Hey guys, c; I was just watching a video, it is sort of a podcast type thing where a few people discuss random things. At one point, one person said that they believe falling into depression is natural, while being happy is a choice you have to make every day, and a habit you have to get into.

    It really made me think...

Do you believe that happiness or depression are more "natural" for humans? Do you believe these things are choices? Perhaps you believe all emotions are natural?

Psychology is something I've always been excessively interested in so I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's thoughts :)

It is natural, one depends of he other. They come toghether, when one comes the other leaves.

You cannot choice you emotions, the life choice when they should appear, but it is our desicion to face what the life throw us or leave the life do what it wants. The emotions are natural thing, For example it is normal to react with depression when someone hurt you feelings, but you can decide if you want to be hurted or to put that person in the place that he/she should be. Also it is normal for example if a very close friend of yours come to you and says "I have a gift for you", then happiness come even if the gift is bas, you are happy because your friend appreciate you.

I can say that the feelings and emotions are natural in the life, but you decide which ones you want to have.

Well, speaking literally, all emotions are natural. All of them are natural chemical reactions and electrical responses to our environment. Even from a non-literal perspective, I do believe that all emotions are natural. No-one cruises through life without anything wrong happening, no matter what fronts they may put up to convince people otherwise. Depression is part of working through these obstacles, and coming out from them stronger. Happiness is also natural, it's a natural reaction to the good things in life. Some people suggest that you could choose not to feel depressed or happy, but I disagree. As someone who worked through depression myself, you can't just not feel it. You can suppress it, but it's more damming it up than making it go away. One day, that dam will burst and you will feel everything you've been trying to avoid; you can't just decide that it doesn't exist because it does.

So in short, I think all emotions are natural, and to an extent all of them are healthy. We have to experience the lows in life to understand others and gain a greater perspective of ourselves and our world. We will experience highs eventually, and those are equally as important for perspective and understanding.

Here's a fun fact about me: In real life, I will almost always seem to be happy. The only times when I'm not happy is when I am really, really pissed off, or when you're a close friend of me. No matter how angry, sad or depressed I might be, I will always pretend to be happy to others, simply because I don't want anyone else to be worried about me.

In my opinion, emotions itself is not a choice. When something great happens, you're happy, if something bad happens, you're sad. It all comes naturally. However, at least for me, the emotions that you show to the outside world are indeed a choice of your own. You can pretend to be sad, angry or happy, even if you're not actually experiencing those emotions at that time. But maybe that's just me, maybe other people are incapable of faking emotions, I honestly don't know.

We able to know more about each other through body language and how we feel through our faces rather than what we speak or say. Its like the aura that we have that surrounds us shows how we are. That's why animals, especially dogs can understand us more. I mean yes, emotion is real and we do show how we feel but we sometimes hide how we actually feel, (hence why I say there is aura around us)
