Internet Explorer has finally met the end of its line with its branding finally going away, joining Flip phones, Palm Pilots, and Myspace as a relic in digital past.

In retiring the Explorer brand, Microsoft is looking to get its mojo back with consumers, especially those frustrated office workers who loved to hate Microsoft's sluggish browser.

Microsoft had decided to hang up Internet Explorer and start fresh with a new web browser, codename: "Project Spartan." This is supposed to be the major web browser for Windows 10 when it is released, but Internet Explorer will still exist for Windows 10, so don't be frightened.

'Internet Explorer will still exist in some versions of Windows 10 mainly for enterprise compatibility, but the new Project Spartan will be named separately and will be the primary way for Windows 10 users to access the web.'

What are some of your thoughts on this news? How much will you miss Internet Explorer? Can Microsoft regain ground it has ceded with Project Spartan?

I wouldn't miss internet explorer, as now I am the savvy and use Chrome, but it will be missed for meme making. My mother still uses internet explorer, although she has fire fox and chrome on her computer, so it's not that big of a switch.
Project Spartan better be fast, otherwise, it won't be going anywhere.

I'm not going to miss it that much. Hopefully, Spartan will be pretty fast. They probably just did it to clear its name, the new browser might be the same thing except with a new theme or something. :P

Farewell, Internet Explorer. As a proud member of the Mac side of the universe, you will not be missed.

    It's about. Damn. Time.
I couldn't stand when people use internet explorer when they have other options.
And whenever project spartan comes out I'll probably wanna take a look at it, but if its nothing better than IE then I'll probably uninstall it that very moment as well. :P

What took them so long? It's widely agreed that it is the worst browser by so many people, and like Sanc said, it really is about time they got rid of it. No complaints from me. Bye bye!

I'm super glad for this. There are a lot of people out there that still use this that are missing out on the much faster browsing of Chrome and Firefox and other browsers. Not a tear will be shed here, let me tell you that.

Years & years later, Microsoft finally realizes they have competition (Firefox, Chrome, Safari etc). I've always despised the slug that was "Internet Explorer". Regardless if their new and (maybe improved) web browser actually turns out to be something better than its predecessor, I will still be sticking with my beloved Firefox.

I'm honestly surprised. I thought they'd try to improve it, not scrap it. Ah well. I use Google Chrome anyway.

As those old macros used to say, "Internet Explorer: the best browser for downloading another browser."
I won't miss IE itself, but it'll be slightly strange to not have it around [as much] anymore.

Honestly, Internet Explorer has come a long long way since its initial release. The sad part is it still is a great browser, just completely overshadowed by other ones since it doesn't perform as quickly. Chrome master race

Finally. I could never stand IE when I had other options, and I've very happy that it's going to get scrapped. This new Project Spartan probably won't be used by me though, unless Chrome is glitching the hell out.

Something tells me Spartan will be about as different from IE as "Domino's" is from "Domino's Pizza".

That is to say, it will be the exact same thing, aside from an entirely pointless rebranding.

A small minimally-informed prediction by me: Spartans are big tough guys with big strong shields right? Let's make a super secure browser through which absolutely no infectious software can pass! Yay! But in the process they're going to go all Vista, miss the point of security entirely, and end up bombarding the users with ineffective security prompts and holey software.

So who here has been keeping tabs on this? Supposedly, it's now called 'Edge' (although Spartan would've been a much cooler name) and rumour has it that it could give Chrome a fair challenge.

Here is its tile icon; [IMG]

And a quick run-down of what to expect from it; Edge Preview

Seems to share some traits with Chrome, interestingly enough. What's Cortana, though? Microsoft's attempt at Siri?

Cortana is the Microsoft equivalent of Siri, yes. I recall that being an article of some attention several months prior.

Spartan might have been an interesting name, but Edge? To be fair, they are about equal calibre names, so there is little difference. Of course, a new name doesn't mean a whole lot - as Zero Sifr did mention, a re-branding changes nothing unless the browser itself also goes through fundamental changes.

The only thing that IE truly had going for it is when interacting with business websites, such as auto-filling of PDF forms (some professional sites will only work when accessed through IE; the other browsers either are barred or have greatly reduced functionality). In almost every other respect, it is outperformed.

I wish to say that only time will tell if Microsoft's new browser project will be any good, but the first major hurdle it has to overcome is to prove that their browser - in name, functionality, and ease of use (among others) - will not be another IE. Microsoft's image has already been drastically tarnished in the online browser market, and it will take quite a lot for it to regain a foothold.

I won't be missing IE. It looked like its main function was just to download Chrome/Firefox, never to be used again. As with Spartan, I don't know how things will go for it. Perhaps people might just stick with whatever browsers they currently use, leaving it to go the way of IE. On the other hand, it might actually be a success. We'll just have to wait and see.

In regards to 'Edge', I might try looking into it; especially with the whole concept of being able to draw/take notes on the webpage which is completely useful for students such as myself. The interface from the pictures make the browser look very clean and modern. I really love how Microsoft is taking in account of popular features from other devices such as the Siri-like Cortana. However, with the branding all that jazz, it will take a decent amount of time for Edge to ever gain any sort of popularity, especially considering how popular browsers like Chrome and Firefox have become and the comfort people feel in them.

Finally? I hated using Internet Explorer on my Windows laptop so much. At one point, I was even using Safari for web browsing in Windows (before I discovered Chrome). Well I hope their new browser matches up to Apple's Safari, which is sometimes even better than Chrome.

To be fair, Edge doesn't look to bad. Being able to draw on the webpages is a pretty interesting feature I'd like to try out. I hope they release it on Mac tho (doubt it), 'cuz it's too tiring to turn on my Windows laptop these days XD
