They're similar in some ways, and different in others. Which do you prefer, and why? Do you like both, or neither?
What do you like/dislike about them? Any notable experiences involving one and/or the other?
Are there any species' you particularly like or dislike, with or without reason?

Butterflies without a doubt. They are definitely much more beautifully coloured between the two and are much more pleasant to look at as compared to the drab-coloured moths. I don't think there is anything in particular that I dislike about them, except maybe the tendency for their wing scales to rub off on me when I touch them. One memorable memory would be when a butterfly landed on my finger while I was at a butterfly farm when I was younger and it refused to fly away throughout the entire time I was there. I almost brought it home it as a pet if it weren't for my parents who made it fly away in the end. /sadface

do we needz to do dis this again

I like butterflies! They're far pretter than any of the moths you can observe flying around in this country. It's a pity they're such a rare sight where I live.

I love Moths myself. They can be just as beautiful as Butterflies, and I think they're cuter! I mean look at these examples!

The only difference between butterflies and moths is their sleeping patterns.

I don't have to flip a coin to determine which lepidopteran I like best; in my case it's certainly the moth. While moths are certainly more drab colour-wise than butterflies, I find them to be quite fascinating, with their fascination to light, their feather-like antennae, and - most of all - the sheer size some of these things can become; if memory serves, the largest lepidopteran species is a moth. (I did a search. Yep, it's this thing.)

I have seen a gathering of moths before, very late at night, around a gas station, and each of the moths individually, with wings retracted, was the size of my thumb.

I suppose on the whole butterflies may have more going for them, but it is the specific examples of moths that really entice me.

Woah, those are some really beautiful moths! I think the greenish one's design is really unique. It looks like it has gems on its wings! I think it's safe to say that with your post, I now give a 50-50 to butterflies and moths.

The white one? I'm not sure. I tried looking for the name too, it wasn't around the image or the page it was originally posted on. unfortunately. But I agree!

Luna Moths are one of my favorites. We get those a lot where I live too. I've caught several and taken pictures that I have yet to post xD They just sit on you if you let them, making photography of them easy. Glad I got you to like them more! x3

I tried to see if I could find that white moth with strikingly red abdomen. I did a bit of a search, but right now I don't have many leads besides its appearance, and I found...nothing. I even looked through a gallery hundreds of photographs in size and found nothing. I would like to find out, but I believe I should sit back and look for a lead or two before I try again.

I don't know why not knowing frustrates me as much as it does, but here I am.

I remember as a kid, that a moth came into our room, and I was so scared of it, I think i've been scared of moths ever since.
    I'm a butterfly person.

Moths. They may eat your clothes, but I can't betray my fellow nighttime critters. Butterflies are nice in their own way. I like the blue & black patterns the best.

I've always loved butterflies; there's just something about them that I find cute and calming, and they're one of few insects that I don't even mind touching. My class used to raise monarch butterflies from caterpillars back in first grade, which was where most of the fondness for them came from. I've had some pretty bad memories with moths, sadly, or else I might enjoy them more. ;; Though, many of the ones I've seen listed in this thread have been exceptions, for being much cuter than I thought they would be.

I like both! But moths are so cute and fuzzy I have to say I like them more. I wish the big cute ones were around my area, rather than the boring ones haha.

Both creatures can be very beautiful, but I am slightly more bias towards butterflies due to some bad experiences I've had with moths in the past. Butterflies tend to have really vivid colors that appeal more to me than that of a moth's and they also don't attack people when they have light in the darkness outside.
