we can also use PNG. When I Draw I save it to PNG because it's very Clear.

    PNG. I'm not sure why I'd ever use JPEG honestly, it's very unappealing to me. And BMP? Why. </3

    I mostly use PNG, since I 99% of the time post my work online. Saving it in any other format doesn't even come up in my mind anymore :p

    As everyone else, I also use .png for basically every image I use. The only time I've used .jpeg is for a class project or when a site has a small avatar kb size, in which i save a copy of .png and .jpg for it.

    Silly Wizard; the default setting on GIMP is .xcf. Then again, that's the original layered file so it's not actually a picture, but you get the idea.

    My banners are standardly (if not almost always) .png files. On occasion they have been known to be .jpg, but only if the original render I used is already a .jpg with a quality setting of 95 or higher. (The default is 85.) With banners like mine it isn't always an issue as the file is small enough, but even large .jpg files with quality 100 can have grain issues with them - however, due to how I work with them, that hasn't been an issue. Less than 5% of the banners I use and make are .jpg as files with that high of a quality index are nearly impossible to find. Every other time, it is saved as a .png.

    I can't use .gif files for anything, as the different colour index makes working with them extremely problematic (I have to essentially resave the file as a .png before working on it), even worse than .jpg. I tend to save the .xcf files for my banners for a few months after I make them, but every so often I'll go through and delete the ones I no longer have need of.

    Oops, I meant the default "export" setting, probably should've specified earlier. I don't think I actually ever save my pictures under the .xcf setting because it's not really compatible with anything.

    That's interesting, I honestly never expected gimp to save files as .xcf. Of course, I've never used it. Is that like gimp's version of saving something as like a PSD, so you can edit it later? @[member="Eclipse"]

    Yeah, that's exactly what it is. The .xcf extension is the equivalent of the .psd (with all the layers intact), and is what GIMP defaults to if a file extension is not specified. I am fairly sure that GIMP can save in .psd as well; however, I'm assuming that within GIMP itself the .xcf works better.
