So, as someone who often looks into the deeper aspects of Pokémon games, such as the coding, I'm always finding myself coming across strange things whenever a new Pokémon game is data-mined, and there was something bothering me with Mimikyu from the second its stats were leaked from the Sun and Moon demo datamine. Now, each Pokémon is listed as their Pokédex number in the coding, with additional forms having an extra string of numbers on the end (e.g. - Shaymin Land Forme is 492, Shaymin Sky Forme is 492-01). This applies to any Pokémon with an alternate form, whether it be a form change, a Mega Evolution, or a regional variant. However, as I was watching someone go through the compiled data mined from the Sun and Moon demo, I noticed that a certain Pikachu look-a-like had more listings that expected. Mimikyu, in its regular appearance, is listed as 778, while Busted Mimikyu (the form it takes when Disguise activates), is listed as 788-01. However, there were actually two more listings for Mimikyu within Sun and Moon's files, 788-02 and 788-03. Of course, there were no new images for these two listings, both using the same data that Busted Mimikyu has. However, it is clear that there's more to this than meets the eye. If we take a look at this leaked image of the Pokemon Global Link artwork for all Generation 7 Pokemon, we can see that the same mysterious listings appear for Mimikyu. (The other two listings at the bottom are Magearna's original appearance, and Marshadow) Now, and this is pure speculation, but what if Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon will introduce us to the Mimikyu that lives beneath the facade? There are already a few Pokémon in Generation 7 who "change forms" when they perform certain attacks, the best examples of this being Solgaleo's Radiant Sun phase and Lunala's Full Moon phase, which occur when they use their signature moves, Sunsteel Strike and Moongeist Beam respectively. So, does this mean that Mimikyu will be able to learn a new move in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon that allows it to change form in the same manner? To this, I say no, and that's because there's more in-game evidence that leads me to a different conclusion. In the trailer for Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, we see a brief glimpse of Togedemaru, Midday Lycanroc and Mimikyu in some cutscenes that weren't in the original Generation 7 titles. This has lead me, and many other fans, to believe that these 3 Pokémon will be receiving exclusive Z-Moves in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. That being said, there is one other Pokémon who changes form when performing an attack, this time being Marshadow. Marshadow's body colours change similar to Solgaleo and Lunala, but this occurs when it uses its Z-Move, 7-Star Soul Stealing Strike. We also know that Z-Moves have the potential to create definite effects on the battle, such as how Mew's Genesis Supernova causes Psychic Terrain to become active. With all of this evidence, I am theorising that Mimikyu's supposed Z-Move will cause it to change form, much like Marshadow, however this form change is permanent for the rest of the fight, and since there's two unknown forms of Mimikyu, it could be that performing the Z-Move whilst having Disguise still inactivated (regular Mimikyu) and after having it activated (Busted Mimikyu) could result in two different forms of Mimikyu. What're your thoughts on my theory? Comment down below and start discussing!
I'd say that it sound like it could at least be viable. I'm from the show-me-state, so I'd need to see for myself. I do remember the zmoves in the direct so there is promise. At this point though, it is too early to tell. All I can really say is that it's a cool theory and I really like it.
I think that this is possible, but I think that there will be a form specific to the upcoming games (where one is specific to Ultra Sun and the other is specific to Ultra Moon). It would be cool to see Z Moves unlock these neat new forms, but we will just have to wait and see how things go as more information is released.
The fact that the numbers after Mimikyu are 778-02 and 778-3 certainly do point to unseen forms for Mimikyu. I'm not sure about it being unmasked though given that it's Pokédex entry talks about a scholar seeing it unmasked and dying from shock. Maybe it'll have alternate disguises where it disguises itself as Pokémon other than Pikachu? Sun Pokédex: Its actual appearance is unknown. A scholar who saw what was under its rag was overwhelmed by terror and died from the shock.
It would be very neat and I am guessing they would do an alternate costume but usually, that stays under the same entry, like the Miniors or gender variants. Since the Pokédex entry did say it was too terrifying someone died they either have a lot to deliver in the creepy category or they could be evolutions or all new Pokémon.
I definitely think Mimikyu will have more forms of generic popular Pokémon like Pikachu. However, I think it's natural state might end up with baby Kangaskhan's fate.
It will probably just be another disguise of a Pokémon, such as Meowth or Charizard, with both regular and busted forms of that costume.
hmm..I kinda want to say "Mimikyu-Raichu, Normal and Busted" for this. It does sound interesting, I can't wait to see if anything happens with Mimikyu!
This sounds pretty awesome and it's a plausible theory. The only issue is that Gamefreak might get in trouble if their customers end up dying of shock upon viewing Mimikyu without its disguise...
What if it's costume changes instead? Right now it's only found as a Pikachu, but what if you can find items, like the nectar you give to Oricorio, that changes the costume it wears and that somehow changes the moves it can use?
I guess is possible it could happen, I'm mostly interested in whenever or not we get to see Mimikyu unveiled at last, although I do recall its dex entry saying something not so nice if you ever saw its true face.
It's more than likely gonna happen, whether or not it has an impact on the story remains to be seen. Maybe it'll be like rockruff in that it has two alternate forums split between games.
Maybe, just hope they won't force it to be some stupid form change that require it to hold something like that for it to show its true form. I would be okay with version exclusive tho.
Yeah, I really dislike the form change through object, for the likes of Groudon, Kyogre and Giratina I'm fine considering they're legendaries and there's story behind it but for others it's just stupid.
Saying we're bound to see the real Mimikyu is like saying we're bound to see diglett's feet. Even when you could rotate the image in the Pokédex to look underneath it, there was no luck with that. It's probably just going to stay as flavor text.
I think it would be cool to have more forms of Mimikyu. More specifically, more costumes of other popular Pokémon. Maybe it's an evolution where it dons a Raichu costume? If it doesn't evolve, I would love to see version exclusive Mimikyus, just like Lycanroc.
The data mining was super interesting...theory time! The creepypasta side of me jumps at the sound of an unmasked Mimikyu, but I think it'll be post-game/special circumstances thing, due to the whole 'die of fright' entry. It would be a real pain to have to do some weird task to unmask a Mimikyu, and would just be annoying, though. If there's something about 'befriending a Mimikyu to unmask it', that would be cool, but I doubt it. Mimikyu is awesome, but I don't see it getting a whole quest to itself. Or maybe there'll be just the one Mimikyu that can take off it's mask; you get one per game or something, like the Cosplay Pikachu. #MissingNo
Well the popular theory is that they might release a different evolution or form depending on how you raised it.in the next games. Maybe when it reaches a certain level, it will evolve into something that reflects how tits trainer treated them? Like if it has max happiness/friendship it evolves into a "support" type Pokémon with high defensive stats, but if you treat it badly it evolves into something terrible that has a ridiculously high attack but low defenses (Perhaps out of rage?)
