Okay, I'll try to keep it short, while also giving some useful information.

Pokémon X&Y are great. The fact that the games are fully in 3D makes the experience so much different from all the previous games. The music is great, the battles look amazing, and they added many new features to X&Y, including Pokémon-Amie and Super Training. The storyline is good, for Pokémon standards. It's not like you're getting pulled into it, but then again, it's Pokémon, they never focus on the story. I highly recommend taking your time to explore every route, talk to every NPC, and overall enjoy the environment, because if you just rush straight through the game, you'll be done within a few hours. There is barely any story besides of the main plot line, so don't be too hasty.

I won't give a recommendation for a starter, or any other Pokémon in general, because I don't think it's neccessary. The game isn't really difficult, and you don't have to worry too much about putting together a team. Just go with the Pokémon you like, and you'll be fine. Gen VI only added 72 new Pokémon to the Pokédex, so you'll most likely want to use some of your favorite Pokémon from other generations.

    I hope you'll enjoy the game :D

Like Astral said the 3D graphics make the game very different from other Pokémon games. The battles are awesome. Each move has a specific animation and most of them are very cool. Each and every Pokémon has a different fainting animation either.

X and Y just in general has a very different feel to it than the games before it, so even though you've played the other Pokémon games, which are all similar to each other in a lot of ways, X and Y still feels very new.

I'd say the only real downside to this game is that there were only about 70 new Pokémon added, but since there are Pokémon from every generation added, it really isn't that big a deal. I guess another minor downside if you're an experienced Pokémon player is that the game is pretty easy to complete, but you could also see that as an advantage since you can focus more on using your favorite Pokémon, even if they happen to be unevolved.

So I guess everything I said was pretty close to what Astral said. :S
Have fun with the game once you get it. :)

Definitely one of the better Pokémon games out there! I mean it's in 3D So that's a definite major plus, also the poke anime system that allows you to play with your Pokémon, but a down is that it doesn't have dress up for your Pokémon! Which was one of my favorite things to do!

Ok. I have some mixed opinions about this game.

First off, I really like some of the features Game Freak added into this game. Super Training was very helpful, Pokémon Amie made me feel closer to my Pokémon. The internet feature was very welcome and something I wish they did sooner. Fairy types. The graphics are amazing, but I feel like they can be a bit showy.

Like Astral and Shadow said, X&Y feel very different then other games.

    Also.

    Its 3D.

Finally! Its been like, what, a decade since the last 3D Pokémon game?

    Now, on the negatives.

First off, this game is very easy compared to other Pokémon games. Where'd the challenge go? There are so few new Pokémon compared to the other games, that its honestly annoying. Theres one new ground type, and so many Pokémon in this game are part normal. Why? Thank God they added Pokémon from other generations.

The plot is pretty darn bland. Sure, Lysandre is kinda interesting, but the rest of Team Flare are just so boring! What they're trying to do is a shameful rehash of Cyrus was doing, and Team Flare doesn't even pose an immediate threat. All of this is thrown at you towards the end of the game. So there's no build up! I miss Team Rocket now....

I'm not saying these are bad games. They're great. I just feel like they would be better if Game Freak worked on it a little more.
