Back in...I believe the early 90s, Lucasfilm (LucasArts did not yet exist), developed a computer game. It was a text-speech, pixel-graphics adventure game about pirates, love, death, and GROG.

It was known as "The Secret of Monkey Island", and it was glorious.

Let's face it, when your character is named "Guybrush Threepwood" and looks less like a pirate and more "like a flooring inspector" (quote; the shopkeeper) you know things are going to be awesome.

Anyway, it's an adventure game in which you must navigate the perils of treasure hunting (dance skills are a part of this), swordfighting (it's kinda like making love...) and thievery (the governor's priceless treasure belongs in a museum!) on your quest to become a pirate and defeat the dreaded Ghost Pirate LeChuck.

Anyway, that game was a huge amount of fun, and by the time Monkey Island 2 came along, staggeringly clever fourth-wall breaks were introduced, and the style, humor, and fun of the original were very well maintained. Also, the music was stellar.

Then along came Curse of Monkey Island, which featured cartoon style animation, and actual speech/voice actors, and that was about when I stopped playing them. I understand the fourth Monkey Island (Tales of?) went into 3D graphics as well.

Admittedly I am a bit of a stubborn purist there.

So, who else is familiar with this masterpiece of a series?

This was one of the best series of games I have ever played. I loved the different aspects of the Monkey Island series. I admittedly was very young when I played the games for the first time but I still remember playing them like it was yesterday. The one game in the series I most remember playing was Escape from Monkey Island. I fell in love with the interface and the humorous dialogue that many of the characters had. The mechanics of the game are really fantastic and seeing this topic makes me want to play the game all over again.
