Nintendo is planning on beginning development to bring its franchises to the world of mobile gaming!

After years and years of them denying to make the leap, and only sticking to their own consoles, the decision to bring franchises like Mario, and, yes, Pokémon, to owners of mobile devices, such as phones or tablets.

The games themselves will not be ports of games already made, such as the newly released Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, but original content designed solely for mobile platforms.

Nintendo, however, isn't going on this venture alone. They have contracted Japanese mobile gaming company DeNA to help them with the process and challenge of bringing their lovable characters, and possibly new ones, to mobile devices.

Nintendo has already made plans to create a worldwide membership program to co-enside with the games, that is set to launch later this year.

What do you think about this? Do you think Nintendo is right to make the move to mobile gaming, or should they stick to tradition? Is there a possibility for better business once they make this venture?

It seems like there's only one thing for certain. The Japanese name of Pokémon, Pocket Monsters, will finally have the possibility to live up to the title.

I don't like this at all. I don't even own a mobile, but honestly these games are best played on an actual console or handheld. If they make it so all Nintendo games are on mobile, and not on a console or handheld that will be really awful and I won't even able to buy video games anymore.

So yeah, not a fan. :[

Honestly though, I think all the handhelds fit nicely in the pocket. I take my 3DS everywhere.

They can make their little mobile games, but I am personally not a mobile gamer. Virtual buttons are weird when trying to play a game. I'm sticking with console and handheld Nintendo games. 99% of the mobile games will likely be poor quality anyway, with lots of limitations. That's how a lot of mobile games in general are.

Well I for one am looking forward to this! Being equipped with female pockets makes it only ideal to bring my hand phone so now I can play Pokémon even without my DS and 3DSes! I can't wait to see what kind of games will be available for mobiles!

I think one of us is misunderstanding this. I took it as they would be making games designed specifically for the phone controls; aka not main series games. I imagine that any Pokémon games (Or games from any other well known Nintendo franchise such as Mario) would be spin offs and not replacements for the handheld consoles. I don't believe making games for phones would affect what we get on handhelds.

I personally won't be getting the phone games, but good on Nintendo for expanding their audience further!

No, of course not. I understand what the article is about, but I'm saying that possibly in the future they might remove these consoles and handhelds all together, as the sales aren't doing too great for the Wii U right now and the mobile industry is booming and improving a lot.

A future without the consoles and handhelds we love is seeming more of a possibility now, since sales seem to be declining since people would rather use their mobile. I'm traditional though, I will always stick to the consoles/handhelds.

I highly doubt they would stop producing consoles, as that would severely reduce the capability and freedom they have in their games. They would lose a lot of their fanbase, because most phones don't have the power to play a new main Legend of Zelda or Pokémon game, for example. A future without handhelds or consoles would mean everything Nintendo is known for would be reduced to 'Tap Tap Pikachu', and 'Metroid Tower Defence'.

It's not even confirmed that they'll be making games on phones in the first place! They just said they will soon be releasing content for mobile phones, and games could be part of it.

The article I read filled me with fear. They asked what could be in the future and named two possibilities. First was a mario infinite runner, which granted, could be pretty good actually, depending. the other was the bad one, the article suggests Zelda crush saga. I sincerely hope not. That is like a slap to the zelda franchise. but it did get me thinking about possible mobile iterations, which would be the kind of things that are popular, just using Nintendo IP Some could be kind of cool, like a hyrule city builder, where you can train and recruit troops and heroes. I half suspect that games like Puzzle vs Mario and Pokémon shuffle might see mobile release (since that's essentially what they are) even though he does mention not porting games. So I think the mobile move could go either way. If you use spin off games to promote your real games it might encourage sales, but if the games produced reflect poorly on the originals, it could ruin them. We'll just have to see how it goes though I guess

I don't like the idea personally. I understand they are trying to draw in the people who wouldn't really go near Nintendo stuff normally, but Nintendo shouldn't have to do this. They are their own company, they make titles that are amazing and they don't need people who don't see the quality. I understand, but that don't mean I gotta like it.

