When you're playing a Nuzlocke, what rules do you usually abide by? The normal ones? Do you make up your own rules? Bonus Question: Do you like playing your Nuzlockes easy mode (allowing healing items during battle, going to Pokémon centers, etc) or hard mode (playing in set, no healing items, only can catch certain Pokémon, etc etc). I usually play with the normal rules of naming your Pokémon, only catching the first one per route, and considering a Pokémon dead once it faints. Any more and I wouldn't be able to do nuzlockes at all.
I just do standard rules, though I try to keep to a one-healing-item-per-battle rule; forces me to play more strategically during long battles (usually Gym battles, though to be honest I wish that every Gym Leader had a full roster).
I play with normal rules but always throw in some additional ones to keep the game interesting and to force me to use different Pokémon. Personal favorite of mine is only one of each type is allowed in the party. Forces you to add some Pokes you normally wouldn't and to change up your party if you get a Pokémon you really want to add.
I usually go with the standard rules. I'm not sure how many others do this, but I choose my starter based on the last digit of my trainer ID. Or I'll use a random number generator, if the game doesn't let me see it before I get my starter.
I usually go for normal rules and I very rarely used healing items in a regular playthrough so it wasn't too bad to add it to my nuzlocke playthrough, tbh.
My rules in Nuzlocke runs include the three standard rules, in addition to: -No usage of repel or other abilities or items with similar functions. -No healing items of any sort. -The use of dig, fly, teleport, roar, whirlwind, dragon tail and circle throw (as well as attacks with similar functions) are prohibited, inside and out of battle. -Outside help from yourself or other players is prohibited (this doesn't apply to in-game trades or gift Pokémon). -You can't catch a pokémon of the same species/evolution family you own. -Legendaries and mythicals are banned, even if they're your first encounter. -All legendaries must be defeated (roaming and event legendaries can be ignored if chosen). -No use of hacks (obviously) or glitches that give you an edge in the run. -No breeding; eggs however can be claimed if they're your first encounter in an area. -Buildings in cities and towns (i.e Sliph Co. and Saffron City Dojo) are counted as one area; this doesn't apply to anything else. -Gift pokémon can only be claimed if they're you first encounter in an area. -In-game trades don't have to be your first encounter. They must however, be made to deliberately faint, as a sign of sacrifice. -Shinies can be caught even if they're not your first encounter. However, if they're your second or more encounter, you can't use them.
I use the standard plus whatever rule I feel like adding for the run I'm starting up, like can only buy x number of balls and healing items. Can't run from wild battles, can't use repels, can'r use lucky egg and exp. share and so on.
I always lose nuzlockes but the rules I play by are: 1) The normal rules (1 per route, first encounter, nicknaming, etc) 2) Species-clause (for diversity) 3) No healing items in battle 4) Game-over if I run out of Pokémon from BOTH the pc and party 5) Gift Pokémon count as encounters for the area
Aside from the standard rules, I always have the species clause as well. Using items in battle really depends, I'm not really a person to use a lot of items in battle anyway, so it doesn't matter too often.
