Blade sat, curled up in the corner of his room. It couldn't be. It message had to have been some kind prank. There as no way... not after all of this time. He was dead. They had recovered what was left of his body. He couldn't be back. And yet...

 

Blade left his apartment and started walking aimlessly around the city. He didn't know, but he just couldn't stay put. Something deep inside of him knew that what he had just read was real. Blade knew Reploids that had 'died' and been brought back. It had happened to Zero several times. But still, the idea that his old CO, Magma Dragoon, could have returned... he just couldn't understand it. But that message had been sent by him. Magma Dragoon, the one who had turned against the Maverick Hunters and helps orchestrate the Repliforce disaster, had sent him a challenge summons. But how? Why? Could this be related to everything else going on? There were so many questions running through Blade's mind that he couldn't keep track of them all.

 

Blade found himself at the edge of town, looking up at a mountain off in the distance. He remembered how hard it had been he had first heard of his CO's betrayal. The entire 14th Special Unit had been abandoned after that. Some had left the Maverick Hunters while some, such as Blade, had been reassigned to general hunter positions under close watch by the higher ups. It had taken years for Blade to earn back the trust he had lost back then.
Blade sighed and started walking again, making his way to the mountain. Dreading what he would find up there.

 

Blade reached the base of the mountain and hesitated. What if this was just a set up? Someone trying to lure out Blade on his own to take him out? Then again, who would want to take him out? Blade was just a single member of the Maverick Hunters, after all. It's not like anyone he knew had any particular grudges against him. And even if it was real, why would he go? It's not like he had to meet with Magma Dragoon. He could just turn around and leave.
"No." Blade told himself. "I have to know."

 

At the top of the mountain, Blade looked around. There did not appear to be anyone around, so he turned around and was about to head back down.
"I didn't think that you would come."
Blade whipped around and fired a blast from his buster in the direction the voice had come from. The figure standing there jumped back behind the rock it had just walked out from in time to avoid the attack.
"So, it is you." Blade said. "How? Why are you back? What did you call me here for?"
"Is that really any way to treat an old friend?"
Magma Dragoon walked out from behind the rock again. He appeared to have a new body, which had a sleeker design more in line with modern generation Reploids. He was still tall though and had the same air of intimidation and authority to him.
"We aren't friends." Blade responded as he ignited his sword. "Now answer my questions."

 

"I was brought back by, well, let's just say by a kindly benefactor." Magma Dragoon said.
"You mean Weil, right?" Blade asked.
"Oh, so you already know who the one running the show right now is? That will make this easier to explain. You see, the good doctor has plans for this world, but not everyone is going to agree with his ideals. And when ideals clash, wars follow. That's why I'm here. To fight in the upcoming war. I called you here to see if you'd join me. We used to make a good team."
"That was before you became a monster." Blade growled. "Do you realize how many have died because of your betrayal? And for what? A fight against an S-Class Hunter. I'm sorry, sir, but I don't share your lust for battle or your lack of morals. But thanks for the information. I'll be sure to put it to good use."
"I knew you'd say that." Dragoon sighed. "But I was hoping it wouldn't have to come to this."
"Don't lie. I know you wanted to fight me. All you've ever wanted was to fight."

 

Blade jumped out of the way of an incoming fireball and retaliated by shooting at Magma Dragoon. The battle had begun. Magma Dragoon gave a tremendous roar and charged at Blade. Blade raised up his sword and blocked a flaming punch. Magma Dragoon countered with a leg sweep, knocking Blade to the ground. Blade was able to react quickly, however, and rolled away just in time to avoid another punch. Blade rose to his feet just as Magma Dragoon was about to kick him in the face and was able to block it with his sword. Magma Dragoon took a few steps back and the two combatants started slowly circling each other, both waiting for the other to make the next move.

 

Magma Dragoon lunged forward and did a spinning kick, engulfing himself in a tornado of flames. Blade was knocked back by the attack but was able to do a backwards flip off of the ground and land back on his feat. He then changed at Magma Dragoon as the maverick regained his balance after the attack, slashing his sword through the air and striking Magma Dragoon across the chest. Magma Dragoon stumbled back, as massive gash across his armor.
"It looks like that new body of yours has its drawbacks." Blade said tauntingly. "That attack wouldn't have done nearly as much damage to you back in the old days."
"I can't say I particularly care for some of the changes they made either, but I didn't exactly have a choice in the design."

 

Magma Dragoon suddenly unleashed a massive blast of fire from his mouth that Blade was barely able to dodge and followed it up by rushing towards Blade with a fist drawn back, engulfed by flame. Blade was quick too quick for him, however, and a moment later Magma Dragoon found himself with Blade's energy sword impaled through his chest. Magma Dragoon's flames fizzled out and he slumped to the ground.
"Heh, good fight." He smiled weekly.
"It didn't have to end this way." Blade said. "It never did."
"We both know that it did." Magma Dragoon whispered as the lights of his eyes dimmed. "But it was a good fight."
That was it for Magma Dragoon. What remained of his energy was lost and there was nothing left but the body.
"I know." Blade said as he pulled his sword out. "I know."

 

Blade picked up Magma Dragoon's remains and carried the fallen maverick in his arms as he made his way down the mountainside. He had a lot of mixed feelings, thoughts and emotions swirling around his processors but he knew one thing. The higher ups were going to want to hear about this.
