Would you say you are someone who is optimistic, or pessimistic? How do you feel about those who are the one of the other? Do you ever feel like you need to be one or the other to survive in society?

If you're unclear of the terms:

Being optimistic refers to having a positive outlook on things, while a pessimist is pretty much the opposite - someone who has a negative outlook on things.

Maybe a bit both? We all go through rough spots but I try to be positive and happy for the people that care about me.

I'm more of a pessimist myself, but I act optimistic as much as I can. It's more pleasant for other people that way, since being too critical about situations can ruin the fun people are having. I don't think there's anything wrong with being either or though, they both have their benefits. A good balance would be ideal uvu

I am probably the most optimistic person you will ever meet in your whole entire life. Even when I'm sad or things are really going down for me, I always look to the bright side of things.

    I'm a realist.

Just kidding; I'm more of a pessimist than an optimist. However, that's the case only because I tend to think things through very long.

I'm extremely pessimistic. I find if you expect the worst out of everything you end up being pleasantly surprised.

I'm generally optimistic, but when hanging around pessimists, it can be rough at times to remain with a positive attitude. Some people, no matter how much light you shine on them, will remain pessimistic. I might point out to another person that they're being a tad pessimistic, then they'll usually respond "no, I'm just being realistic!"; as if you can't both be an optimist and fix what's wrong at the same time? Sure, some reality is harsh, but being pessimistic about it will never fix it, only optimism can, for it drives more ambition and devotion. I've learned that being a pessimist gets you virtually nowhere.

I tend to be far more optimistic than pessimistic. Looking at the bright side of everything may seem a little cheesy or fake, but it really is the best way to look at life.

I'm a bit of both? It depends on the situation I guess. For the most part I'd consider myself a pessimist.

Internally, I'm always optimistic, but externally I tend to just mirror whoever I'm around.

Eh. I'm told I'm a pessimist, but I think of myself as just being realistic by preparing for the worst. I've had Murphy's Law drop in randomly at too many times in my life to not be wary and cautious at almost all times.

    I'm a realist, too

I'm a pessimist, there ain't doubting that. However, for the right people, I can play the optimist part pretty well.

Like everybody else I'm incredibly pessimistic on the inside. I can see things in a more favourable light but
I prefer to just mope and get depressed about things that haven't happened yet.

Optimism will usually serve you better and that's coming from a pessimist. The extremes of both are annoying though and can border on delusion in some cases. I used to have a friend who not only looked on the bright side of just about everything, but he'd also condescendingly urge others to just focus on the positive side almost every time someone had problems or criticism about anything. People who take their positive philosophy to that extreme are dismissive of genuine problems and reality in general. On the other hand someone who is constantly pessimistic (like me) is no fun to be around. People like that become burdens after a while because it's a toxic mindset to have.

I'm an optimist. I really don't think much about pessimism unless It's something huge that has impacted my life to the ninth degree.
I could also be considered a "realist" I guess, because I look at the world in a bit of a negative way.

I'm very much in the middle on this, but slightly leaning towards pessimistic. Due to a lot of things that have happened in my life, I can't really afford to be too optimistic about anything- I prepare for the worst, which allows me to move on easier if something bad happens. I guess it's a good mindset to have, but it's tiring being on edge all the time. I can't afford to be too optimistic, though, I don't want another relapse.
