I've recently started trying to learn some Irish since being part Irish and all it made sense to get in touch with my roots a little. Have you ever tried learning another language? (School taught languages like Japanese and whatever else you can be taught count) Do you still remember any? I'm still pretty basic but I can say: Is cait iad (They are cats) Itheann na lucha úlla (The mice eat the apples) And a few other ones I'm too lazy to write. For some reason the thing teaching me loves to focus on animals...
I’m learning German and Dutch~! And if there is anyone in this server who is Dutch, please let it be known!
Dia dhuit! . . . That's all the Irish I remember lol. I've always really loved Ireland, for a number of reasons, since I was very young. About three years ago, all my begging finally paid off, and I took six months of Irish classes. I learned nothing. I took Spanish for four years - last year of elementary and three years of middle school - and absolutely hated it, not so much because of the language itself as the teachers, who were all terrible in various ways. Still, I don't take it anymore. I know enough Spanish to format plenty of sentences, but not enough to get by at all in any Spanish-speaking country. Now I'm taking Latin! I don't speak much as of right now but I'm doing better with it than I have with any other language. I'm really enjoying it and I feel motivated to memorize vocabulary, which I haven't before. Edit: Oh and I . . . speak English too. Is my native language. That counts!
Spanish, German, Japanese, Chinese, Greek, and French. I've tried to learn a large amount of languages, but I can only remember some basic Spanish. The rest of these I looked at for a while, but eventually gave up on since the massive differences caused an overload that I still have yet to get over right now. While I'd love to learn them, it'd take too long, and I really only need English to do what I want. So, while I could probably go back and learn them properly, it's unlikely.
English is my first language, kindergarten to 8th grade I learned Spanish and I disliked it. I’m taking French and I like learning it (but not so much the tests and stuff). I want to learn Japanese and Hawaiian someday.
I speak English (My name is WavePearl)--mother tongue Spanish (Me llamo WavePearl)--studied for five years; can read and translate a fair bit, but still need a dictionary a little Japanese (Watashi wa WavePearl desu)--gleaned from watching anime a little Irish Gaelic (WavePearl is ainm dom)--studied a little on Duolingo; hope to learn more so I can translate all those Gaelic songs on my Celtic music collection. a little French (Je m'appelle WavePearl)--studied a little on Duolingo a little Italian (Mi chiamo WavePearl)--gleaned from Italian dubs of anime, musical terminology and lessons on Duolingo
I have still have trouble reading my first language and thus have no interest in trying to read other languages. Since that's the case, I've studied American sign language. I have several years of study and I still remember a lot of it today. I practice my finger spelling on a daily basis. Although I'm not actively involved, I do enjoy the culture of ASL as everyone seems so welcoming and fun to be around.
I took Spanish in high school, but can only really read it. I can understand spoken simple sentences, but as I have trouble speaking English, I can't pronounce any words right. I learned German as a little kid thanks to a classmates mom, but with no one around to speak it with I can only really speak it. Russian is a language I'm slowly getting into. One of my favorite customers is this little Russian lady that doesn't speak English but would stand by my side, pat my shoulder and talk to me in Russian. Her husband would say that she is saying I'm doing good, I'm pretty, I'm so nice, and so on with all these sweet compliments. Plus my best friend speaks Russian so it feels like an obligation lol.
Where I live, French classes are mandatory from elementary school to highschool. I was really into learning it, and I made good marks. But when I switched schools, the teacher I got was awful to me and belittled me all the time, so I just went "meh" and gave up.
Chinese is my first language, Cantonese, specifically, although I’m more fluent in English for whatever reasons. I remembered learning Japanese when I was very young, by young I mean when I was 3 years old. Our school offers French and Spanish, although I didn’t take them, as I don’t plan to study in France or Spain(or any country that speaks those languages). Also, countless people have told me there are a lot of assessments.
Wow, everyone's learning so many languages! Hm...yeah. Wow Greek? I'm part greek and have tried learning it so I know what my auntie is saying but it never sticks. I know a little japanese since I'm always translating songs. You're Duolingo? So am I. This is how I'm learning. Yes, much Japanese is gleaned from anime. I'm in that boat. You watch Italian dubs of anime? Huh, maybe I'll try that sometime. Yeah, so far Irish is the only thing I've felt really capable of learning. I've tried others and failed. So...here we go again!
Native languages: Tagalog (Maligayang Pasko, mga Noypi! Kumusta na kayo? Meron ba kayang ibang Pilipino sa pook-sapot na ito? Parang wala ata, heheh...) English (I am not about to repeat what I said above.) Learned the basics: Russian (Здравствуйте! Я знаю что я ево не буду говорить ещё раз.) Esperanto (Bonan nokton! Mi estas Jupjamio, kaj jes, mia nomo estas prononcis kun la letero 'j'. Nun gxis la revido!) Korean (내가 알라지 않다 무엇 내가 말해요...) Ilocano (Anya ti bagakon ittoy? Madim hehehe...) Tried to learn a little: Nahuatl (Nimitzitta... ) Japanese (こんにちは! 私わ ユプヤミです。) Irish (Ta sé uisce agus úll.) PS: Duolingo FTW!
As a Puerto Rican, my native tongue is Spanish. I learned English by studying in a bilingual school and cartoons. Yeah... there's nothing much else I know. Oh well.
@Momo Kisaragi Easy and fun way to learn a language is watch something in that language. Most Italian anime songs blow the English version out of the water.
I see. Also, you wrote Momo which is another person. I'm Momo Kisaragi. I know tiny difference but that other person is gonna be pretty confused.
I've been learning Spanish, Italian and French. I'm nowhere near fluent, especially when it comes to speaking it, but I can read, write, and think decently enough in these languages.
I tried to learn Japanese language once, and I did memorize some alphabets. But, not anymore. Tho, I can actually speak some words. Like, Arigatho Gozaimasu. (Thank you very much) (I think) Konbanwa. (Good evening) Ohayo gozaimasu. (Good morning.) Oyasuminasai. (Good night.) Gommennasai (sorry) And maybe some more which Idr at the moment. I can speak Gujarati & Hindi. And, English, well...I dont need to mention it... ♡
i speak fluent russian and english, though russian can be a bit rusty with more difficult words Would love to continue learning French! Took three semesters in college but could never retain it since I had no way to immerse myself. Japanese is also very interesting, as is Korean......but I'll probably never actually learn enough to hold conversations since I am so busy. one can dream!
I learned several languages in school until I started to realize they aren't worth the effort to me. Out of all the second+ languages I've learned, I've only had one instance in which I wish I still knew Sign Language. On that note: American Sign Language: I used to be quite fluent. Spanish: I recognize some words spoken or written. French: I can mostly comprehend written French, but not spoken. Latin: I mostly understand it written or spoken, and can speak it somewhat with poor grammar. Greek, Swedish, Japanese, some particular dialect of Chinese: I know a few vocabulary words or the alphabet/construction, but by no means do I understand the language. If I do try to learn another language fully at this point, I'll probably either try French or Arabic, since they're both very widely useful but aren't as hard as most Chinese dialects.