I'm not really looking forward to this at all. I personally think the should stick to the tradition since they've basically built a name around that. I understand mobile games are becoming more and more popular, but those games are so bland. Mobile games aren't meant to be played with the mindset to finish either, so I think Nintendo would pretty much lose what made games so addicting in the first place.
    I really hope this doesn't become a thing. I really, really don't.

Oh? So soon i can pay to make Mario jump higher? And skip levels with Gems? Other nice Micro transactions?

But really an interesting choice. Also ironic. Because this makes Nintendo a third party developer.

Well i start this thing by saying that i think that most mobile games are disgusting. Filled with Micro transactions and paywalls, it makes them the least enjoyable forms of casual gaming.

I have mentioned this before and i say this again, they dont know what they are doing. Mobile games were on their peak two years ago. By jumping in now is a bit of a waste on resources. We cant fully judge this situation, since Nintendo hasn't made any games yet, but i am god damn sure they will not make original concepts.
My speculation is that they will make A Pokémon tower defense game similar to Clash of clans. Free runner game with Mario skin. Pokémon shuffle on mobile, which is a copy of candy crush and more!

If Nintendo REALLY would like to make money, jump to PC gaming god damn it!

Animal crossing on Steam! Sharing villages with Steam Friends.
    Pokémon MMO!
    Legend of Zelda RPG!
Pc has so much power. The possibilities.
    But no. Mobile gaming.

Well i guess i wait for Flappy Pikachu...

No Nintendo, please don't start on the mobile game stuff stay focuses on your handheld instead, is just as easy to take with you as a mobile is.

I don't know how right this feels. Nintendo has always been faithful to keeping their franchises to their consoles and not mobile devices, not to mention in that one interview Masuda talked about how there are people that prefer to play on mobile devices nowadays.

Yeah, I don't really disagree they fit nice in pockets, but for some reason, just not mine.

I also just needed a cheesy way to tie the article up tbh

When I first read this, I was pretty damn scared. But, I realized they're probably just going to do a Pokémon shuffle kind of thing on mobile. Hell, they might even release some sort of official emu for the gameboy or something! I think Nintendo's wiser to not stop making their consoles, so I'm hyped to see what they'll do with this.

edit: welp it has come to my attention that they just announced the nintendo NX, probably a way to calm down all the fans lol

When I first heard about this earlier, I thought to myself, is this project X zone all over again? It's only with a N this time around.
I'm really interested about how Nintendo is so positively sure that the Wii U sales won't decrease. I had plans to buy a Wii U, but I'm really not so sure now. There's a bit too many consoles and games that are coming out with Nintendo. First the New 3ds, and now this?
There's already people planning for pre-orders. and I probably will think about a pre order as well.

As long as this doesn't affect the consoles, I'm okay with this. I mean, I don't even have a mobile device and I don't enjoy the few mobile games I've played. The biggest problem I see that will arise are the sales of the console games going down. (maybe)

Just to be clear Nintendo is no taking anything away from their traditional gaming systems with this move. The company DeNA will basically be doing all the work. The 3DS and Wii U won't be affected by this.

As an avid player of mobile games I hardly mind and am excited to see what Nintendo has in store for mobile platforms. Not one to spend on microtransactions as I'm generally a patient person so that won't be too much of a hindrance to me unless it ends up being obnoxious in their mobile games.. which I doubt.

Nintendo's profits are dropping steadily and all they can rely on is the 3DS nowadays so I don't blame them for deciding to take a shot at this; mobile game markets are huge, after all. The Wii U is doing poorly, I heard, and they can't rely solely on the 3DS forever.

One thing I am certain of is that the games quality will be much lower than the actual console/handheld games...and I think Nintendo should pride itself on quality. Most of the games we have now are really good, and I think it would be a shame if newer generations only see Nintendo as a crappy phone game, since not everyone is able to get hold of the console/handhelds.

I don't even want to think about how annoying the controls will be.
