And there you are, standing among the crowd of hundreds of students, people you have never seen in your life. You're nervous, of course. You recently moved to this new town and are still getting your bearings, learning where everything is and who everyone is. This new school should be the best way to familiarize yourself with the people here, but something is off. Maybe it's how everything looks exactly alike or the teachers who stood in the hallways, completely still, eyes and face vacant of feeling. Or perhaps it's that one hallway that has nothing in it that leads to nowhere. The goal here is to make a seemingly normal situation or scenario and make it into something unsettling, terrifying. Something that will put the reader on the edge of their seat, anticipating a monster of unimaginable horrors to leap out from around the corner, even though it never comes. And you have to do this solely with the power of atmosphere. Of course, there are a couple rules. There is to be nothing that is blatantly obvious, like blood on the walls and bodies everywhere, or a ghost haunting the place. These things can be implied, though not explicitly stated. Subtlety is key here. Leave the reader in the dark. Make them wonder, make their imagination run wild. Keep it short and sweet. We're not looking for a multipage college essay length here. After you write out your little tale, post a short prompt for the next person to use for their post. They will do the same for the next person. Make sure the prompts are of normal, everyday situations with just enough vagueness that allows the writer a bit of wiggle room. I will start it off with this prompt: It's the weekend, and you're finally visiting your favorite mall after a long time not stepping foot there. What's different? Does anything seem strange to you?
