"So how can I create an actor-like bard who channels her magic as easily as singing a song?" Karanu wondered. "Is there a specific combo of skills for that?"

 

"Sounds like something you'd hear in a magical isekai, indeed," Wakeng mused, having handed off his portion of the bottles to the alchemist as well. "Though it could also be because of one of the potions you were carrying."

 

Robin sweatdropped at Harvin’s shaky response. At this rate, he would really risk dropping these bottles! Before Robin had any time to react, Hardin had already returned to the guild. Well, Robin could worry about that later.

 

"Ah, perfect timing," Robin remarked, seeing his taro puffs arriving. They really did look as authentic as he expected them to be - perfectly crisp and flaky, which was very difficult to perfect. He had to give the maker credit. As he sat down, he listened in on the conversation. What were these 'Masters', anyway? In response, he shook his head and helped himself to one taro puff.

Kanaru studied the flute she had found before. Maybe once I have some time to myself, and I can get somewhere safe, I'll see if I have the knack for channeling magic through it...

The instrument looked no different from the dizi her father had brought back for her after a business trip to China. Since she could already play that well, how different was this instrument going to be?

 

And then Elio shook his head. He was aware of the Huiman Inn's reputation, yes, but Wakeng also had a point. Not that he saw it himself, but still...

By the time everyone regrouped, the aroma of fried rice tickled the boy's nose. He immediately dug in, savoring both the rice and the salted egg while at it. And yes, the saltiness of the egg was perfect.

Elio soon perked up when Jared asked about the Masters. "You mean, like Master Harvin just now?" he chirped. I mean, Cira did briefly introduce the Alchemist and Vitality Masters back in the guild earlier -- and she herself was the Bard Master. Plus, if Elio'd heard it right, there was a very brief mention of the Duelist Master when Cira explained about her line of work in the guild. So... yeah. Not all, but some.

 

Ando considered Travolto's question. He hadn't thought much about the type of magic he wanted to learn... then again, he hadn't had much time to think about it. The idea that he even could learn magic was still setting in.

He greeted his companions as they returned to the table. When Jared asked about the Masters, Ando shook his head. "I believe we've only met three of them," he said.

Kanaru was snapped to attention by the arrival of the food she had asked for. It looked delicious--so deciding on magic could wait for now.

 

The taro puffs were everything that Robin expected them to be, and more. They were perfectly crisp, which was an art in itself and went to show the skill level of the kitchen here. But before Robin could enjoy his food longer, his thoughts were clinging onto the conversation at hand.

Battlemage? Terraforming? Summoning? This really sounded like he was back in the Halidom again - although abilities were being exercised in the real world. What was this? It sounded like the guild was organised. Moreover, the revelation led him to wonder if Naga knew she was sending him to potentially dangerous territory that involved magic.

 

"So they're like college professors, hm," Wakeng mused, slowly eating his own meal. The wanton noodles were thick and savoury; like one of the traditional restaurants he ate at once. Tuning into the current conversation, he added, "sometimes it's better to admire your heroes from afar; who knows what kind of craziness they have in person," before taking another sip from his bowl.

Kanaru nodded in agreement as she too enjoyed her sesame chicken and crab rangoons. "In many stories I have heard, sometimes the heroes turn out to be not-so-heroic, and the villains are really misunderstood nice people." She wasn't sure if anime and manga existed here, so framing them as stories helped get her point across.

 

"Oh, condolences," Wakeng replied, pausing his food to tilt his head. "Though I didn't mean it that way; maybe he doesn't cut his fingernails or something."

Kanaru balked back at the sudden outburst. "I am so sorry...I didn't know." she replied.

 

At this point, all that remained in Ando's bowl was broth. He listened to the conversation at the table while thinking about the different schools of magic. Some of the names - Vitality, Transmutation, Summoning - seemed intuitive to figure out what they related to, but others - Duelist, Battlemage, Alchemist - were less so. He'd have to ask for more specifics later.

At one of Kanaru's comments, Ando quietly shook his head. She sounded naïve at best. Some people were exactly as evil as they acted, a lesson he learned first-hand. Travolto's outburst thankfully indicated that this Dr. Fueya was not one of those people. They boy's last comment piqued Ando's interest. "Missing, you say? For how long?"

 

Robin smiled uncomfortably. He wasn't expecting to have a story like this shared with him. They had only just met for a day, and yet he was hearing what sounded like a guild secret.

In Robin’s own experience, the last time he heard about a missing or dead person was Robyn. He could understand the hope that the person in question would still be alive. Even then, he knew better than to be optimistic. Plus, it wasn't exactly his place to make an opinion.

 

As for Elio, he shifted uncomfortably as he ate with the topic quickly spiraling to a recently missing person. Made even worse when said missing person turned out to be Harvin's predecessor as the Alchemist Master, Dr. Fueya. And no, Elio wasn't even at the guild when Dr. Fueya went missing. His main concern at the time was fleeing from the bandits who'd ransacked his hometown -- Namu Village, south from the clearing he'd first met the foreigners earlier -- to the point of him inadvertently losing contact with his family.
