Considering there are a lot of music makers that are fan of other peoples' music, there are a lot of different versions of a lot of different genres of music out there. This thread is mainly about video game music, so I'm talking about nonvocal mostly.

Which do you prefer, original, remix, or orchestral? Why?

I prefer orchestral. Those versions are really well done and I love the sound of a good string ensemble over electric or whatever was originally made (unless the original was orchestral XD)

Ah, this question is too hard!
If It's any genre, besides classical, and I had to choose one, I'd prefer the Remix. Not all remixes are well made, and I'm very picky when it comes to remixes.
And there's not a lot of people who make orchestra versions of my songs, although there are some, and they are mesmerizing to listen to, there's not enough.
As for the original, it gets boring after listening to it after a while, in my opinion.

Unless the original piece was orchestral, I'm almost certainly going to prefer the original mix. That's not to say that remixed or orchestral mixes of the same song are bad, I just like the original more. Though there are a few songs I prefer remixed, an example being the Angel With a Shotgun Nightcore remix.

Original, mostly. But remixes sometimes, if it's a good remix.

This goes on a case-by-case basis. I always like to begin with the original track as a starting point, then go from there to see if I can find any remixes of such that appeal to me. This largely depends on the artist, and in a few cases, the original is superior to any other remix that's put out there. Those instances are rare, though, and I am always astounded by the musical talent of some people.

However, I am irritated by orchestral remixes and even some orchestral originals. I listen to pieces of music trying to pick up on the beats or the tune, and that is incredibly difficult to do with orchestral pieces - they are far too soft. They aren't bad pieces by any means, though - they are just not what I like.

I usually like the original until I hear a remaster/remix, but I'll keep listening to them all (I made a post in a thread here that has three official varieties for one VG song). The thing is in most cases, once I hear 8/16/32 bit beeps and buzzes replaced by cello or electric guitar or whatnot, the old version loses its luster.

I spend a lot of time on OC Remix, and even with all my exposure to remixes (of my 539-song playlist, probably half are VG remixes, and 3/4 of those come from OC Remix), I can't say that any one genre is consistently better than any other, or that standard remasters are better or worse than a remix of any genre. I've heard great videogame songs be remixed in metal and absolutely suck (Final Fantasy X Jecht's theme), and fantastic originals be ruined for dubstep (Final Fantasy VII Sephiroth). I have also heard meh originals be helped by metal (Sonic&Knuckles Robot Bosses) and helped by techno (Kirby 64 Boss 02 fight). I see no discernible pattern of genre.

I do have a soft spot for orchestral remixes though. Case+Point: Time's End for Majora's mask. The album and especially the title track.

Truly? I feel the opposite. I feel like 8/16/32-bit tracks have their own unique charm that other tracks cannot even hope to replicate. There are good and bad tracks, of course, but so does every other genre. Then again, that is just me, and I like beauty in simplicity.

There a re a lot of great remixes, and a lot of great orchestrals as well, but overall, I always end up liking the original the best. While some remixes and orchestrals are done well, they will always lack innovation. You're basically just "remaking" the same song into a version of your own.

Yeah, the #-bit sounds are an instrument in and of themselves, and quite versatile at that. Irreplaceable too. But in a way similar to how people say that music always sounds better live and in person, I think the #-bit sounds are to the opposite of that. Like the timbre of their sound lacks the depth of an instrumental recording, the same way an instrumental recording lacks the depth of a live performance.

But I'm a guy who (generally) doesn't like synthesizers and electronica to be the forefront instrument in music, I prefer it to be background (where it mixes well with pretty much any genre at all). That may explain some of my anti- #-bit bias.

Honestly I'm not a big fan of remixes. I usually prefer the original versions of songs. I do like some remixes though, don't get me wrong. I guess I'm just a bit fussy with music.

I don't care much for remixes myself, but mostly it really depends. If it's an instrumental, then there are some pieces I like as orchestral (anime OSTs) otherwise, just let me stick with the original.

I love original mixes a lot more than remixes. Sure, remixes are nice to listen to, but I think listening to them after a parade of listening to the original counts as a nice change and lose some quality after a while. I feel like original mixes are made that way the way they are because the artist feels like that's the best it can be. I feel like remixes can lose some of that meaning.
