Have you guys ever heard of epiphenomenalism?

 

Nope. What is that

 

Well, basically, it's a philosophical theory trying to explain what we, as human beings, really are, focusing on our perceptions. Looking it up, it's also known as the "self-model theory of subjectivity". Epiphenomenalism is merely my self-made translation of the german word "Epiphänomenalismus", so it might be wrong.
Simplified, it states that our brain creates a simulation based on the real, physical world. As such, the world we "perceive" is not the real world, per say, but instead a simulation of it. Everything is represented. For example, if you were to think of one of your favourite books, you would be able to imagine/represent its attributes (weight, size, design, etc.) even though you are not holding the book in your hands in that moment. According to this theory, this means that you've created a mental copy of the book and its attributes from which you draw the information. Furthermore, and that's perhaps the most interesting part, we simulate ourselves into the simulated world, without realizing it. As such, we are only directly intercating with our simulated world and the objects we've represented in our mind.
Even though this is strongly simplified, I find this theory quite interesting. After all, the implications of this are vast, and to be honest, it would be fascinating if our brains were able to create such authentic simulations (even though we have never known anything else according to the theory, so we are most likely biased).
