With the Pokémon franchise now being over 20 years old I think is time we talk about the old vs the new. Both in the anime and the games, a lot of have changed over the years as technology progressed both the games and anime evolved into what it today. The games went from chunky little pixel sprites to full 3D starting in Gen 6, even if the 3D models are new there's still obvious improvement from Gen 6 to 7, with even a gen 3 remake between the two, especially with the trainer models appear to have improved if you ask me. They might wanna work on facial expression tho now that you can actually see the protagonist's face lol.
Yeah, the facial expressions of the protagonists need to be adjusted. Like the expression is fine, normally, but it is so bland and zombie like in the cutscenes.
Indeed, a shocked looked when something shocking is happening, like when Nihilego appears, would be nice instead of that blank stare, the expression thing is so bad it became a meme.
Yeah, the protagonists facial expressions are a thing that would need to be worked on in the future, since you can actually see their faces now. It's a little humorous to see the faces at times, but in certain events it's not really nice to have an emotional scene going on and the protagonist's face is bland.
Overall, I like the newer gens. They added a bunch of neat features and (obviously) have better graphics than the older games. There are things that I miss from Gen V and below though, like the simplicity of the sprites.
One thing I really like about gen V was the unique perspectives that they employed even though they were limited by pixel graphics. After the 2nd gym leader, you walk over Skyarrow bridge, which is probably the most scenic thing in the whole game. The perspective shifts, pans, and zooms over the whole bridge, and it was really unique for me given the limitation. Now, of course, it's much easier to do that sort of thing, but something about that was charming to me.
I liked the older gens better. At least, the ones before X and Y. The sprites were nice and simple, and there was just a certain charm to the older games that I don't see as much anymore. Black has been my favorite for a while, since the perspectives and the music has been very nice and memorable for me compared to now.
I love how the recent generations have improved so much with the RPG mechanics and that things like HM slaves don't have to take up slots in the party. Older generations did seem to have more wonder involved since it was easier going in blind with the games compared to now with all the social media having spoilers everywhere and trailers showing new Pokémon.
I like the recent generations 3D, but I vastly prefer the pixels of 3-5. Gen 5 having the best use of the pixel style, as the characters seemed to emote even without 3D models.
I like a mixture of the two: Gen 6-7 graphics and Gen 4-5 soundtracks. Personally, I think the storylines in Gens 3-5 were better than in 6-7. However, I can't argue against being able to change my outfit in Gens 6-7. If I had to take a pick, I would choose new.
Is probably a personal taste thing since I've seen many say they prefer the sprites over the 3D models and while the sprites do have a certain charm to them I do hope Game Freak will keep up the progress and we'll one day see some really amazing 3D graphic from them. Probably not Skyrim quality and such but still see some improvement.
Same, the sprites were nice, but it is so cool to see the progress happening. From where we started till now. And maybe the switch will surprise us big time.
It might since they did say it was a core game so maybe they'll kick it up a notch and really give us something good. Also you gotta admit this becoming this is kinda amazing, pokémon have come far since the Red, Blue Green days.
Me too! Is why I used it an as example even if Arcanine have one of the nicer Gen 1 sprites lol. Indeed it does, so I'm really looking forward to what the new games bring, especially the Switch game because we know nothing about it other than it'll be a thing eventually.
Yeah, I am just excited that it will be a thing. Hopefully. A Pokémon main game on the big screen. Aaaah, that will be so cool.
I'm torn, mechanic's wise I prefer the newer gens but for Pokémon I'm a big fan of the older gens. Honestly, gen 4 for the perfect zone for me. A lot to do, and the gameplay/story was entertaining. That and that gen introduced my boy Darkrai!
Gen 5 was pretty nice for a thing in the middle imo, animated sprites in battle even if some of them moves a bit weird but I assume it was because of limitation of that time.
Yeah gen 5 was nice, probably my second fav gen as I did love the games and they had a compelling story. Gen 4 just squeezes its way into 1st place though
All generations have their strengths and weaknesses, but my favourite has to be 4. Which is right in the middle of the series, come to think of it. There were all kinds of places to explore, all sorts of side things to do (e.g. collecting Unowns, contests, so many places to use surf...) that it took me forever to finish when I first played through it. I suppose I like the simplicity of the old games, but also the complexity of the newer games. You know what I mean? The older games didn't have a very strong story, but they left you enough space to fill in the gaps with your imagination. The newer games have less of that, but more compelling stories. Except X/Y, I suppose. It had a good story, but I feel they didn't go into much depth about Team Flare.
