Lavender Town is a Pokémon town known for controversy and creepypasta. It's strange cemetery dialogue and high-pitched music in the original games sets it apart from other cities and towns in the Pokémon world. Here you can discuss various theories and rumours surrounding the Kanto town.

What is your opinion on the fabled "Lavender Town Syndrome"? Did you ever experience abnormal effects after listening to the music? Let us know in the comments below what your opinion is on this extraordinary little town.

Well Lavender Syndrome is something i don't believe at all. I've been playing mah blue in lavender just to hear the music town. It never affected at me at all but it did affect my brother some how. He said that the town is for the dead when he heard the song. He was scared of the game ever since but i told him to calm down. You just tired. It was 11:00PM after all.

I actually really love the soundtrack, it's one of my favorites! It's got the dark and sad tone to it, which blends in perfectly with the environment. I don't think there's anything wrong with it :)

I think it's no surprise that a place as different as Lavender Town gets all these creepypastas. Although none of them are true xD

I think a lot of the effects are just the person making it up in their mind and believing it, and that game isn't really that creepy, the only thing it has going for it is that it makes a kids game look dark.

Lavender Town Syndrome is just a creepypasta. I think it's a rather interesting town, and it's certainly not surprising that such a pasta was written about it, but it's just a story.

I've updated the opening post with the tune for those who haven't heard it before. It's strange that children would commit suicide because of this tune. I've never heard about music with unusually high-pitched tones triggering people to act in a rash way. The tune is repetitive and its possible that the frequency of the tune causes the brain to react badly to it. Whilst writing this I feel a small headache coming along but there's a scientific reason to explain why the tune triggers these things and people on the internet certainly do like to create rumors such as the creepypasta surrounding Lavender Town for brief period of fame and popularity.

Is no one going to mention Buried Alive?
In the original Red and Blue games, if you used a Poke Doll on the Marowak ghost (before you have the Silph Scope), you could bypass it and advance. Once you reached the top floor of the tower, you're greeted by text: "You're... Here. I'm trapped... And I'm lonely... So very lonely... Won't you join me?" The battle then initiates. Buried Alive has 4 Pokémon: a level 94 Muk, a level 90 Gengar, and two level 101 White Hands, a unique "Pokémon" that can't be acquired at all. There is no script for what happens after (if) you defeat him, but if you loose, Buried Alive says "Yes... Fresh meat!" followed by symbols. An image of your character being eaten by Buried Alive appears, with the text "GAME OVER" underneath. All save data is deleted at this point.
In the updated versions of the game, Buried Alive was removed.

I remember how scared I was when I found out about this. It took me hours to decide whether I should listen to it or not, then when I finally decided to listen to it, it was just mehh. Why did I even waste that much time to listen to it xD

Because it never happened. Children killing themselves because of the music is part of the Lavender Town Syndrome creepypasta. But yes, there is an explanation for possible headaches. The binaural beats - which were removed in the final releases of the game (the details are a bit hazy but generally it's said they were removed before the American release). Here's the wikipedia page for binaural beats. It has a great example on the side, about 10 seconds long. Listen with headphones in both ears, then take one out and you'll hear the difference. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binaural_beats

The creepypasta never really creeped me out to be honest, it was a fun idea but I like a lot of the other ones better. I guess I enjoy more simple speculation rather than creepy stuff, haha.

It's interesting because of all these crazy theories everyone has built around Lavender Town they may not be true but it's fun controversy. And I don't think this "Syndrome" is true either, but I did find a sound track somewhere a while back of the original tune of Lavender Town and I will admit I got a pretty bad headache, but nothing medicine couldn't fix.

As for "Buried Alive" that one was a little disturbing, but I can't help but feel it's just to add to creepy pasta scares, even if it's origin is a little bit muddled...

Like I mentioned earlier, there is a reason as to why you got a headache. The binaural beats found in the original music will give some people headaches. (:

It's ironic how the Wikipedia page you posted yesterday had a section where it explained how binaural beats can be used (by professionals obviously) for relaxation, meditation and calming effects. I couldn't listen to the audio example for more than 2 seconds. Still interesting to know that Pokémon included said beats into a tune for the game. Although why is a different question. Possibly the audio on the original Game Boy couldn't handle lower frequency tunes?

I've wondered that as well. Perhaps it was added for the rather unsettling sound effect, but removed if/when people complained about the headaches? Who knows!
