There are currently 18 Pokémon types. That's a lot. That begs the question, do we need all of these types? Which Pokémon type do you think is the least important?

This is a hard question for me, but I'm tempted to lean towards the dark type. I know that dark and ghost are different, but I feel the dark type is a little unnecessary. It is super effective against the same types as ghost. Another one I'm leaning towards is the bug type. Many of those Pokémon could be directed towards Poison, Flying, Dark, etc. Also, the Poison type. It is an almost useless type prior to Generation 6, imo. Bugs can be venomous, and there are other ways to express poison. These are just opinions of mine.

    What are your thoughts?

probably ground to be honest. Rock is way too similar and they could probably just add the weaknesses and resistances ground has to rock.

I think maybe normal type wouldn't be as necessary. No strengths, one weakness, many types with resistances. It may hold some of the cuter Pokémon, but it's not as necessary as the others in my opinion.

Ice. Resists only itself, and weak to 5 other types. Yeah, sadly this one's the worst.

I personally think Dark is the most unecessary. I've never had a great experience using Dark-type moves

Fairy. It was introduced far too late and has been retroactively applied to a paltry handful of Pokémon, hasn't been applied to several Pokémon it should have been (why aren't the Lake Guardians part-Fairy, or Mew?) and honestly its movepool isn't all that impressive. Maybe it won't feel quite as out of place in a couple more generations, but as things stand I would definitely say it is the least important type. It doesn't really add anything essential to the games.

As a general note, I don't play competitive Pokémon. I am aware that Dragons needed a counter and that Fairy corrects some of the balancing issues. But I don't think that sufficient reason to introducing a completely new type.

There's a lot of arguments for this. Ground and Rock overlap, yes. I'd say I'd want to remove Rock, though. Ground just covers more boundaries, like sand and earth instead of just... rock.
Fairy type also feels kind of... forced.

Now, I know that grass has its reasons but it is weak to 4 types and 6 other types have a resistance to it, not only that but only a small handful of them are useful, imo.

I'm not competitive, not in the slightest, so I don't know all this meta stuff that everyone above me stated.
I personally feel less inclined to have/use Bug types. Most Bugs I'll have evolved and tossed aside by the first 3-4 gyms, although I will admit I've had several Bug type Pokémon all the way to the Champion/post game. Namely Ribombee and Araquanid (which are apparently very popular in meta??).
