Assuming you have these differing number-typing methods when you use your computer, how do you usually type in numbers? The number bar on top of the letters, outlined in red, or the number pad that's off to the side of the keyboard, outlined in green? Or maybe how you type is different. Let us know!

I use the number pad. It's faster and easier to use once you get the hang of it.

Although the pad is quicker and a lot more useful, I still have the habit of using the bar... Breaking this habit is hard.

My keyboard doesn't have a number pad, so I use the number bar. Even if it does have a number pad, I still prefer using the bar because I've always done so.

I find the pad is useful because you can easily reach all numbers with minimal hand movement. I can type in huge sequences of numbers accurately without looking at my hand. The topbar, not so much. I just wish that the numberpad had a TAB button on it. Spreadsheets don't often behave the way I like them to with Enter.

Has anyone noticed that telephone numberpads and computer numberpads are arranged opposite? Phones have 123 at the top, but computers have 123 at the bottom. I really hated that when I worked retail, and I was always on and off the phone delegating while simultaneously typing in 12-digit UPCs. Easy to trip over one's own fingers that way.

I always use the bar. It's a lot easier for me considering I've switched through so many different computers without a number pad, that the bar is one of the more useful ones to use especially considering I usually reach it for my basic symbols such as &. It's not to hard to use, but the pad is usually too far to reach for my tiny hands and arms, so the bar is my best option.

I will use the bar to type. When trying to switch between typing letters and numbers, the bar is actually essential - the pad is absolutely worthless in that regard. I will use the pad under only two circumstances: if I am typing at least five numbers at a time consecutively (though, even then, it is not a guarantee); or if I am using Alt codes to enter characters (simply because Alt codes do not work if using the number bar).

I type very fast and really cannot afford to slow down very much, so I keep myself primarily confined to the bar whenever possible.

My laptop doesn't have the number pad and I've never used it in my life despite it being there on most past computers.. so number bar is totally my thing. Can see why the pad would be more useful to certain people but it's not my thing and I'm never really in a rush to type things out. It also doesn't seem very left-handed people friendly.

I don't have the side thing anymore, but on my old computers I never, ever used the side. I'm not sure why but I guess I never really needed to back then. Never did at school either as far as I can remember.

Certain laptops have a number pad amongst the letters by turning on Number Lock, and from there typing the appropriate keys will result in the numbers. (Usually, the numbers 7 through 9 remain on those keys, and the others on the letters below them. For example, the letter K becomes 2.) However, switching back to the letters again requires turning Number Lock off again, so unless you are typing numbers exclusively, on a laptop it is much more trouble than it's worth.

However, I have noticed that Alt-codes only work with the number pad, not with the number bar. (Alt-codes are how you can draw interesting figures and whatnot, and the codes for such you can find in Character Map; for example, Alt+0241 produces ñ.) But I suppose that just becomes a double-edged sword in that case.

I am not saying that your laptop is like that (I said 'certain' do), but if yours does, it is an option, though I'd only recommend it if you're typing numbers exclusively for prolonged periods of time.
