"Pay to win" is a term given to games that seem to reward players who pay extra money in order to gain extra content or gain easy access to content that would otherwise take a long time to obtain. For example, I play Hearthstone, and to get all of the best cards to make the best decks can take a while unless you pay some extra money to buy packs. What are your thoughts on these kinds of games? Do you hate them or are you alright with them? More me, it depends on the game. 9 times out of 10 I really hate pay to win games. It just seems so pointless to play them when all of these people who pay money are going to be better than you every time. However, I'd like to do back to Hearthstone. Collectible card games are very expensive when it comes to making competitive decks. Hearthstone is actually one of the cheapest card games when you take that into consideration. Because of that, I'm OK with the way Hearthstone handles things taking in context with its genre.
I really do not like them, I fee like it makes it impossible for underage people to beat a game or enjoy a game as much as adults. It also is really silly to spend 40+ dollars to purchase a game and then to make it worth it you have to purchase 20+ dollars of "DLC", really just content they withhold to make some extra money, to play a game. Many apps rely on this, console games rely on this, PC games, what next! I feel like if players want the game they shouldn't have to pay extra for a game we already invest in. Things such as Pokebank, a subscription service to move Pokémon from one game that you had to buy and then buy another game to move others over, Miiplaza, the point of it was so you had a game and street pass had importance, now it is pay to enjoy the fun games. I guess it bothers me less when it is a small developer but when the brand is big it bothers me to make a game micropurchase since people already pay so much for the console and games it feels like a profit should be made without my 5 bucks for a month of game perks.
I'm not going to lie, I do get DLC packs and extras to get with money. I enjoy this added content, but I just wish paying wasn't necessary. It bothers me a little bit that in order to be the best, you have to pay to make it easier, and it does make people who try so hard without added extras to get an 'S' rank feel like their effort was for nothing when people throw in other bonuses, like in Pokémon Shuffle. I'm not saying it's a bad game, I just wish that games in general didn't require money for extra content.
I'm okay with pay to win games. Granted I haven't really experienced any unfairness when it comes to games where you can pay real money. It is annoying when you see someone who obviously payed money and is better because of it, but I just enjoy the game the best I can within the circumstances.
I don't really like pay to win games but I do see why game companies do that cause people with a lot of money to spare will pay for it anyhow
As someone who doesn't like to spend money online, pay to win games really aren't my thing. I think it's unfair that I have to collect my stuff all by myself but others can just go buy it... Then again, I get why this is such a successful concept (exactly for that reason). As long as it's a good game, I'll just enjoy it without worrying about any DLC.
I was about to say "wait, aren't all games pay-to-win games?", and then I realised you were talking about video games, and not collectible card games. The practise of DLC is intended to add to the experience you already have, not to complete the unfinished experience you currently have. I think I may have said something like this in another topic, though that was probably in regards to DLC specifically - regardless, my opinion on the matter is the same here, because it still boils down to how the micro-transactions are used and intended for the game experience. Sadly I can't find the topic where I said this. I may not have said it here on this particular forum, though that is my opinion on the matter.
I've been buying stuff off of Pokémon GO. Does that count as paying to win? I don't really have much of a problem because it's just micro transactions and it's no different then buying a soda.
I can understand expansion packs and that sort of thing, but I just hate it when games have special money that is really hard/impossible to get without buying it, and it's very useful (they're called gems in quite a few games, I think).
I don't have a problem with DLCs or even in game currency for the most part. I do however when they tie key elements to a game into DLCs or restrict your progression a good example I like to use is Dragon Ball Xenoverse and Destiny. In order to level up past a certain level you have to buy the DLC otherwise you are at a complete disadvantage just because you don't have $20-$40 to spend on a game you already paid $60 for. I can't think of other games right now but I know there are plenty of them.
The only pay to win game I played was this free shooter for the PS4, but it turns out I was pretty gud so I didn't really need to buy the upgraded guns everyone else was using. Kinda miss it.
Hate 'em. Hate with aaaaallll the passion of a thousand, burning suns. Because then you get artificial difficulty. Which makes what was previously the most easy tasks such a choreee to do. I'm looking at you, Pokémon Go. Stop messing with me when I'm trying to catch extra 10 cp Spearows. I do not want to waste 5+ Pokéballs on collecting such fodder, ugh.
Pay to Win is something that i never like. Putting features behind a pay-wall or paying to skip major parts of the game with that extra money is t say cheap and takes away from the gaming experience. Also DLC is not a play to win concept, just an add on.
